KEY STAT: Fenerbahce have scored in each of their last nine games

EXPERT VERDICT: A 4-1 victory against Fenerbahce saw United at their best but the Turks are a different proposition at home and have had back-to-back wins since that calamity at Old Trafford. Misfiring United have lost their one away Europa League tie so far while Fener have won their one previous home tie.

RECOMMENDATION: Fenerbahce

KEY STAT: Southampton had more corners, shots and possession in Milan

EXPERT VERDICT: Southampton dominated the reverse fixture but were both wasteful and hugely unlucky to lose 1-0 given Antonio Candreva’s stunning strike was Inter’s only shot on target. Both sides really need the points in a tightly contested group, but Saints surely will not be as profligate in front of their own fans.

RECOMMENDATION: Southampton

KEY STAT: Both teams have scored in eight of Crystal Palace’s last nine league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Burnley should be buzzing after their draw at Manchester United and they have won three of their last five at Turf Moor. Crystal Palace are not as bad as their run of three defeats in four games suggests and they missed a penalty in the one match in which they drew a blank.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: West Ham haven’t beaten Stoke in any of their last six league meetings

EXPERT VERDICT: West Ham beat Chelsea in the EFL Cup, but they will need to step up after a poor performance in defeat to Everton on Sunday. However, the Hammers have been too inconsistent this season and make little appeal at the odds with the draw the best bet against Stoke.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Manchester City are unbeaten at home in the Premier League this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Pep Guardiola’s men ended a run of six games without a win and reignited their title charge with victory at West Brom last weekend and they should prove too strong for Middlesbrough. Boro beat Bournemouth last weekend but only Burnley and Sunderland have scored fewer goals on the road this term.

RECOMMENDATION: Man City to win 2-0

KEY STAT: Sunderland have scored only twice in five away games this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Bournemouth’s defeat at Middlesbrough was their first loss in five Premier League games and they have won three of their last four home matches. Sunderland are without a win in ten league games and have scored just once in their last three outings so they should once again be outclassed.

RECOMMENDATION: Bournemouth

NHL roundup: Habs win 8th straight
By The Sports Xchange

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens made history with a 3-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night at the Bell Centre.
Nathan Beaulieu, Torrey Mitchell and Alexander Radulov scored to extend the Canadiens' winning streak to eight games, giving them the most points (19) through 10 games in franchise history.
Carey Price made 42 saves for the Canadiens, earning his 37th career shutout. Ryan Miller stopped 19 shots for the struggling Canucks, who dropped their sixth straight.

Flyers 4, Red Wings 3 (OT)
PHILADELPHIA -- Sixty-four seconds away from ending a 20-year curse in Philadelphia, Detroit gave up a late equalizer then fell in overtime at the Wells Fargo Center.
Jake Voracek ended an exhausting shift by hustling down the ice and depositing center Claude Giroux's pass behind Red Wings goaltender Petr Mrazek to give the Flyers the win 1:41 into overtime.
The Flyers sent the game into overtime when defenseman Mark Streit scored with 1:04 remaining in regulation. Chris VandeVelde and Roman Lyubimov also scored for the Flyers.
Henrik Zetterberg, Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou scored for the Red Wings.

Penguins 5, Ducks 1
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Kris Letang had a goal and an assist in his first game in two weeks as Pittsburgh routed Anaheim at the Honda Center.
Evgeni Malkin scored his sixth goal of the season, Sidney Crosby had an assist for his sixth point in four games and goalie Matt Murray stopped 32 shots in his season debut for the Penguins, who earned their fourth consecutive victory and their fifth in six games. Matt Cullen and Bryan Rust also scored for the Penguins.
John Gibson allowed a season-high five goals while making 29 saves, and Cam Fowler scored the only goal for the Ducks.

Preview: Jets (4-6) at Capitals (6-2)

Date: November 03, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Capitals open a three-game homestand Thursday night the same way they ended their four-game Western Canada road swing - by facing the Winnipeg Jets.

Forward Jay Beagle salvaged the road finale Tuesday night, scoring the winning goal with 30 seconds left in the third period to give the Capitals a 3-2 win at MTS Centre.

Washington (6-2-1) had allowed only three third-period goals all season before the Jets (4-6) tallied twice in the third to tie it, setting up Beagle's heroics.

"They came at us with a real intense effort. We're going to have to match their intensity," Capitals head coach Barry Trotz said of Thursday's rematch.

"We'll have to manage the game a little better. If we play on our toes a little bit better and play with the same urgency that they had, then we should be fine."

After losing the first game of the road trip, Trotz shuffled his lines and the Capitals have won three straight. Forward Marcus Johansson, playing on the second line with center Evgeny Kuznetsov and forward Tom Wilson, scored Washington's second goal in Tuesday's win and has five tallies in the past three games.

"He's playing with a lot of confidence," Trotz said. "and that line seems to have a little bit of chemistry. They've scored probably - it seems like - 90 percent of our goals in our last two games."

Capitals goalie Braden Holtby faced 45 shots, something Beagle said Washington needs to fix Thursday night.

"Holts had to stand on his head to give us that 2-0 lead." Beagle said. "It's something that we're going to obviously address and look at tape. I think they've got a lot of speed. They like to come at you in waves and they definitely feed off turnovers, so we've got to get it behind them and make sure we're playing in their end."

The Jets look to bounce back after tying Tuesday's game with 2:25 remaining, only to lose a potential point or more in the final minute.

"(What) you take from it and all is not fair in this league and just try to replicate that game on Thursday night," Blake Wheeler said. "We've played pretty well here recently and we're pretty happy with how our game's going. It's a pretty good hockey club over there - they're expected to have a lot of success this year - and we belonged out there."

Despite the two-goal third period, the Jets have scored just four goals in their last three games.

"It's been really frustrating. We've had some looks," Wheeler said. "We've had some offensive zone time. It just hasn't resulted in goals."

Winnipeg hopes the late rally, and not the result, carries over into Thursday night.

"We know we have a solid team in here and we played real good against a real good team," Adam Lowry said. "Coming back from two goals against a team like that just shows we can compete with anyone, I think. ... We'll look back and just try to get back on the right track in Washington."

Preview: Canucks (4-5) at Senators (6-3)

OTTAWA -- When the Vancouver Canucks visit the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night, it will be a meeting of a team that is struggling mightily with its offense against one that is doing a good job keeping pucks out of its net.

The Canucks are coming off a 3-0 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday that kicked off a six-game road trip, which matches their longest of the season. They have lost five in a row, including a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Senators on Oct. 25 in Vancouver.

The Senators are off to a 6-3-0 start and the Canucks have turned a good start into a 4-5-1 record.

During their 240-minute losing streak, the Canucks have scored just two goals.

"When you're struggling to score goals, you start chasing the game, you start forechecking too hard, and you lose guys in the offensive zone," Canucks winger Daniel Sedin said after the loss to Montreal. "Tonight we had our third guy high, our defensemen could pinch, kept the play alive. That's why we had a lot of zone time, too, and more offensive shots.

"But can we do it again? That's the challenge for us. If we can do it once, I think we can do it every game."

The Senators are coming off a 2-1 overtime victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on tuesday at Canadian Tire Centre that was their second victory in a row. They have won three of their last four, including two shutouts by goalie Craig Anderson, whose wife was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Amazingly, Anderson's focus has been stellar throughout the hardship. He has won his last three starts while stopping 91 of 92 shots.

"He's an inspiration to all of us, I will tell you that," Senators defenseman Dion Phaneuf said. "He's been incredible, not only the way that he's stopping the puck, but just his strength and courage. It's something that has definitely touched our room."

While Anderson could leave the team to be with his wife at any moment, and with backup Andrew Hammond nursing a groin injury, the Senators obtained goalie Mike Condon from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick.

"The situation with (Anderson) is very fluid," Senators GM Pierre Dorion said. "We can't afford, at the present time, not to field the best team we can."

As a longtime Buffalo Sabres goalie, Ryan Miller has faced the Senators often. He is 18-21-4 against Ottawa with a .919 save percentage and a 2.61 goals-against average.

If Miller doesn't go back-to-back, Canucks backup Jack Marksstrom is 0-1 against the Senators, allowing four goals the only time he faced them.

"You have to stay with your process," Canucks coach Willie Desjardins said. "You don't have any choice. I thought we had a better effort creating shots.

"I believe that if we play like that every night, we'll win our share of games. That's what we have to believe and that's how we have to keep playing."

10 Players to Watch: Shriners Hospitals for Children Open
By Tom LaMarre, The Sports Xchange

1. Ryan Moore, United States -- It's a home game for Moore, who settled in Las Vegas after graduating from UNLV in 2005. He was a popular winner at TPC Summerlin in 2012, opening with a 61 and staying in or near the lead all the way before claiming the second of his five PGA Tour victories by one stroke over Brendon de Jonge of Zimbabwe. That was one of his three top-10 finishes in 10 starts at the Shriners, as he also tied for seventh in 2009 and tied for ninth in his title defense, shooting 63 in the second round both times. Moore tied for 23rd last week in the WGC-HSBC Champions a week after tying for 17th one week earlier in the CIMB Classic, which he won in 2013 and 2014. He is coming off a season in which he finished in the top 10 on nine occasions, winning the John Deere Classic and losing a playoff to Rory McIlroy in the Tour Championship.

2. Francesco Molinari, Italy -- After recording a tie for sixth in the WGC-HSBC Champions last week, Molinari is making his debut in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He tied for seventh in the Players Championship in May, but played his best golf this year on the European Tour. He closed with a 66 to finish second, four strokes behind Thongchai Jaidee in the Open de France, and in September he became the first player from Italy to capture the Italian Open twice, closing with a 6-under-par 65 to hold off Masters champion Danny Willett of England by one stroke. Molinari collected 22 birdies and an eagle over four rounds in Milan to win for the fourth time on the Euro Tour, but the first since the 2012 Open de Espana. His first victory came in the 2006 Italian Open, and the biggest title of his career was in the 2010 WGC-HSBC Champions.

3. Scott Piercy, United States -- Another resident of Las Vegas who is playing in his hometown event, Piercy is making his 11th appearance in the tournament. He has three top-10 finishes in the event, including a tie for sixth in 2012, when a third-round 73 proved to be costly before he closed with a 64. Piercy also tied for seventh two years ago with four scores in the 60s and tied for 10th in 2011. In 2009, Piercy was tied for the lead after starting 64-67-65, but he closed with a 73 and skidded to a tie for 14th. He got off to a strong start in the new season with a tie for third in the Safeway Open and a tie for 10th in the CIMB Classic, before tying for 63rd in the WGC-HSBC Champions last week. Piercy does have a victory in Nevada, winning the 2011 Reno-Tahoe Open by one stroke over Pat Perez, shooting 61 in third round.

4. Brooks Koepka, United States -- Koepka is playing for the second time since posting a 3-1-1 record, including a 5-and-4 rout of Masters champion Danny Willett in singles, to help the United States reclaim the Ryder Cup with a victory over Europe at Hazeltine. He started the new season with a tie for 40th last week in the WGC-HSBC Champions in China after taking several weeks off, but should be ready to jumpstart his season in Las Vegas, where he is playing for the fourth time. Koepka missed the cut in 2014 and last year, but in 2015 he played the weekend at TPC Summerlin in 64-68 to tie for fourth, five strokes behind winner Ben Martin. His only PGA Tour victory came in the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open, but last season he tied for second in the FedEx St. Jude Classic and lost a playoff to Sergio Garcia in the AT&T Byron Nelson.

5. Kevin Na, United States -- Yet another local resident playing this week at TPC Summerlin, Na claimed his only PGA Tour victory in Las Vegas in 2011, leading for most of the last three rounds with scores of 63-66-65 to beat Nick Watney by two strokes. He is playing in the tournament for the 10th time and came close to winning again last year, posting four rounds of 68 or better before finishing in a tie for second, one shot behind winner Smylie Kaufman. Na tied for the lead with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, but made a bogey at No. 17 before lipping out a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have forced a playoff. After finishing second twice and third also on two occasions last season, he opened the new season by tying for seventh in the Safeway Open, tying for 29th in the CIMB Classic and tying for 54th in the WGC-HSBC Champions.

6. Chris Kirk, United States -- After making a run for his fifth PGA Tour victory last week before closing with a 70 to tie for second, four shots behind winner Cody Gribble in the Sanderson Farms Championship, Kirk will try to bounce back in his fourth start in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He hasn't had much success in the tournament, missing the cut in 2007 and tying for 36th in both 2012 and 2014. However, he is off to a strong start to the 2016-17 season, also tying for eighth in the Safeway Open. Kirk is coming off something of a disappointing year, in which he finished in the top 10 only three times, after winning the in each of the previous three years at the 2013 McGladrey Classic, the 2014 Deutsche Bank Championship in the FedExCup playoffs and the 2015 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. His best result last year was a tie for fifth in the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship.

7. Ryo Ishikawa, Japan -- Great things were predicted for Ishikawa when he claimed his first victory in a professional event as a 15-year-old amateur and he has won 15 times in Japan, but never on the PGA Tour. However at 25, he still has plenty of time to achieve success and challenge Hideki Matsuyuma, a three-time winner on the U.S. circuit, as the best Japanese player of this generation. Ishikawa is coming off a tie for 10th in the CIMB Classic that was his fifth consecutive finish in the top 10, including a victory back home in the Rizap KBC Augusta in August. His best result on the PGA Tour was a tie for second in Las Vegas in 2014, although he finished six strokes behind runaway winner Webb Simpson. This will be Ishikawa's third start at TPC Summerlin and he also tied for 26th in 2014 and tied for 50th last year despite opening with a 65.

8. Brendan Steele, United States -- After starting the season with his second PGA Tour victory in the Safeway Open, Steele was in position for another high finish before he closed with a 73 and slipped to a tie for 26th in the CIMB Classic two weeks ago in Malaysia. At Silverado in the opener, Steele birdied the last three holes to beat Patton Kizzire by one stroke, shooting 67-65 on the weekend to tie the tournament record of 18-under-par for 72 holes and claim his first victory since the 2011 Valero Texas Open. He seems to have his game headed in the right direction again after posting only two top-10 finishes last season. This is Steele's sixth start in Las Vegas and his best result was a tie for 13th in 2012 after he tied for 16th the year before in his tournament debut. Last year, he shot 68-74 -- 142 to miss the cut by two shots.

9. Jon Rahm, Spain -- The rookie from Spain, who was a two-time Ben Hogan Award-winner at Arizona State and the top-ranked amateur in the world, as expected has made a big early splash on the PGA Tour since turning pro earlier this year. He has made the cut in seven of his eight starts, including a tie for second in the RBC Canadian Open and a tie for third in the Quicken Loans National. Of course, Rahm showed as an amateur that he could play with the big boys when he tied for fifth in the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open with his friends and teammates from Arizona State cheering him on. Then he tied for 10th in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba late last year before finishing as low amateur in the U.S. Open with a tie for 23rd in June at Oakmont. Rahm, who started this season with a tie for 15th in the Safeway Open, is making his Las Vegas debut.

10. Smylie Kaufman, United States -- In claiming his first PGA Tour victory last year in Las Vegas, Kaufman torched TPC Summerlin for a bogey-free 10-under-par 61 in the final round. Then he had to sweat it out for two hours in the clubhouse before learning he was one stroke better than Sergio Garcia, Patton Kizzire, Jason Bohn, Cameron Tringale, Brett Stegmaier and Alex Cjeka of Germany. Kaufman, who won the 2015 United Leashing Championship on the Web.com Tour, punctuated that final round in Vegas with a 15-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole and a 20-footer for birdie on the last. He had four top-10 finishes and 10 in the top 25 as a rookie last year to make it through three rounds of the FedExCup playoffs, but has had a slow start to the new season, missing the cut in the Safeway Open and tying for 45th in the CIMB Classic.

PGA Tour Picks: Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Odds and Expert Predictions
by Alan Matthews

I knew how well Hideki Matsuyama was playing entering last week's World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions big-money event in China. He had won two weeks prior at the Japan Open, was second the next week at the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur and again had a bit of a home-field advantage competing in Asia for the HSBC Champions. Alas, all that travel I thought would cool him off.

But Matsuyama absolutely deserved the title at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai. It was a star-studded leader board entering the final round, but Matsuyama blew away the field with a 66 to finish at 23 under and win by seven. He made 29 birdies on the week and did not make a bogey in his final 45 holes. His margin of victory was the largest in tournament history.

One week after becoming the first Japanese player since Jumbo Ozaki in 1998 to reach the Top 10 in the world, the victory moved Matsuyama up to No. 6. Even though he's only 24, Matsuyama already might have to be in the conversation with Hall of Famers Isao Aoki and Ozaki to be considered the greatest Japanese male golfer ever, at least on the PGA Tour. Matsuyama's third PGA Tour-sanctioned victory tied him with Shigeki Maruyama for most by a Japanese player. Matsuyama is the first Asian player to win a WGC event. Wouldn't surprise me if a first major comes in 2017.

I want to quickly touch on American Matt Kuchar from last week. He's a multimillionaire, but a free car is a free car no matter how rich you are. Kuchar had an ace on No. 17 during the tournament, which usually means a new car at the event. But wet conditions forced Kuchar to tee off from a forward tee. Thus because the yardage was below 200 yards, he wasn't eligible, per insurance rules, to win a Cadillac. That's B.S.

I did have Matsuyama at -130 over Justin Thomas (even). I hit on Rory McIlroy at -200 for a Top 10. Thought either McIlroy or Dustin Johnson (T35) would win but also threw some long-shot money on German Martin Kaymer, a former winner of the tournament. But he was T40.

So now we start a three-week PGA Tour schedule of watered-down fields back in North America before a few silly-season events to close the calendar year. It's the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas this week. This event has had many names but has kept this exact one since 2014. Just six of the world's Top 36 players are entered. Team USA Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III makes his first start since being elected to the World Golf Fall of Fame.

The defending champion is Smylie Kaufman. He shot a final-round 10-under 61 last year, one shot off the course record and starting Sunday seven shots back of the lead, to finish at 16 under for his first Tour win. Kaufman played the final 11 holes in 9 under with an eagle and seven birdies. He was the 10th first-time winner over the past 14 years in Vegas. Kevin Na, third-round leader Brett Stegmaier, Patton Kizzire, Cameron Tringale, Jason Bohn and Alex Cejka tied for second, a stroke back. Kaufman is a +7500 long shot to repeat. Only Jim Furyk has done that in the tournament.

Golf Odds: Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Favorites

Las Vegas resident Ryan Moore is the +1600 favorite. He won this tournament in 2012 at 24 under by a shot over Brendon de Jonge. Moore was then T9 the next year but has struggled in the event the past two years. He did play last week in China and was T23.

Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm are +2200. Koepka has been very hit or miss in three trips here with two missed cuts and a T4 (2014). He was T40 last week overseas. Rahm makes his tournament debut. The favorites are rounded out by Chris Kirk, Francesco Molinari, Kevin Na and Scott Piercy, all at +2800. Na won here in 2011.

Golf Odds: Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Picks

For a Top-10 finish, go with Moore (+175), Na (+275) and Jimmy Walker (+350). I like Graeme McDowell at +150 as the top player from Great Britain and Ireland, and Cejka at +800 as the top European. Head-to-head, go with Molinari (-130) over Billy Horschel (even), Moore (-125) over Koepka (-105), Kirk (-110) over Rahm (-120), and Piercy (-120) over Na (-110).

Since I liked Na for a Top 10, I must like Piercy even better since I'm taking him to beat Na head-to-head. And Piercy is my winner (he has three Tour victories in his career, last the 2015 Barbasol). He didn't play well last week in China but had back-to-back Top 10s the previous two events. He's also a Las Vegas resident with three Top 10s in this event, most recently a T7 in 2014. I actually wish one of the books would post Las Vegas guys vs. the field prop as I believe one of them wins it. Perhaps you can request it.

Preview: Oilers (7-2) at Rangers (7-3)

Date: November 03, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The best team in the Western Conference is coming to Madison Square Garden on Thursday night, and it's the ... Edmonton Oilers?

That's not a misprint; through the 10 games, the Oilers are 7-2-1 and it's not outlandish to think that their game against the 7-3-0 New York Rangers is a potential Stanley Cup Final preview. Sure, each team has 72 games remaining and the calendar just flipped to November, but this is the marquee matchup on the NHL schedule.

The Oilers are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs in Toronto on Tuesday night, one that saw budding superstars Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews go head-to-head for the first time. McDavid who entered the game as the NHL leader and points, was held off the scoresheet.

He was also the object of Leafs coach Mike Babcock's passive criticism of his usage; Oilers coach Todd McLellan gave McDavid 22:46 of ice time, the second-most minutes he's played this season and an unusually high amount for even an elite forward like McDavid.

"No, no. If you keep your shifts short and all that, I feel like I'm in pretty good shape," McDavid said to ESPN. "I feel like I can do that. It is what it is."

McDavid played a season-high 23:27 in a season-opening 7-4 win in Calgary and had two goals and an assist. He has been held pointless over the past two games, so Thursday against the Rangers could reveal he's in a slump or show he was due for a breakout game.

This is also a homecoming for goaltender Cam Talbot, who was a backup goaltender for the Rangers for two seasons before joining the Oilers last season. He is among the league leaders in goals-against average (2.14) and save percentage (.932) and should get the start Thursday.

"I feel pretty confident," Talbot said to the Edmonton Journal. "It's going to be a good test for us, two good teams, it's going to be a battle out there. I have to be ready to bring my 'A' game and give us a chance to win."

"There's not much to say about it," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said to the Edmonton Journal. "We watch him every night and he's played tremendous. It's not even alarming for us -- that's just how he plays night in and night out."

Talbot may have to bring something more than an 'A' game against the Rangers, who lead the league with an average of four goals per game. In their past two matchups against the Tampa Bay Lightning and St. Louis Blues -- two perennially quality teams -- they have scored 11 goals and allowed one.

The most encouraging part of that two-game stretch was Henrik Lundqvist making 35 saves in a shutout of the Blues. Lundqvist had a .901 save percentage in October but used one outstanding start to get to .917 and perhaps remind people he's still an elite goaltender.

He will need to be sharp again with McDavid and the Oilers -- who are seventh in scoring with 3.10 goals per game -- looking to show they are the real deal in a tough road matchup.

"Obviously you see (McDavid's) highlights every night," Dan Girardi said to the Daily News. "He's making big plays every game. He's a big-time player. Obviously we're going to have to pay special attention to him. But their whole team is playing well right now, which is helping."

Preview: Maple Leafs (3-4) at Sabres (4-3)

Date: November 03, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres will look to extend a rare three-game winning streak on Thursday when the rival Toronto Maple Leafs come to town.

The Sabres (4-3-2) haven't had many winning streaks in recent years. Buffalo had only two three-game win streaks all season.

The Sabres picked up their third win in a row on Tuesday by grinding out a 2-1 road victory over the Minnesota Wild, the same team that shut them out days earlier in dominant fashion.

The winning goal came from Johan Larsson with 6:26 remaining after the forward drove to the net. It resulted in Minnesota's first loss at home this season.

"We're a part of the shutout streak. We're a part of (Devan Dubnyk) stopping 39 shots in two periods against us in Buffalo," Sabres head coach Dan Bylsma said after the victory. "Knowing the run they're on, knowing the run he's on, we talked about it and felt like we needed to get some traffic in front of him. It was going to have to be a longer shot and then pick up the pieces afterward, and that's exactly what it was.

"It felt good to see that puck find the back of the net against a guy that's been playing so well."

Robin Lehner made 27 saves in the victory for Buffalo for his second consecutive win. Lehner is back between the pipes for the Sabres after missing three games due to illness.

"It's fun to play when we play the right way and we work together," Lehner said, according to the Sabres' team website.

Buffalo may be without defenseman Zach Bogosian when the Maple Leafs come to town. Bogosian left in the first period of the win over Minnesota after injuring his knee.

"It was unfortunate," Bylsma said. "He went down on the wall and his skate got caught in a rut. He had a tweak of the knee, so I don't have any idea of the prognosis right now."

The rebuilding Maple Leafs (3-4-3) are coming off a 3-2 overtime win over Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. Center Nazem Kadri had two goals, including the winner 12 seconds into overtime.

"There are a lot of people coming in here thinking it's easy to play the Leafs," Kadri said. "That's part of the identity we're trying to create here -- hard to play against. Coming into Toronto it's going to be a tough building to play against. We did a pretty good job and were able to find a way to get two points."

After a slow start to the season, Frederik Andersen made 44 saves in the win over the Oilers.

The Maple Leafs continue to get strong contributions from their top young prospects.

William Nylander was named the NHL's Rookie of the Month for October with 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in nine games.

Top overall pick Auston Matthews is right behind him with 10 points (six goals, four assists) in nine games.

Preview: Flyers (5-5) at Islanders (4-6)

Date: November 03, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- If the New York Islanders are going to bounce back from their worst loss in the last two seasons, they'll have to do so against a Philadelphia Flyers squad bursting with positive momentum after one of its most dramatic wins of the year.

The Islanders continue a five-game homestand Thursday night, when they host the Flyers in a clash of Metropolitan Division rivals at Barclays Center. New York is coming off a 6-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, while Philadelphia heads into Brooklyn following a dramatic 4-3 overtime win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

The Flyers tied the game on a goal by Mark Streit with 1:04 left in the third period before Jakob Voracek scored the winner just 1:41 into overtime. It was the fourth comeback win of the season for Philadelphia (5-5-1) and the second time it has scored the equalizer in the third period.

"I think that's a trait within the locker room," Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol said. "We've been able to do it a couple times and come out of a game with points, but that's not a position you want to be in."

It beats the position the Islanders were in Tuesday, when the Lightning scored six unanswered goals in the first 32 minutes as fans at Barclays Center chanted for the firing of New York head coach Jack Capuano.

"It's not the first time it's happened, right?" said Capuano who is the fifth-longest tenured head coach in the NHL.

The six goals were the most the Islanders (4-6-0) have given up in a home game since moving to Barclays Center last season, while the five-goal deficit matched their most lopsided defeat in that span.

"I think you always try to learn from it," Islanders center and captain John Tavares said. "But it's a long season and a lot of games still coming up, so we've just got to put it behind us and get better (at practice Wednesday) and obviously be ready to play Thursday."

Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak worked by himself during Wednesday's practice, an indication he will draw the start Thursday. Steve Mason will likely start for the Flyers after Michel Neuvirth earned the win in the opening game of the back-to-back set Wednesday.

Halak, who backed up Thomas Greiss the previous two games before relieving Greiss in the first period Tuesday, is 9-4-0 in 13 career appearances against the Flyers. He took the loss the last time he opposed Philadelphia on Jan. 9, when Halak allowed all four goals in the Islanders' 4-0 defeat at Wells Fargo Center.

Mason is 7-2-3 in 14 career appearances against the Islanders. He earned the win the last time he opposed New York on March 21, when Mason stopped all but one of the 24 shots he faced in the Flyers 4-1 win at Barclays Center.

Preview: Avalanche (4-4) at Blackhawks (6-3)

Date: November 03, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

CHICAGO -- During his tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks, Corey Crawford has played a pivotal role in helping deliver three Stanley Cup championships since 2010.

So as the Blackhawks ride a three-game winning streak into a Thursday home test against the Colorado Avalanche, it is no secret that Crawford has been at the center of Chicago's recent success.

Crawford, who made 33 saves in the Blackhawks' 5-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, boosts the level of play of those playing in front of him on a nightly basis.

"He gives us confidence," Blackhawks forward Artemi Panarin said after Tuesday night's victory. "We were calmer (against the Flames). We made those little bit risky plays knowing we have a great goalkeeper behind us."

Over his career, Crawford has grown more consistent in net, which, in turn, made him among the NHL's best. But over Chicago's three-game win streak, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville is seeing that consistency became a staple of Crawford's game much in the way it did throughout last season.

Crawford registered at least 32 saves in each of the three wins, leading to a save percentage of .926 this season. Crawford owns a 4-3-1 record.

Like the Blackhawks (6-3-1), Crawford is raising his game up a level of late.

"I'm feeling better and better every game," Crawford said Tuesday night. "I'm feeling quicker out there reading plays, that's a big part of it, too, being able to read a play and get out and be aggressive when it's time. Just everything is coming together each game and just went out there and battled."

While Crawford has the Blackhawks moving in the right directions, the Avalanche find themselves struggling. Colorado dropped a 5-1 decision to the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night in Denver.

The defeat was Colorado's third in its past four games, dropping the Avalanche back to .500 for the season, 4-4-0.

"It's not at all how we want to play," coach Jared Bednar said after the Tuesday loss. "It's pretty bad. ... We didn't find the intensity we needed for the game. It was disappointing because it was a chance for us to go a couple of games above .500, and now we're just spinning in the mud again."

As Crawford has experienced at times earlier this season, the Avalanche are struggling with inconsistent play. That will be put to the test Thursday night when they face a Blackhawks team that is looking to keep its positive momentum.

Colorado, meanwhile, will look to reverse its course and get things back on track.

"We're trying to make sure we get certain things out of our group every night," Bednar said. "When we get them, we give ourselves a good chance to win. When we don't get them, right now it's almost a guaranteed loss."

To that end the Avalanche held a team meeting after the loss to Nashville.

Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog said, "To a man, we have to be honest and look at ourselves in the mirror and reflect the way we come to work every day. I'm not going to go into details about the meeting. We're going to come to the rink ... with a good attitude. Tonight, it's got to be said, this was embarrassing."
