Here are my opinions of some NFL announcers.

Best:
Dick Enberg -- Calls the game with passion and enthusiasm. Never biased towards either team. Is smart enough to shut up after a big play happens and let us hear the crowd go crazy. Legend in my book. "Ooooooh my!!"

Underrated:
Mike Patrick -- They should fire Theisman and Mcguire and pair him up with someone new.

Overrated:
Al Michaels -- He always tries to be ultra-witty. Uses too many big words. Constantly references something that just happened in the game to something in the past. Like during the TB. vs. Oak. Super Bowl when a FG attempt was botched. The ball ended up in the kickers hands who then tried to throw it. The play wasn't even over and he brings up Garo Yapremian. He was so biased towards Oak. in that game because of Madden it ruined the telecast. He is so lucky he called the USA. vs. USSR. gold medal hockey game in 1980. It literally made his career.

Joe Buck -- FOX must think a lot of him to let him call last years Super Bowl between NE. and Philly. Is that the best they can do? He way overreacted to Randy Moss's fake moon.

Worst:
Greg Gumbel -- Why is he CBS's #1 announcer over Enberg. It is beyond me how this guy got to call the NE. vs. Car. Super Bowl. Great game! Painfully dull call. No enthusiasm.

Does anyone remember when NBC televised a Mia. vs. NYJ. game back in the eighties with no announcers? I thought it was cool. Sometimes less is better.

agreed Thorne is great. I also like Gus Johnson as well

Gus Johnson is the man! Every NCAA tourney game he does is much more exciting because of him. His energy, passion, and enthusiam really make watching much more enjoyable, in my opinion.

I was actually thinking about making this exact thread earlier. Gary Thorne is a great commentator, and easily the most versatile.

Dick Enberg is also great. There are a ton of good ones out there...

and pair anyone with Bill Raftery and they'll become a instant legend. Onions!

Robfunk knows what I'm talking about.

Also, I know Vin Scully is a HOF'er but this guy just talks way too much for TV broadcasts, its like he's doing the game on the radio, he comments on every minute detail...what is Vinny now 85?

can't argue this point - but Vin IS the dodgers just like Chick WAS the lakers and once Chick left us - what a void that created. chick had lost it somewhat (OK - i am being kind here) but chick was like everyone's grandfather, father, uncle, brother (for some), nephew, cousin, etc. - he was loved by all. when he died EVERY SINGLE tv station in town (2,4,5,7,9,11 and 13) covered it as well as Fox Sports Net. substitute Vin for Chick and you have the same thing. back when i was in kindergarten mom tells me i went to school with Vin's kid and was friends with him and was invited over to the house - but turned that offer down. when coming back from the 1992 winter olympics i flew into JFK and was scrambling to try and catch my flight to LAX when i saw Vin and knew he was going to be scrambling, too - to catch that same flight. i mentioned this to him and he told me the LAX flight was delayed we had plenty of time. so here i am 2,500 miles from LAX and Vin STILL was a blessing.

and for those who thing Gary Thorne or Mike Emrick is the best NHL guy - WRONG

Bob Miller (Kings) is the best - or at least those of us who have been LUCKY enough to hear him for what seems like forever believe. i have met Bob several times and you will be hard pressed to find a cooler guy to deal with as well as over the top nice!

I don't know about the best one but Bill Walton is the worst and there's nobody even close to him.
