I was thinking of making the switch to the Dish but have heard mixed reviews...

Is the Dish worth it, or is it still a problem when the weather is bad?

and which Dish Network is best?

thanks

Dante, I don't think you get cable Internet access bundled for the same price as just getting regular cable TV - you have to pay a premium for it, even if it is cheaper. I have RoadRunner service from TimeWarner even though I don't have the cable TV, and right now it's running me $44.95/mo - it would probably be cheaper if I did have the TV package but I don't know how much.

I've got a DirecTv triple (for the 3 satellites) LNB dish on my roof, as I have a clear-enough southern path to the satellites. I got DirecTv years ago when I found out that they had an exclusive deal with the NFL to offer that all-games package, and when cable still wasn't digital. And they're going to have this exclusivity for another 3-4 years, so if you want that package, you have no choice. DirecTv is fine but I do have sporadic problems with bad weather (snow or rain) cutting off the signal, but it hasn't happened often enough to really piss me off. Besides, I've got the NetFlix service, and if I can't find something else to do I can always throw a DVD on the barbie - lol. Also, if you've got high-definition, DirecTv does have ESPN-HD, though of course not everything they broadcast is HD (most of it isn't - only some featured games during the week), and they offer a small package of pure HD programs in addition to a pay channel and the HBO and Showtime channels (if you've bought those packages that include those). DirecTv also offers the local Kansas City channels on the low-numbered channels, which I get even though I can pull them in off my old-fashioned roof TV antenna, simply because the signals are better for the most part. Finally, don't know where you are but in KC all 3 big networks (CBS, NBC, ABC) offer a separate over-the-air HD channel, which are great - FOX is supposed to early next year - just fyi for you to check into that in your market.

Dante,
I have a dish DIRECT TV, I love it but when it snows or ice forms on the eye of the dish you lose signal!Had to go out in the snow storms this year and clean off the dish 5 times! But I still think its better than cable! Its great in areas that don't have snow! I get their sport packages all year round and cable don't have football I don't think??

Dante - right you are, as far as paying extra. Point is, it won't be that great an increase. Personally I cannot live without that NFL package

I am tired of Comcast`s lack of respect for loyal customers...its a shame we only have one company to choose from. Comcast has the worst customer service people around...

Now I just need to see one of those dish commercials,lol.. I see them all the time (when I wasn`t looking) free installation, three rooms etc...

Does anyone have an 800 number to call?

I have no idea how it works to get the installation and signup for satellite TV..

Jazz, Time Warner gives a $5/month discount off of Road Runner if you have cable.

I'm not happy with the amount of HD programming that Time Warner offers. Did you have to buy an HD box for DirecTv? The cable company gave me one w/o additional cost over the standard digital box. They said that you have to buy one from DirecTv for $600. Is that true?

nothing compares to directv. my bro sells home theatre for circuit city and he swears by it. he also says its the only way you can get everything 100 % digital. digital cable is not true digital for every channel. also tivo becomes a lot cheaper if you have DTV.

i am DTV obsessed. i love it.

Where do you live?

I live in the northeast so the prospect of me losing a signal during bad weather (rain, snow, etc.) is not appealing.

Journeyman,
I actually worked for Comcast for several years in White Marsh. It was my job to talk people out of switching to the dish and explaining why cable was better. As soon as I quit Comcast, I got Direct TV and hated it. I was in Owings Mills and the signal would go out with any kind of storm at all (rain or snow). I like most of this area am stuck with Comcast. It's expensive as hell and any call after 5:00 to customer service will involve a long wait. A good thing I learned is that they route sales calls immediately to a rep. So even if you are calling about a technical problem, billing, etc. always choose the prompt that you want new service. Your call will be answered immediately. Also, don't hesitate to ask for a supervisor. Good luck.

Hanover: I don't know what deals DTV offers now for HD boxes, if any, but when I got a high-def TV several years ago I bought an RCA converter box from an online dealer, not DTV, for around $550 to convert the satellite and over-the-air (very important if you have the old-fashioned TV antenna hooked up as the alternate signal source) signals to HD signals my TV would display properly. DTV may now offer HD-ready boxes, I honestly don't know. Best bet is to call them up, and if the first-level CSR you speak with is clueless, ask to speak to a supervisor and so on until you can find out - they may have you talk with a techie.

I'm in the NE as well. I lost a signal maybe once or twice this last winter. Only was for a few minutes. Then it came back on.

As a football fan I really want to get a dish to get the NFL package but this thread shows that a dish's performance largely depends on your particular location. Some folks report infrequent outages and others report more outages than I would like.

I don't have as much time for TV as I would like so I know that the first day my dish is down I'm going to be friggin pissed!!! As much as I hate those bastards that run cable tv it might be the best option other than paying for both.
