These opponents of John Kerry, who have called into question his medals, have also called into question all medals given out in service of our country.
I guess any Vet who has received a medal, needs to be investigated. These people have done a great disservice to all vets who have received a medal.
Their hatred of Kerry for protesting the Viet Nam war and there zeal to have a non vet, like Bush, be reelected,is a slap in the face for all Americans who have defended our country. Unlike our President and our Vice President.

Sonny - Vietnam Vets hate Kerry because he threw those medals over the Whitehouse walls - that's what Kerry thought about those medals - he threw them away.
That's the disservice that Kerry did to all vets - along with accusing Vietnam Vets of commiting attrocities.

bblight: do you watch news to be informed or to be entertained. I admit that BBC news is quite boring because news, in itself, tends to be quite boring...however there are obvious exceptions. What I find great is that BBC CAN be boring because they are state-owned and have their own channel - in other words, although they are aware of ratings, they will probably never be put off the air because they dont rely on private funds (mainly advertising). I sympathize with American 'news' organizations because they have stiff competition and must find new ways to keep the audience's attention. Therefore, they tend to try to find ways to be entertaining. However, news organizations should have an obligation to really provide fair and balanced news. Just because FOX news says they do does not make it so.

You want entertainment, go to the circus...FOX NEWS
You want news, watch BBC.

In my opinion, the BBC tends to review the news rather than report it.

As for simple words, well... in the heterogenous society where I come from, we like to keep it simple so everyone will understand - you see, I live in a representative democracy where everyone has a say - no matter what their station in life, or the level of education they received.

You might prefer an elitist society, but I like the more economically and socially mobile culture we have here in the good ole' US of A.

Hey, blight, you know what the BBC is?? It's [egad!] pro-Britain (as in the citizenry, not Blair.) You know what Fox News and CNN are?? They're pro-American (as in the citizen, not Bush.) If a market exists for a certain slant on the news, it will be served.

If the day comes when Canada gets Fox News, and, if it's anything as childish and unimportant as its website, I doubt I will be watching it.

The way you on the Right freak about media bias but do not simultaneously have anything to say about mass corporate media mergers under the direction of Powell Jr. is freakin' astounding to me. Your media is going to be a fascist puppet-arm of your gov't if you don't keep an eye out. You'll be praying for the day when 'media bias' meant too Left or too Right.

xpanda - calm down, the media isn't called the fourth estate for nothing. Unless, like the BBC and Pravda, it's just another propaganda arm for the state.

As for the news... In the United States it's undergoing a revolutionary change that not everyone likes! People have access to more and more information, and tend to focus on the facets of that information that they prefer. Cable and dish TV are diminishing the power of the big three networks while the web is diminishing the power of the newspapers and news magazines.

The facts are that the more conservative and traditionalist outlets are becoming more successful while the old line that continues to try to sell buggy wips is starting to go broke - and they're screaming and doing a lot of finger pointing about it.

As an outsider looking in, would you be surprised to hear that I consider CNN to be right-wing? Worse than that, however, is it's total lack of intelligence. No deep analysis, no questioning, not even a simple blasé reporting of somewhat anti-traditional news. Instead, we get WAR ON TERROR flashed on the screen, and Larry King unsure if he'd rather interview Michael Jackson or Saddam Hussein. It's like the National Enquirer went, well, National. (Since I've only ever seen Fox News Sunday, I will refrain from commenting -- although I would like to add that Bill O'Reilly can kiss my Canadian ass.)

When you're talking with non-Americans about American media bias, this is what you're most likely to hear -- how American reporting is all about 'sound bites' and 'dumbing it down' and 'dramatisations.' The fact that more and more small news outlets are being absorbed by the big whigs means that less and less news is able to represent the marginalised topics of the day (regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum.)

Independent media needs to be defended.
