The press can't and won't cover a minority in bad light as that would not be nice, in fact, they would actually call anyone who would continue covering the Vang story, racists. The press caters to that little blue dot in the state. Minnesota nice is the picture the press paints, when stroking their liberal brush. They have a lot of good repubs on the defensive in this state still. It's broader than just MN but the Vang story is the epitome liberal press coverage.
