'The hills are alive with the sound of...': Is Angela Merkel showing Barack Obama her best Julie Andrews impression from the Sound of Music? "Is Angela Merkel showing Barack Obama her best Julie Andrews impression from the Sound of Music?"

No, this is Merkel's reaction after Obama said, "I am getting ready to meet with the joint chiefs to formulate a strategy to get ready to train Iraqi troops to get ready to fight ISIS. And after that I'm getting ready to formulate a strategy to best tell Putin to get out of Ukraine."

Was Obama SMOKING at the G-7 summit? President pictured holding 'packet of cigarettes' during cozy balcony chat with Italian Prime Minister

  • Commander-in-Chief held item resembling cigarette packet at meeting
  • Was pictured with Matteo Renzi by Italian prime minister's spokesman
  • Obama started smoking as a teenager, but claims to have given up
  • He has admitted in the past he still has moments of weakness
  • Rumor circulated that he had smoked with singer Billy Joel in 2013

President Obama has apparently been caught red-handed after a surreptitious cigarette at this weekend's G7 summit.
A photograph of the Commander-in-Chief shows him standing on a balcony clutching an item which looks like a packet of cigarettes.
Obama has his hands round the object, making it impossible to tell for sure, but one hand is poised over an opening in the box as if to slide something out of it.

Busted? President Obama is seen above holding what might be a cigarette packet as he speaks with Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi at last weekend's G-7 summit in Schloss Elmau, Germany

Suspicious: The President's hands are wrapped around the object in the way one would take a cigarette from a packet

Teenage habit: Obama rarely smokes in public now. He is pictured above in Kenya with a cigarette in an undated photograph

It can't be cigarettes, though. He says he quit smoking and we all know he'd never lie to the American people.

We DO have a strategy to fight ISIS, the president didn’t really mean to say we don't, claims State Department

  • Speaking from Kruen, Germany, Obama said Monday the Pentagon was re-evaluating its program to train Iraqi security forces
  • 'We don't yet have a complete strategy,' Obama said, 'because it requires commitments on the part of the Iraqis as well about how recruitment takes place, how that training takes place'
  • State Department spokesman today: 'The president was referring to a specific plan to improve training and equipping of the Iraqi security forces'
  • Obama administration seeking to discredit Republicans claiming POTUS lacks a 'robust' strategy to eliminate ISIS, as they've been saying all along
  • House Speaker John Bohner mocked the president on Twitter: 'Shorter President Obama on defeating #ISIL: ¯\_(ツ)_/ '

Republicans zeroed in on Obama's acknowledgement that his military advisers hadn't yet figured out a way to do that, however, and used it to bludgeon his record on Iraq.

At the White House, later on Tuesday afternoon, West Wing spokesman Josh Earnest said the president was being 'very direct' about a topic that's been under discussion for weeks now. The administration is constantly updating its strategy in Iraq to reflect changes in the situation on the ground, he said, repeating a statement he's made numerous times in the past
