It seems Lon Kruger will be offered the job already.

As far as Boston saying Ralph Willard is the best coach in the country??? Come on, Holy Cross had competitive advantages in the Patriot League for the past several years, and he was nothing but mediocre at Pitt. That sounded pretty ignorant to me.

And while we're at it,
add Randy Bennett's name to the list, Reggie Theus (who has a more legit shot than Sid Green), and Bruce Pearl. And most people agree Stew Morrill is on the short list as well.

I do like the Larry Eustachy choice, I remember him getting a triple technical with 0:05 seconds left to cost me a spread at Utah State in the Big West Championship at LongBeach sports arena in 1992, and then he did the exact same thing 7 years later at Iowa State in the qtr final game. The refs did screw him in both games. Larry is a rare combo of good game coach and recruiter.

Larry would not last over 2 years in Vegas.........he would be found with a hooker in a matter of time, and that would be that.

Personally, I hope UNLV never returns to national prominence in my lifetime.

Some of the absolute worst fans of any team for any sport.

I know I piss some people off with my statements, but I tell it like it is and how I feel.........sorry.

Fair weather fans and bandwagon jumpers.

Also, as a whole, very classless.

Sorry, I realize you are probably a fan along with Arne.............but remember, I said as a whole.

I don't like it, Fish, but I can't argue with you. There are VERY few LOYAL Rebel supporters. The rest are just there to party or to jump on the bandwagon.

Fish - I enjoy seeing good quality college hoops in person and I have missed that living here in Vegas for quite some time.

Being brought up a Michigan and Michigan State fan, I find the fans at UNLV games no better or worse than the games I used to attend at the old Chrysler Arena in Ann Arbor.

GreenDoberman: Ralph Willard is a phenomenal coach and the entire hoops world will come to appreciate that fact one of these days. Don't you remember all of his hard work and accomplishments with Western Kentucky and the New York Knicks?!?

Nolan Richardson is the perfect choice for this job. If he hires his son as an assistant, though, make sure he turns in his six-shooter at the state line.

Fish - I don't remember the Spartans EVER playing at UNLV since I moved to Vegas in 1981. But if they did, I would have to root for my ORIGINAL home town team.

Nolan Richardson was fading while still at Arkansas, and is past his physical prime, he may recruit decent, but even his Arkansas teams didn't have the creme-de-la-creme Parade AA's.

After trying to replace Tark(my fav), with an imitation of Tark in Massmino(another salty old school/lovable player's coach,& title winner!), then going to young whipper-snapper that couldn't get over the hump, back to another old-school guy in Spoon, then desperately trying to land a mix of both ends in Pitino..back to square one.

UNLV has to decide what type of coach it wants, as are they gonna go young up-&-comer from small school or mid-major, old Vegas roots, or proven winner/name?

With UNLV's fairweather base, in-town entertainment time/dollar competition, & city glam, "proven name" is the route I would lean.

But the UNLV job isn't the job it once was nationally, and UCLA fumbling around out West as the one of the region's big 3(Az, UCLA, UNLV) over the last 30 years, makes fear of trying to staying an elite national power west of the Mississippi a large fear to many coaches, even with positive affirmation via Stanford & Gonzaga's rise the last decade.

Pitino would've gotten UNLV back to national promince, and the names bandied about offer nice promise, but I don't see someone in there that will "consistently" get UNLV to it's former dizzying heights from this list.

UNLV is between a rock and a hard place, as without a dominant conference affiliation, they need a "name" to jumpstart their notoreity outside Nevada again, and are gonna need an original like Tark to be as large as LV itself(why Pitino would've been perfect!).

Yet he also has to be someone that most haven't taken note of yet, so that when he rises them it will have that "When Harry Met Sally(or Baseball)" sales effect to most of the nation(IE...Coach K @Duke, Saban @ LSU,etc..)

Or they could hope Krueger, etc.are other Lute Olsens or Bobby Bowdens, yet to find the place and time for their career bests.

Personally I find Krueger, Morrill, Theus,etc..all competent, yet fear they wouldn't be able to sell or sustain the level of "spotlighting" required to get UNLV back to the top permanently.

If going for a "name" that can coach, recruit, and keep UNLV in the stratosphere..I'd make a run on Izzo(not likely to accept..agreed)..if going slightly smaller to mid-major, then make a run on Tom Crean..if going for an unknown/unproven then Johnny Dawkins(whom unlike Theus has East coast recruitng ties, and sounder fundamental emphasis).

Fish,

You obviously didn't spend enough time in So Cal. They invented the term "fair-weather fan". SC suddenly is the most popular team around town, two big seasons in football will do that for you. When they ran Robinson out of town no one wanted to see them except the alums that were giving the school 10 dimes a year to look stupid holding up the two fingers during "Fight On" while the scoreboard showed SC down by 24. The most storied football program outside South Bend in a metropolitan area of 9 million and they were lucky to draw 40,000 fans. UNLV fans aren't the best, but come on why would you expect for a town where more than two thirds of the residents weren't even born in Nevada?

I don't think it matters much who they pick. Harter and the Regents of the school are going to work hard to keep the program "under control" which basically means it has no chance of being what it was. FWIW I would go with a two coach plan. A guy like Lavin to build up the recruiting and get kids excited about UNLV, then if he doesn't win can him and get in a more established guy that can take the talent to the next level.
