I've copied this from the Chronwatch blog - this guy says it better than I could, and much better than any columnists I've read:

Can anybody tell me who is in charge of the Republican Party?

I would love to complain about the current direction of the Republican Party, but I can’t find anybody in charge to speak to. It’s all sort of surreal. It is very clear who speaks for the Democrats. Every single day I hear what Nancy or Harry has to say. They keep reminding me there is a Republican party out there that they oppose.
There’s this guy Bill Frist and another called Dennis Hastert that are supposed to represent the Republicans, but they seldom ever say anything to make me think they are really in charge of anything. Senators McCain and Specter may say absolutely anything on any given day so they don’t seem like they are the ones to complain to. There are others who appear on Fox news who have an (R) by their name, but there seem more interested in their own careers than the Party. There is certainly no unifying message that is so typical of the Democrats.
While I am searching for a Republican in charge, a noisy Democrat chorus of Kennedy, Hillary, Schumer, Rangel, Boxer, and Feinstein sing out loudly behind Harry and Nancy. There is no doubt about the Democrats. Their message may be fuzzy nonsense, but they are unified. In fact, if it weren’t for their constant harping I wouldn’t believe the Republican Party really existed.
Is there a Republican leadership? Is anyone in charge? Was the whole thing about Karl Rove being the brilliant political strategist just a big myth? In between hunting trips Cheney makes a few noises, but he doesn’t seem to be a full time employee. Condi is Condi, and the other cabinet members are lurking somewhere in the background shadows of government. That leaves me with Bush and his messages of late are not convincing me that he realizes the problem.
Somebody needs to tell the Republicans they are all sadly adrift. They are disorganized. They are out of sync. They have lost their way. They aren’t the same political party we backed so vigorously. The only positive thing they have going is the weakness of the Democrat’s message, and that is not a very comfortable thought on which to rest your fate in November.
Can anybody help me?

totally agree with this. I'm pretty disappointed in the party as a whole.

I mean the democrats are completley shameless they want the criminals for votes and power...so different yet so much the same.

Huh?

They did well on 911 and Katrina and I support the war.

I'm pissed at them for spending like Democrats, for not resolving this illegal alien bullshit; for not putting a cork in the Democrats; for not communicating well; for not finding out where certain leaks are coming from or sending Rison and Priest and half the times editorial staff to jail for publicizing the leaks; for not doing a good job in Iraq.

I'm pissed at a leadership that ain't leading.

Why do they need leadership, aren't they running the damn country? Oops, forgot that doesn't mean you are real leaders.

They don't have leaders because they aren't a party, they are a large organization that just likes power. The gulf between Arlen Specter and Tom Tancredo is enough to cover four parties in Canada. The coming battle between the middle of the road leaning Republican and the go back to church and stay there Republican will make this all too clear.

Both parties exist purely because its the only way you can accomplish political ambitions in our country today. If you want to get elected and have power, then you have to be in one of the two parties. Its shameful, but its reality.

I blame the people who call themselves republicans, the RINO's.

Bush is a RINO, Reagan was a republican
Frist is a RINO, Newt was a republican
Hannity is a RINO, Rush is a republican

The RINO's have let a bunch of panzy ass libs get the best of them. It really sad.

Next to Specter, McCain's the worst RINO of all. What are the chances for Newt in 08?
