So I have always thought I was for legalizing pot but without much to back up my opinion other than I would smoke it and pay tax on it.

Well I am having the "Legalization" conversation with a buddy and he says what about the danger it poses on a simple level like driving while high. Does the amount of people that smoke go up if pot is legal, if so than accidents caused by people high on pot increase.

So where do you stand? Why do you stand there?

Your friend is (perhaps unwittingly) being distracted by discussion of the behavior of people after they ingest cannabis.

That's a wholly distinct topic from the question of whether cannabis is best kept illegal or allowed to be legally produced and commercially distributed.

The overriding and prevalent question that needs attention to answer the latter question is this.

Which is preferable?

a) Cannabis is illegal to produce or to commercially distribute, thus leaving that multi-billion dollar per year market 100% controlled by street dealers and cartels?

or

b) Cannabis - like 99.99% of all other drugs - is made legal to produce and to commercially distribute in a market that can be sensibly regulated by an agreeable combination of government and private business?

Though very few people will answer "A" to the above question, ask your friend and report back on his response.

Obama laughed off and brushed aside any talk of legalization at his town hall meeting this morning.

They used a similiar system used by the website Digg, where citizens could "vote up" questions. It looks as though an active web campaign most likely lead by NORML led to:

the top four questions under the heading of “Financial security” concerned marijuana; on the budget, people voted up questions about marijuana to positions 1-4; marijuana was in the first and third positions under “jobs”; people boosted a plug for legalizing marijuana to No. 2 under “health care reform.” And questions about decriminalizing pot occupied spots 1 and 2 under “green jobs and energy.

Dude's driving after they smoke don't cause many accidents...you could argue they make the highways safer by bogarting the left hand lane at a hair raising speed of 30 mph.

And the extra Dorito sales at our 711's will be a good stimulus.

I had a great life as a firefighter.........32yrs...just retired!
Booze caused most of the damage for fires and MVA's 70/80/90

In later years, coke and heroin(speed ball stuff) contibuted to call load. Fires.....violence........but still booze led the pack.

Pot is WAY over rated in the "damage" area.
Cops used to say "they were going too slow, so I stopped them"......not alot of damage can be caused there.

The drug war is lost and was stupid.

I don't have the answer, but pot smokers were not a problem to society in my career.
Grow-ops were, starting in 90/00
To ship it to the USA

Banned booze created the mafia.........now banned pot has created gang wars in my usually quite town.

For those who think pot in the scourge of the world all you need to do is watch the really old government propaganda movie Reefer Madness and then watch the nuclear Duck and Cover bullshit. The government relies on stupidity in more way than one. And what amazes me is it works.
