Wrote this for my "home" board. Thought I'd copy it here and in the NFL forum to see what my fellow Pat fans and other NFL guys think.

What appeared to be their strongest position only a month ago, wide receiver, is now decimated. I failed to properly asses what had recently happened to Brady and his receiving corps.

First Edelman went down in pre-3. There is a reason Brady calls Edelman "Jewels". In the Patriot tradition of having a tough slot player to go over the middle and catch his laser underneath stuff (Troy Brown, Wes Welker), Edelman was the best of those three. Going underneath into the middle requires precise route running, toughness, and timing. Any mistake and the ball is loose with defenders all around it ready to steal it and go the other way. The receiver is going to get hit hard and often. Mental and physical toughness are a must. Takes a special guy to have those attributes and also be sure handed. Troy Brown, Wes Welker, and Edelman, all had those qualities. But Edelman added another. Brown and Welker would make the catch, then take a dive in order to preserve their bodies. Still tough, sure handed and admirable for maintaining their concentration in traffic. But Edelman added another dimension. He would catch the ball and instead of taking a dive, he would have this little bag of elusive moves that would get him yards after the catch. Truly a rare talent, plying his trade in an area of the field that few have the guts to reside in.

This is Brady's game. Underneath timing routes, which when successful as they virtually always were with Edelman in the slot, would set up the deeper routes with Hogan, sometimes last year's emerging rookie, Mitchell, and sometimes a streaking big man, Gronk, or Bennett and the expected new deep sensation, Brandin Cook.

But Edelman went down three weeks ago. The only guys who could now bang around in Brady's underneath comfort zone were Amendola and Gronk. But Amendola, although gutsy and normally sure handed, is often hurt as his body can't take the pounding of the under middle (he got hurt before halftime last night and never made it back), and Gronk, well I didn't like what I saw out of Gronk last night. Gronk had offseason back surgery. He looked very stiff and not himself last night. He didn't do much in the underneath middle. I think Gronk is playing hurt and is only a shadow of his old self. I'm praying I'm wrong here. Another couple of games will tell the story.

Bennett got let go in the offseason (couldn't afford him). Mitchell went on IR last week. Amendola left the game injured. Gronk didn't have his "Gronkness". Edelman is gone for the season.

That leaves Hogan, Cook, and a couple of no names. And nobody to go underneath to set up the rest of them. Hogan and Cook are deep ball guys. That is not Brady's bread and butter. He needs a 10 to 15 yd game to spring those deep routers.

And if Brady has to stand back there play after play and wait for deep routes to develop, his O line just isn't good enough. See the end of last night's game.

So this is the Patriots. That is Tom Brady coached by the best coach of all time. They will run and use checkdown passes to very speedy and sure handed backs. But my assessment is that will not be enough to fuel the explosive and relentless offense that we have come to expect out of the Patriots.

Unless Gronk suddenly looks like the Gronk of old, and unless Amendola can stay healthy running those underneath routes, this offense may be very broken. The pundits will say that B&B will bounce and will cite examples where they did just that. But the components may be missing to effect that resurgence. Be wary.

And I didn't even talk about the atrocious defense. That's another long story. But circumstances have colluded to also weaken the defense. Like I said, another long analysis.

Be wary.

27 points is respectable. You'll win a lot of games putting up that many
points each week. What I didn't see coming was how bad the defense looked.
It was just a complete elfoldo. One game does not a season make.

I expect that the Hoody will address the situation because well, he
is head and shoulders above every other coach in the league.

Did the Pats look vulnerable, you bet they did. If Brees torches them next
week I'll take pause. If not it will be business as usual.

More of an issue on defense where they lost Sheard, Ninkovich, Chris Long, and during the game Hightower.

Other than Malcolm Brown and Trey Flowers, there are no NFL caliber players let alone good starters left in that front 7. Van Noy is good in a supporting role but not a full blown every down guy. There is nothing there.

Personnel is missing on defense, KC abused the edges as no one on NE could set an edge at all. Hunt went wild all night.

They have two corners, and two safeties who both played poorly in week 1 but should pick it up. Patrick Chung had a brutal miss of an INT thrown right into his two hands.

Bottomline they have hardly anything in the front 7, honestly looks kind of comically bad in their front.

Offensively they'll develop a game plan to get points I don't think it will be as much of an issue. Also don't think Gronk will face Eric Berry every week. They will splash and win 10-11 games, but definitely won't go to the SB or win the SB this year unless alot of things change.

It's ironic you mention Brees and say 27pts a game will win a lot of games lol Brees scored 30pts a game several games and didn't win lol so 27 pats a wk doesn't guarantee a win. Though it's the Pats you're talking about so it gets a pass.

Im thinking Saints roll Pats next wk. possibly benching Brady at the 4th alas 2009. Last time Pats played in the Dome, last minute drive to win the game was made by an offensive lineman choke holding a Saints player to keep from rushing Brady and scoring a safety and no penalty was called. They're going to be up and ready for next wk. I can assure you. Brady lost at home? And now playing in the Dome? It's won't be easy if they win.

I agree w/Prince where Eric Berry was a huge factor in run gm & Gronk. Gronk would not have dropped that TD pass if Berry didn't knock it out. Also KC employed the SEA holding technique, which really threw off timing early. But, once officials started to flag that, it was now Brady's turn to struggle. He was really off on a lot of passes, where receivers were open & he had very good protection. He also missed open receivers on several of those 7-8 second pockets he was enjoying. Not sure what his problem was for that night.

Andy Reid has a very gifted "D" & they were clearly motivated to knock off the champs. Next wk will very much tell the tale for both teams, esp KC w/out Eric Berry.

Well ya assuming you have some semblance of a D which N.O.
hasn't had for quite awhile. In 2016 the league scoring average
was 22.7 so I'll take my chances with 27 every week.

The Pats had a league low 15.6 points given up per game last year.
If they keep giving up 42 a game they may not win any.

Preseason this year, the saints are ranked No.2 in total Defense behind Baltimore. You can say preseason doesnt mean anything but the last 4 years, the Saints defense sucked in the preseason and it translated to the regular season. NE had the worst defense this preseason and it showed up Thursday Night. I not saying Saints defense will finish top 10, but this is the most talented defense they have had in the last 5 years. New DLine coach, new LB coach, new LBs that can tackle and cover, a DE opposite Cam Jordan, and a much improved secondary. This defense wont be the laughing stock of the league this year. Alot of depth also.

The worry is with the offense. We were one of the lowest scoring teams in preseason, granted Brees, Ingram , AP, Kamara all played limited snaps. The Saints will have to knock the rust off during the games. We are going to be taking the heat off of Brees by running the ball more in a balanced attack like in 2009. The offensive line has zero depth which is a main concern until Armstead is back. Should be a much improved team than what we have seen int h past though.

Good luck this year Dave
