Washington State has just missed out on going bowling over the last few years, and now it might be a bit of a rebuilding season if underappreciated QB Alex Brink doesn't lead the offense to a hot start.

Do the powers that be still have Mike Price’s phone number? Not since he was on the Palouse has Washington State been much of a threat to crack the upper echelon of the Pac-10. Yeah, the 2003 edition won an unexpected ten games in Bill Doba’s debut, but since then, the program has gone just 8-17 in league games with no bowl appearances while squandering all of the equity Price had accumulated.

Last year’s Cougars opened 6-3, but closed with three losses, capped by an embarrassing home defeat to Washington, which kept them out of the postseason and ended the Huskies’ six-game losing streak. Doba bleeds crimson and gray and is very well liked by the university, however, he’s firmly on the hot seat, entering 2007 with a team that has way too many holes to feel good about a winning season.

If this year is going to be anything more than a rebuilding season in Pullman, the Cougars will have to get contributions from unlikely sources, such as redshirt and true freshmen. In particular, the offensive line needs an infusion of talent and the back seven on defense will be looking to replace five starters. At least Wazzu knows it’ll go to battle with quarterback Alex Brink, a solid fourth-year starter, who’s accounted for 55 touchdowns throughout his career.

Because of its unique location, Washington State never attracts the West Coast’s best and brightest, but had the knack in the past of locating the right kids for its system, coaching them up and shocking the Pac-10 once every few seasons. Now more than ever, the Cougars need one of those years to improve Doba’s job security and recapture a hint of the magic from the old days. This is the team that can do it.

What to watch for on offense: Brink is a nice quarterback who throws a soft deep ball and moves well outside the pocket, but he’d be far better with a little pass protection and some support from the running game. An ineffective Cougar line could struggle again now that its best blocker, tackle Charles Harris, has graduated. When Brink does have time, he’ll be looking for flanker Brandon Gibson and tight end Jed Collins, a couple of receivers that showed flashes of all-league potential in 2006.

What to watch for on defense: Since the end of last season, the Cougars have endured a number of key losses headlined by the departure of coordinator Robb Akey to Idaho. Doba will assume the job he held for nine years, but Akey had a special ability to energize the troops. If Doba doesn’t survive, don’t be surprised if Akey gets lured back across the border, making him the third Vandal coach in three years to bolt Moscow for a Pac-10 gig. Figure Wazzu to once again be nasty against the run and vulnerable to the pass after losing three starters from the secondary. It loaded up on defensive backs in February, but none bigger than Terry Mixon, a junior college safety, who’ll play immediately.

The team will be far better if … the entire special teams unit does an about-face from last year. From field goal accuracy to punt and kickoff coverage, Washington State was horrid, putting the special teams coach under the microscope with Doba. If the Cougars are going to overachieve this year, they’ve got to be solid at the little things, beginning with special teams.

The Schedule: The non-conference schedule starts off with a bang going to Wisconsin for the season opener, but then things ease up immeasurably with home dates with San Diego State and Idaho. The Cougars get five Pac 10 road games including trips to USC, Oregon and Cal to squash any dreams of going to the Rose Bowl. Even so, there’s a nice mid-season stretch of four home dates in six games including battles with UCLA, Arizona State and Oregon State which will go a long way to determining the bowl pecking order.
Best Offensive Player: Senior QB Alex Brink. Now entering his fourth season as the starter, Brink is the undisputed leader of the Cougar offense and one of the school’s most prolific passers. While not off the charts in any one particular area, he does throw soft, catchable passes and has a knack for making something out of nothing when he’s flushed from the pocket.

Best Defensive Player: Senior DT Ropati Pitoitua. If only Pitoitua can remain healthy for an entire season, he just might realize the enormous potential that matches his hulking physique. When the 6-8, 290-pound monster on the Cougar interior isn’t nursing an injury, he’s swallowing up overmatched ball carriers and obstructing the sight lanes of opposing quarterbacks.

Key player to a successful season: Someone, anyone at left tackle. The Cougar offensive line was mediocre at best in pass protection last season, and now it welcomes back four starter-caliber players who should form a better wall. Basically, the Cougars have plenty of guards and no real tackle, and they certainly don’t have one worthy of protecting Blink’s blind side. At least not yet.
Bobby Byrd, last season’s left tackle, was a bit out of position and will be tried out at guard.

The season will be a success if ... the Cougars go to a bowl. While it’s only been three years since Wazzu stunned Texas in the Holiday Bowl, it seems like decades ago. There’s enough offensive firepower to beat some of the better Pac 10 teams, while the schedule has just enough softies to bank on a nice base of three wins (Idaho, San Diego State and Stanford). Anything less than a 13th game and a winning season might mean a new era in Cougar football next season.

Key game: Sept. 29 at Arizona. Wazzu was 6-3 needing one more win to get to a bowl, but a 27-17 home gaffe started a three-game losing streak and no post-season. This year, the Cougars will be coming off a likely loss at USC and with a rough four-game stretch playing Arizona State, at Oregon, UCLA and at Cal after dealing with the Wildcats.
2006 Fun Stats:
- Washington State 1st quarter scoring: 46 – Washington State 2nd quarter scoring: 104
- Sacks: Washington State 36 for 211 yards – Opponents 29 for 181 yards
- Kickoff return average Opponents 23.6 yards – Washington State 17.5 yards
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Ok, so things look bleak this year in Pullman. Like the article mentions, the passing game should be fun to watch. If only Doba can bring back that DC magic he had just a few years ago...

Thoughts from UoweDucks, Conan, etc on the preview? I think it hits it right on the head really. It's all gonna come down to offensive line play and the secondary just holding on for dear life in games.

Addict,
I think that it is a pretty good summary. In my mind the biggest issue at WSU is depth and it while it has always been an issue it got a lot worse when Price left. WSU overreached on way to many borderline guys in recruiting and come time for those guys to get into school they couldn't get in due to grades. I think that recently there has been some improvement here but a few years of losing up to 1/3 of recruiting classes will take its toll.
Last year started out great but injuries killed the cougs down the stretch. This year health is so important. If the 1's can stay healthy they can compete if not, trouble.
I would also add that it is possible that the resurgence of Boise St. has hurt the cougs more than any other P10 program. Price made a living of off getting the eastern wa, Idaho, Montana undersized tough guys and coaching them up. Now Boise is getting some of these guys...

I like Doba but he could be gone if WSU doesn't have a better year. I used to think Levenseller would be the shoe in but now I think it would be better to get someone new there to freshen things up. We'll see.

Football recruits fall short in academics
WSU Daily Evergreen

Waylon Safranski
July 1, 2004

When the Cougar football team announced its recruiting class in February, numerous recruiting publications ranked it in the nation's top 25, and head coach Bill Doba gave it an "eight or nine" on a scale of 10.

But the class has lost some of its immediate luster, as some signees won't qualify academically and, therefore, will not compete with the Cougars this fall.

Robin Pflugrad, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, said high school signees safety Randy Estes of Long Beach, Calif.; defensive back Michael Willis of Lincoln High School in Tacoma; defensive lineman Lawrence Ball of Fresno, Calif. and receiver Benny Ward of Van Nuys, Calif. did not qualify academically.

Letrell Myers, a junior college signee defensive end, is also "98 percent done" Pflugrad said.

They are still waiting for test scores from running back J.T. Diederichs of Ballard High in Seattle and receiver Charles Dillon of Oxnard, Calif., and Pflugrad said there is only a slight chance they will qualify.

Pflugrad said the coaches can only do so much to help the recruits get qualified academically.

"We can't go over (to the schools) and make sure they get to every class," he said. "Geographically, it's difficult in Pullman to keep in touch. And there are a lot of distractions during your senior year (of high school). You get pulled in a lot of different directions."

Doba's staff will have their hands full as they try to help these players get into a junior college and keep them off the recruiting market. The players who did not qualify are not bound to their letter of intent after the start of fall classes, Pflugrad said.

"That's when the piranhas come out," he said. "Other schools try to eat the flesh off of someone else's program. We want to avoid another school scooping them up - but it's always a concern."

Pflugrad said the coaches will attempt to keep a line of communication with the players, but the process can turn into a wild goose chase.

"We are dealing with a new can of worms," he said. "They have to pay their own way and we tell them to do stuff, but it's tough. Sometimes they'll want to stay close to home, but that can be the worst thing to do. They got their buddies around who might not be going to school, and the environment is usually not about studying."

The losses hurt even more because the coaches anticipated Estes, Willis and Myers all had the ability to not only play, but contribute this fall.

I pretty much agree with UoD's assessment of the team's situation. 6-6 would be a mild surprise to me. They will have a hard time with teams that have reasonably good passing game and at this point I'd also have to question some obvious holes in their DL. I am not sure how well they fare in the LB category either. They will put up the points though, most of their offense will be about throwing the ball. Nothing especially new. They have the talent to move the ball that way. I think some early totals might be the way to go betting their games. They should light up the board unless they meet up with a team that has good corners and a good pass rush. I can think of several right off the top of my head. I also think that Doba will be down the road after this season. Making a bowl might save him but I can't see how he will pull it off. I can see possibly 3 conference wins this year. If they can do in Arizona, that would be a surprise to me. The Coug's defense is atrocious. I wish them luck.

Very good points UoD, especially the idea that Boise is taking some of the Cougs recruits. Think that is very true, because really when it comes to prep kids in Eastern WA, Idaho, and Montana it comes down to WSU and Boise really if the kid wants to go D-I (ok, so UofI gets one here and there).

The way I'm looking at the schedule is as long as we win the games we are supposed to win (Idaho, SDSU, Stanford) and then get that road win @ Arizona which is a very winnable game, I think we got a shot at a bowl if we can win half of our conference home games. Here's to hoping we can get revenge on the mutts in Seattle this year. I'll take a stab at the schedule, what the hell...

@ Wiscy L (Could get ugly)
SDSU W (won't blow this in Seattle)
Idaho W (I still hate that we play them every damn year)
@ USC L (what a fun Pac-10 opener!)
@ Arizona W (my reach road win that could spring us into a bowl)
Arizona State L (ASU pretty much owns us the last decade)
@ Oregon L (Finally got whats comin to us after playing UO seemingly every year in Pullman)
UCLA L (Think we could have a chance in this one, beat em good last year in Pasadena, whats to say we can't get this one at home? I'll make it up a loss though but it should be a tight game throughout)
@ Cal L (20 point loss in the books)
Stanford W (Doba's head would surely roll if he lost this one)
Oregon State W (Alright, my home upset on senior day... We always play OSU tough, beat em in Corvalis last year, maybe the Beavs are going to be that good but I think we pull out a 38-35 type win)
@ UW W (Brink goes out on top going 3-1 in his career against UW. We should light up the UW secondary here while Locker won't do quiet enough against our bad D)

So that's 6-6, and with a reach win at home against the Beavs. Not looking very promising at all...

That would be a reach in the Beaver game Addict, but this is the Pac-10 and strange things happen all the time. Since you mentioned the Beavers, can you guess which defense last season (in the whole country) had the highest number of sacks, knock downs, hits and hurry-ups on opposing QB's? Where did I see it? I think I caught that on an ipod audio at ESPN. Now how would that upset the apple cart if they duplicated that this year with everyone (8 players) back again and their best pass rusher with 9 sacks last year finally winning a starting job?????

I remember last season predicting that Or. St. with their 5* offensive line would be a force to reckon with, then they got humiliated in Boise. That toned me down and after that I was never quite as high on them. I should have been. Now they've got everyone back including their OL but with a new QB who is pretty good and comes with some credentials. (and plenty of protection.)

Sorry to go off topic but keep an eye out for Or. St. again. They're better and all they need is for Canfield to play it cool and get his reps. At home there could be better value ATS this season and especially the totals. Opposing QBs beware. I'd also look for match-ups where their opposition depends on consistent passing to move the ball. The Beavers should mess them up. The most important betting aspect of that would be in totals bets. They kept the scores under the total 9 times last season and they covered 70%+. They were even more than that on the road (6 out of 7 games went under and they were 5-2 ATS) That's exactly the picture I see of the team again this year, maybe even more so.

I know most of this would send chills up Pags spine because he's very edgy about betting the Beavers anyplace but at Reiser. :>Grin> But the numbers don't lie.

The Cougs best chance is to hold serve vs. the teams you should beat and then depend on catching one or 2 Pac teams napping with someone big on deck or maybe a letdown after a big win (maybe both). It happens. But bowling with a 7-5? I can't see it.

I don't have as much faith in WSU @ AZ that you have ... AZ returns a ton of starters and I have a hard time seeing them getting beat in what will be their home P10 opener. You are right though THAT is a key game for bowl hopes.
I have mentioned in another post that I see that coug/OSU game as a tossup. Not much love lost between these two squads. I almost always defer to the senior QB in a conf home game vs a rook.

Like I said, it will be senior day for Brink, Bumpus, etc.

I hear your points Conan, and I know this OSU team is going to be tough. This series always brings out a great game year in and year out with a lot of points most of the time (Of course last year was 13-6), but you get what I'm saying.

Who knows, I'm just hoping we pull a WSU basketball and come out of nowhere just when everyone thinks were dead. If we don't bring some kind of magic out of nowhere, Doba is gone and that's really the bottomline here.

Big big if.... end of story. Time for the alums to ante up, put some pressure where it belongs and find another Mike Price.
