INDIANA ST. 78 - Southern Illinois 55—
Surging ISU thinking it has a shot
at NCAA at-large consideration with a fast finish and rousing midweek win over
Valley heavyweight Creighton
(not to mention a December win over red-hot
ACC power Miami-Florida)
in its back pocket. And expect no letdown after
Creighton win from surging Sycamores (13-3 last 16 vs. line!) in revenge spot
against SIU side that needed season-high 29 points from recently-slumping G
Desmar Jackson to score 76-71 win at Carbondale on Jan. 12. Barry Hinson's
Salukis have been very erratic thanks in part to subpar long-range shooting
(only 30% beyond arc), contributing to their poor SU (2-11) and spread (4-9)
marks last 13 since just before Christmas. SIU much more likely to suuffer
letdown after rare positive effort in midweek upset over Wichita. 12-SIU -1 76-

MIAMI-FLORIDA 81 - North Carolina 66—
Matchups look a bit scary for
UNC side that has had problems with its ballhandling against pressure
defenses, which is exactly what the Tar Heels can expect from Miami and HC
Jim Larranaga’s pet “scramble” looks that helped the Canes pull out last
Saturday’s game at NC State. Good news on attack end lately for Miami, too,
as the return to active duty of 6-10 Miami C Reggie Johnson (who missed a
month due to a thumb injury) has also loosened the paint for frontline mate 6-11
Kenny Kadji (13.4 ppg), who has a bit more room to roam out to the
intermediate-range jump shots that he loves.
Let’s see how the Heels’ TOprone
frosh PG Marcus Paige handles himself in the face of extra pressure from
Miami’s many stop-end traps.

GEORGIA ST. 74 - Towson 64—
Georgia State was betrayed by a slow
start when it fell flat on Wednesday at Wilmington. But 6-5 frosh G R.J. Hunter
(son of Panther HC Ron) is now tearing up the CAA with 30.3 ppg the last three
outings! And Hunter burned Towson for 27 in GSU’s mild 71-69 upset in the
Baltimore suburbs on Jan. 21.
Note the Panthers’ 6-2 spread mark last their
eight and “overs” last six.
12-Gsu +5 71-69; 11-GSU -25 57-42
MARQUETTE 78 - DePaul 54—
Not too interested in picking the spot where
DePaul (3-8 vs. line last 11) might deliver a big effort, as Oliver Purnell’s side
has appeared to quit on more than one occasion in the past few weeks
(such as
its midweek embarrassment at home vs. Villanova).
The Blue Demons still
have only two reliable scoring threats (F Cleveland Melvin & G Brandon Young),
and Marquette regained its balance in a midweek win over South Florida after
an ugly Super Bowl Sunday loss at Louisville. The Golden Eagles, who are
resuming their march toward a possible Big Dance protected seed, have won
and covered four of their last five. 11-Mar -9' 89-76

Detroit 75 - WIS.-GREEN BAY 67—
Green Bay’s best effort could pose a
problem for Detroit. But Horizon sources suggest that surging the Titans (have
won and covered last three thru Feb. 7) are ready to take control of the league.
The modern Resch Center is not likely to unnerve Detroit after several preconference
trips into Big East-land and other intimidating locales, and Detroit’s
backcourt quickness (led by G L’il Ray McCallum and his 26 points) proved too
much in the Titans’ Jan. 5 win at Calihan Hall, where McCallum and backcourt
mate Jason Calliste and F Juwan Howard Jr. continued to draw fouls from
Green Bay on their commando raids into the paint (Titans ended up converting
38 of 42 FTs!). 12-DET -8 84-76; 11-Det +1 80-73, DET -8' 77-74 CABLE TV—

HOUSTON over Tulane by 1 to 3—
11-TUL -7' 75-54, HOU -2 82-53
VILLANOVA 67 - South Florida 53—
USF HC Stan Heath will attempt to
slow the pace on Nova. But the Cats already overcame those tactics at Tampa
on Jan. 9, when the Nova used inside strength (led by sr. PF Mouphtaou Yarou’s
16 points and 13 boards) in a 61-53 win when the Cats also owned the glass by
a 39-28 count. Coach Jay Wright will not have much to worry about if his
collection of sharpshooters nails another 59% from the floor (70% in 2
nd half!) as
it did in its midweek romp at DePaul, with Nova also hitting 10 of 18 beyond the
arc.
The Cats also need every win to stay on the NCAA Selection Committee
radar.

UAB 73 - Marshall 58—
Don’t look now, but formerly go-against UAB has
covered three straight for new HC Jerod Haase, including upsets over UTEP &
Tulsa and a near-miss (but cover) vs. high-flying Southern Miss in the last ten
days. And the Blazers have some bite if recently-struggling juco F Rod Rucker
(13.8 ppg & 50% from floor) is rediscovering some of his early-season form that
he flashed again in UAB’s midweek win over the Golden Hurricane when scoring
17. That sometimes-invisible Marshall defense disappeared again in the Herd’s
91-75 loss Wednesday at Tulane, dropping MU to 4-14 vs. the spread. 11-Mar

Akron 76 - MIAMI-OHIO 56—With Keith Dambrot’s Akron (unbeaten
since Dec. 15; nation’s-best 14-game SU win streak!)
positioning itself for a
possible NCAA at-large berth if it should stumble in the upcoming MAC Tourney
at Cleveland, doubt the Zips (who have been immune from flat efforts in the last
month) have too much trouble at Millett Hall. Scoring balance and intimidating
defensive presence in paint provided by shot-swatting 7-0 sr. C Zeke Marshall
(3.5 blocks pg) have Akron built for a possible March run, similar to fellow loop
member Ohio last season. It’s been tough sledding for new RedHawk HC John
Cooper, whose ranks were thinned early in season by the loss of key F Bill
Edwards. No home edge in Oxford as there was in the Charlie Coles era (Miami
has lost its last three SU as host). 11-Akr -2' 65-60, AKR -10 74-59
KENTUCKY 63 - Auburn 54—
UK appears to be moving away from the
NCAA bubble and onto safer postseason ground, but Coach Cal’s young and
precocious Cats have still covered only 2 of their last 7 at Rupp Arena.
Meanwhile, Auburn has almost forgotten what it is like to beat UK after its Jan.
19 home setback by 75-53 count was its 14th straight loss (and 28
th in last 29
meetings) vs. the Lexington bunch. Notwithstanding that previous meeting,
Tony Barbee’s Tigers have been covering some numbers lately (9-3 last 12),
and it would be hard to imagine Auburn bricking
all 15 of its three-point attempts
(!) as was the case in the first meeting. The inflated number could provide some
value for the Tigers, especially if they can slow the pace, as they did in their 49-
37 midweek root-canal victory over Bama. 12-Ky -10 75-53; 11-Ky -17 68-53
