The Senate voted Tuesday to invoke cloture on legislation extended unemployment benefits to the long-term unemployed. Six Republicans joined Democrats to clear the key procedural hurdle by a vote of 60-37. The vote allows the Senate to pass the final legislation with a simple majority. It isn't clear whether the House will consider the extension, but the political pressure is likely to increase.

Indiana GOP Sen. Dan Coats provided the crucial 60th vote to block a Republican filibuster on the extension. Five other Republicans, Sens. Dean Heller (NV), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Kelly Ayotte (NH), Rob Portman (OH) and Susan Collins (ME) also supported the Democrat cloture vote. The measure will likely receive a final vote later this week.

The extension of the unemployment benefits, which provided up to 99 weeks of assistance to the unemployed, expired at the end of 2013. Democrats have seized on the issue as a part of their broader rhetoric on income inequality.

The larger problem, of course, is that almost two years of unemployment assistance is even necessary. It's a reflection of how weak the economic recovery has been.

If a person can't find a job in almost 2 years they simply are not trying hard enough. I've said before that extending unemployment benefits is a joke. I agree with WVJoe that the economy is not as bad as what most think, but I also agree we can't keep extending these benefits for people that are obviously too lazy to go out and find work because there are jobs out there.

Yes there are some jobs, especially where you and I live, but in MANY parts of the country there's a whole lot of nothing. And most of the jobs that are there are low level min wage pieces of shit. I know numerous people who are still looking for jobs. Some have taken jobs for 30-40% less money in other fields only to then get screwed when they apply for jobs in their "real" sector. One guy had an interviewer flat out tell him how fucked he was (he went to school with the guy so he told him "off the record"). He said "Dude, you're screwed. Nobody is gonna hire you when you put that low level job on your resume. And if you leave it off, everyone is going to think you suck because you couldn't get hired." He told him to go back to school and change careers.

So...we now have millions of people who can't get hired in fields they used to be in because they lost that job and 1) sat on the sidelines looking for work for two years or 2) They took "whatever" they could find but get looked down on it for doing so.

DON'T FEED ME the "People are too lazy" shit. Sure X percent are and always have been. But almost all the unemployed WANT to be working at a real job, not some piece of shit dead end gig like fast food. The asswipes in suits are not hiring, and the ones that are continue to fuck over people who desperately need the work.

Employers want best value for their dollar, just as you as a consumer want the best value for your dollar.

The fact is, if the cost of living keeps rising because of a tanking USD ("the poor are getting poorer" as the left keeps telling us), it's not your employer's responsibility to constantly keep up with the shenanigans over at the Fed -- IT'S THE GOVERNMENT'S FAULT!

I agree with you that there are some places where finding jobs is easier than other places. But let me ask you this...if you were living someplace where times were hard and you went 2 years without finding a job, what would you do?

I've got 42 rentals - all but two are HUD tenants - that would be Section 8 Housing - now, I'm sure you read a book and can recite what the author said but in real life I can promise you that Housing Voucher and unemployment check is sufficient for these folks so long as it allows them to sit on the porch and play dominoes - not trying to argue with u either - just telling u how it is in the real world

That's how it is in your world, and again, there will always be abusers of the system, any system. There are other real worlds where folks are looking for a job and can't find one. Isn't one of the provisos of the extented benefits is that you have to prove you're looking for work? I know there are ways to circumvent that, but again, abusers will abuse. Most folks don't.
