Jacksonville Jaguars at Philadelphia Eagles (-7.5, 37 )

Matchup stats and trends

Starter/injury Report

With Michael Vick set to make his Eagles debut, the Jaguars will be flying under the radar in this matchup.

Former Viking Troy Williamson is the league leading in receiving yardage this preseason and veteran Torry Holt is manning the other starting wideout spot.

The offensive line is still a work in progress with as many as three starting spots up for grabs heading into the regular season.

Since this is the Jags third game in 11 days, Jacksonville head coach Jack Del Rio won't extend his starters as much as most squads will this week. The first-team units are expected to exit the game after the first half.

Eagles head coach Andy Reid said that Vick will mix in with his starting offense during the first three quarters of the game.

Philadelphia is healing up after getting banged up in training camp. No.2 quarterback Kevin Kolb will return to action and finish up in the fourth quarter against the Jaguars. Also, running back Brian Westbrook is expected to make his first preseason appearance after some offseason surgeries. Still, two starting offensive linemen are unlikely to get on the field this week.

Line movement

The Eagles opened as a touchdown favorite with a total of 38. Philadelphia is now a 7.5-point favorite while the total is down to 37.5.

Trends

Del Rio is 17-9 (15-10-1 ATS) in his preseason coaching career while Reid is just 14-28 (19-23 ATS) in exhibition action with the Eagles.

Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 81 degrees with a 20 percent chance of rain in Philadelphia.

St. Louis Rams at Cincinnati Bengals (-2.5, 35)

Matchup stats and trends

Starter/injury report

Neither team is expected to have its top signal caller on the field on Thursday. Marc Bulger of the Rams and Carson Palmer of the Bengals should return to action next week.

New head coach Steve Spagnuolo is trying to get his banged up run defense on track after it allowed 5.6 yards per rush to the Falcons last week. Defensive linemen Leonard Little and Adam Carriker are unlikely to play against Cincinnati.

With Bulger out, Kyle Boller (12-of-25 passing in preseason) will run the first-team offense for St. Louis. The Rams will be without starting wide receiver Donnie Avery. Spagnuolo has said that his starters will play at least through the first half.

The Bengals (sixth in NFL in total offense during preseason) have moved the ball in their two exhibition outings, but are dead last in scoring offense.

While Boller has struggled in his backup role in St. Louis, J.T. O' Sullivan has been sharp for the Bengals. He has a 136.3 QB rating this August. Head coach Marvin Lewis has indicated that O' Sullivan will start on Thursday and that Jordan Palmer would garner more playing time this week as the No.2 quarterback.

Wake Forest rookie Sam Swank will handle the kicking duties this week for the injured Shayne Graham.

Line movement

The Bengals opened as a field goal choice in the matchup the total set at 35. Cincinnati is now a 2.5-point favorite in the game.

Trends

Lewis is 13-13 (14-11-1 ATS) in his preseason coaching career.

Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 82 degrees with a 20 percent chance of rain in Cincinnati.

Miami Dolphins at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2.5, 35)

Matchup stats and trends

Starter/injury report

Miami head coach Tony Sparano will go with starting quarterback Chad Pennington through the first offensive series of the third quarter against the Bucs. Chad Henne is expected to finish the game under center on Thursday. Rookie Pat White is unlikely to play this week after some struggles in his first two exhibition contests.

The Dolphins will also continue to evaluate their two candidates for the starting kicking spot. It appears that incumbent kicker Dan Carpenter is going to hold off former Chiefs kicker Connor Barth for the starting spot.

Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris has delayed his starting quarterback decision for another week after a strong effort by Luke McCown in last week's win at Jacksonville. Now, the job could be won by default. The Bucs are reportedly shopping McCown and Byron Leftwich to other teams to gauge their trade value.

Leftwich will start against the Dolphins and will play into the second quarter before McCown enters the game. Morris said that both quarterbacks will gain the same amount of playing time with the first-team offense against Miami. Carnell "Cadillac" Williams will make his preseason debut as the starting running back but top receiver Antonio Bryant is still out of action until the regular season.

Line movement

The Bucs opened as a 2.5-point favorite with the total set at 35. The opening numbers have held steady.

Trends

Since losing his preseason debut a year ago, Sparano has reeled off five straight victories in exhibition action.

Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 89 degrees with a 50 percent chance of rain in Tampa.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates (+180, 8.5)

When you’re 6-foot-4 and 255 pounds of pure baseball-crushing power, it’s hard to stop rolling once you pick up momentum.

Phillies slugger Ryan Howard is on a huge tear in recent games. Heading into Wednesday, the first baseman has a .290 average in the past week and has totaled four home runs and 13 RBIs – including a two home-run, five-RBI performance against the rival New York Mets Monday.

"That's why I call him the 'Big Piece,'" Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told reporters. "He was the game. ... I told him one of these days if he ever gets strong, he's going to be a pretty good hitter."

In the series opener with the Pirates, Howard registered his 65th extra-base hit of the season with a double in the team’s 6-4 loss to Pittsburgh. That loss was just Philadelphia’s third defeat the last 14 contests.

Howard and the Phillies will be out to erase that blip in Thursday’s series finale. As of Wednesday, Howard has a .364 BA versus the state rivals and has eight total bases and four RBI in four games with Pittsburgh this year.

Pick: Philadelphia

Kansas City Royals at Seattle Mariners (-145, 8.5)

Seattle Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre is the frontrunner for Most Painful Injury Description of the Year.

Beltre took a line drive in the pills back in the middle of August and has been on the DL ever since with what the team calls, “a severely bruised testicle”.

"When I got it, I thought it exploded," Beltre told MLB.com.

"It was a direct hit and was really painful. I felt like going down, but I saw the ball right next to me and I wanted to finish the play."

Anyone feeling sorry for Beltre should also note that the infielder plays without a cup and has done so for most of his career. Beltre says the protective device is too uncomfortable and he gets hit in the junk every 11 seasons, so he isn’t worried about it happening again.

Seattle is also without outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, who has been held out this week with a sore calf muscle – which seems like a hangnail when compared to Beltre’s right nut.

The hitting machine was supposed to be back in the lineup against Oakland Tuesday night, but didn’t feel like he could compete. His return is uncertain according to manager Don Wakamatsu, who told the media the Mariners don’t want to rush the nine-time All-Star back and would like to keep him on the field when he does return.

Seattle’s offense has missed those two bats. The Mariners are averaging under three runs per game in their last four contests – all of which have played under the run total. The M’s have a 4-9-1 over/under record in the past 15 games after starting August with eight over paydays in their first nine outings.

Pick: Under

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Chris Carpenter, St. Louis Cardinals

An overachieving starting staff is a big reason why the Cardinals have emerged as one of the best teams in baseball. But they wouldn't be running away with the National League Central without a bona fide ace.

They found it from a familiar face. The oft-injured Carpenter missed most of two seasons because of a career-threatening arm injury – and even missed part of this year on the disabled list – but he's returned to his Cy Young form of 2005.

Carpenter (14-3, 2.13 ERA) is 9-0 with one no-decision in his past 10 starts and has won his past six decisions. The 34-year-old righty has yielded just 16 earned runs over a 10-start span and just four over his past three outings.

Carpenter kept the San Diego Padres scoreless over seven innings in last outing, allowing just three hits in another St. Louis win.

Jorge De La Rosa, Colorado Rockies

De La Rosa has given the Rockies something they sorely need if they are to stay in contention; a starter who can keep the ball in the yard at Coors Field.

Ironically, De La Rosa (12-8, 4.76 ERA) has had his worst outings on the road, leading to his pedestrian earned-run average.

But along with ace Jason Marquis, he has given Colorado another dependable starter at home. The 27-year-old lefty has given up just 15 earned runs in his last seven home starts for the current NL wild-card leaders.

He is 6-1 in his past seven starts and has given up two or fewer earned runs in five of those outings.

Slumping

Kyle Davies, Kansas City Royals

In order to build toward respectability, the Royals need to find another solid starter to complement Zack Greinke. They haven’t found one in Davies.

The 25-year-old righty is 2-5 with one no-decision in his past eight starts. During that span, he has given up at least six earned runs three times.

Davies (4-6. 6.12 ERA) has also yielded 10 walks and five home runs in his past five trips to the hill. He was tagged for six earned runs in five-plus innings against the Minnesota Twins in his last start.

Trevor Cahill, Oakland A’s

Part of Oakland’s annual youth movement, the 21-year-old Cahill (6-12, 4.86) has taken plenty of lumps in his on-the-job training.

The right-hander is 1-4 with two no-decisions in his past seven starts, and has yielded five or more earned runs in three of those.

The good news for Oakland fans is that he appears to be making progress; in his past two starts, both no-decisions, he has give up just four earned runs over 13 innings.

Kansas City Royals vs. Seattle Mariners Seattle Mariners
-145 at 5DIMES > 13h.
1* Take the Seattle Mariners on the Moneyline, This pick falls into one of my top MLB systems and the Royals are just 3-14 in their last 17 games against an AL West division opponent. The Royals are just 0-4 in their last 4 games in game one of a series and they are just 2-6 in Kyle Davies (4-9, 6.12 ERA) last 8 starts against a team with a winning record. Doug Fister (1-0, 2.21 ERA) has allowed just 15 hits over his last 3 starts and just 5 earned runs. The Mariners are 7-2 in their last 9 home games against a right hand starter and the Royals are just 5-16 in their last 21 trips to Seattle. Take the Seattle Mariners as my MLB Bonus Play for Thursday night.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Total
8½ ov+100 at BOOKM > 10h.
The Phillies just went on a 4-2-1 run over the total, not surprising for the top offensive team in the National League. That included the opener of this series, a 6-4 loss to the Pirates. They will like playing against Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton (3-6, 5.21 ERA), who has a 9.49 ERA his last three starts, walking 8 in 12 innings! He has more walks than Ks during that stretch. Pittsburgh is an easy home run park, so look for more runs than oddsmakers expect. Play the Phillies/Pirates Over the total.

(919) CLEVELAND INDIANS
(920) BALTIMORE ORIOLES
Take "(919) CLEVELAND INDIANS"

Aaron Laffey is not nearly as reliable on the road as he's been at home for the Indians. But the lefty is clearly in better form than Baltimore rookie David Hernandez, who's been getting knocked around lately. With the Indians currently listed as the dog in this hookup, they're the side to play.

Another comp play winner on Wednesday as the LA Angels come through. We are now 25-10-1 our last 36 comp play selections.

Preseason NFL action this Thursday night, as we will take any points available with the St. Louis Rams as they head to Cincinnati for a date with the Bengals.

Both Marc Bulger, and Carson Palmer are expected to be on the sidelines watching the action once again, so we must take a closer look at the back-ups in this game, and we are liking the Rams rotation a little more with the experienced Kyle Boller leading the way.

Rookie Keith Null, and veteran Brock Berlin are vying for the # 3 spot, so both should be itching to get on the field to show the coaches what they can/can't do.

Cincy will go with JT O'Sullivan, Jordan Palmer will also see action in this home contest. The Bengals did pull off the 7-6 upset last week at New England, but obviously did not show much offense along the way.

The Rams have at least been scoring points this preseason, and we like them to put up enough to spring the road upset on Thursday.

Cincinnati went 0-2 both straight up, and against the spread last preseason at home, and they are just 1-3 both straight up, and against the spread in Week 3 of the preseason the last 4 Augusts.

With the Rams trying to impress for new head coach Steve Spagnuolo, we will grab the underdog plus the points in this one.

Play on St. Louis.

MLB Selection

Play on: (926) Los Angeles (– 1 ½ Runs) over Oakland @ 10:35 PM EST

The Angels go from battling the bats of the Tigers to the arms of the Athletics. With that in mind would favor right-hander Ervin Santana in his quest to secure a division flag for the left coast elite. Los Angeles is 24-8 versus a losing baseball team and 7-1 with Santana versus Oakland. Finally, the A’s are 14-52 on the road versus a winning club.

Be on board for Brad Diamond’s NFL and Major League Key releases this Thursday. Up first will be the Day Time Smash Mouth Winner. Next on the card an NFL ‘Total’ Parlay with an outstanding background to bring home the cash. Also, you will find our Handicapping Champion's Night Time MLB Total Release.

NFL Pick

St Louis Rams vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Play: Point Spread: Cincinnati Bengals -2.5

Cincinnati is looking for a bounce back year this year with a healthy Carson Palmer and for now a pleased Chad Ochocinco. St. Louis has some decent offensive parts but defense is where they are lacking, but have well in the preseason as they are 1-1. In this one look for Cincinnati, who is coming off a win, to win another game and get going for the regular season. Play Cincinnati

G-Man got it done with another Bonus Play last night, as Texas-NY Yankees did go OVER the total. That is 2 in a row for free, and for Thursday I have another Bonus Play total winner.

Take Chicago-Boston to go UNDER the total in the last of the battle of the sox this Thursday night at Fenway.

Last night, a solid 3-2 pitchers duel broke out to end a bit of a Boston OVER trend that had been building.

With Wednesday's UNDER, these teams have now played LOW 7-2-1 their last 10 series meetings dating back to last year.

Chicago is now on a 12-4 UNDER run their last 16 road games.

John Danks is a solid 6-3 on the road this season with a respectable ERA of 3.72, while Boston's Junichi Tazawa has been a find for the BoSox, going 2-1 with a 2.81 ERA in his first 3 big league starts.

Look for the pitchers to control the hitters once again tonight, and for Chicago and Boston to hold UNDER the posted total.

4? UNDER
