Changes to the coaching responsibilities at USC are starting, according to HC Steve Sarkisian. OC Clay Helton, who coached USC t0 a bowl win (45-20) against Fresno State, will take over "some of the offensive play calling responsibilities" from Sark. According to Sark, this has been in the works since the spring, but the timing of the announcement still leaves room for thought. According to Sark, he wants to be able to focus onthe entire team, not just the offense.
My take. Simple. It is really up to DC Justin Wilcox now. If Wilcox can be successful running the defense, and Helton continue his success with the offense, Sark can be an overseer and concentrate on what he really does best. That is recruit. Whether or not you SEC, Big 10, and Big 12 homers want to admit it or not, Sark is one of the top 5 recruiters in the nation. He ranks right up there with Alabama and Florida State and is way ahead of anything that the Big 12 or Big 10 has to offer. This also sets the table for Helton to take over as the HC if Sark cannot develop a winner this season at USC. A winner defined as winning the difficult Pac 12 South division.
