the NBA playoffs have been great, maybe the best ever so far, but

is the team losing and / or not covering with 6 minutes left the same team that actually wins and / or covers at the end of the game? no matter how big the lead was? with a few exceptions of course.

certainly seems that way

Just wondering why you think it ranks up there with the best ever? Now that I look back, there have been a lot of good games.... OT... etc...

number of OT's, amazing finishes and upsets

usually the NBA is about higher seeded teams going through the motions, no real concerns about upsets. Especially the highest seeded teams

this year 7 out of 8 series are either still in doubt or the lower seeded team has a 3-1 advantage (which is still in play IMHO)

7 out of 8 can still go either way

OK. You're making a good case...

Am I being too nostalgic, or do we not have as many true superstars in the game as we did 10, 20 years ago?

I'd actually argue the opposite. I think there are so many great players/borderline superstars, that it is more difficult to stand out now than in years past.

From a sheer numbers standpoint, I'm not sure the league has ever had this much young talent.

The Thunder games alone have given me a few more gray hairs. I would like to see a nice normal 20 point blowout. But I don't think it's going to happen. Memphis ALWAYS gives OKC fits because of their front court. Plus Brooks is still trying to play street ball offense, with 2 on 5 it's feeding right into the Memphis game plan.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing... but what is your list of superstars today in the NBA (obviously the list starts with Durant and Lebron).

Not just "stars" but "superstars"

Yeah, I'm not really disagreeing either. I'd be interested in seeing everyone's list of superstars.

I guess regardless if they are classified as star, super star, or just a great basketball player, I was just saying the league seems more talented now than ever. And I think it bodes well for the future because it seems like the majority of that talent is really young.

And because there are so many truly great players in the league right now, perhaps it's more difficult to distance yourself from the pack and achieve that "superstar" status.

Short list of superstars right now to me: LeBron, Durant, Curry (some will prob disagree with that one), Blake Griffin maybe. Aldridge is slowly trying to turn into one but his location doesn't help.

In years past, I think a guy like Harden might have been deemed a superstar but is not currently because there are so many other guys in the league that are pretty close to his level.

I could be wrong but until Turner with TBS/TNT started putting all the weeknight games on TV, I believe a lot of the 1st rd games weren't on national TV until 1994 or so. I'm not sure when direcTV started airing all local broadcasts but I think that was after the fact.

A lot of games were just on local TV and premium TV in the area.

I would agree it is the best I can remember for rd 1. A lot of parity now in the game with the way the salary cap is setup, a lot of the newer coaches are pretty smart in how to utilize their talent and then the 3 pointer (always known as the great equalizer in basketball) is shot more than ever and more proficiently than ever. Every team being so good at shooting 3s makes the games a lot more unpredictable/gives lesser teams a better chance.

I actually think they should move the 3pt line back a little but thats another discussion for another thread I suppose.

Umm...That kinda seems like rock and jock games on MTV back in the 90s, remember those? Seems kinda hokey to me and too big of a deviation from basketball as we know it.

I dunno but I definitely would like to see the 3pt line being moved back. The range these guys have is unbelieveable, you are even starting to see a lot more power forwards be able to hit 3s. The corner 3 is the shortest distance in all of basketball and the teams know this, they make a lot of these guys just practice corner 3s all day in the offseason. Spurs were the first team to realize this but seems like rest of the league is catching up.

A open corner 3 has more long-term value than any shot besides an open shot from 4 feet and in.

Yea I agree. If they move the 3 point line back further, the corner 3 would have even more value

Yeah my other idea is to just make the court bigger actually. Guys are so big and fast now and can cover so much ground I think they've outgrown the current size of the court a little...
