The military occupations in Afghanistan and Iraq may last years. And the active-duty Army, the service that bears the brunt of occupation duty, has been shrinking for years.

It totals about 480,000 full-time soldiers now, down from more than 750,000 in the late 1980s. About half of the Army's 33 active-duty combat brigades are now in Iraq. That means the Pentagon must increasingly rely on the more than 500,000 soldiers in the Army Reserve and Army National Guard.

Also complicating relief for part-time forces, many of the soldiers with special training needed for military occupation, such as civil affairs, utilities and military police, are concentrated in Guard and reserve units.

Heaven forbid a Republican might say something critical of the "President".

Now Bush did not see the 911 coming how the hell would Clinton know we were going to attack a country and hold occupation because of 911. You really think we need to pour more money into defense !

codeworks, they can't stand it because Bush is not only screwing up at home (the economy), but the longer things go like this in Iraq the worse he looks. Blaming Bill Clinton LOL. Yeah we need a couple hundred thousand more troops to send over there to be shot at. Hell, lets just maks Iraq the 51st state and we can send Bush2 over there to be the Governor. After next year he'll probably need a job.

First off, we have TOO MANY soldiers and spend about 1500% too much on defence already.

However, just to enterain your backwards thinking (ahem .. blaming) ... have you considered that as technology gets better that there would be a logic need for LESS soldiers? Why do you think they did an air assualt on Iraq first? Because they did NOT need 100,000 troops storming each city when a hundred bomber would achieve more.

Funny!
Bush2 gets into a conflict we shouldn't have gotten into, can't get out, soldiers don't want to re-up, people don't want to join the military (hell, the Coast Guard is offering my brother-in-law like 45k to re-up because they can't even get people, 45k after his first tour of 4 years!), we're dumping billions of dollars into this fiasco which obviously has to catch up to us sooner or later, and some how it's all Clinton's fault.

At least we can count on the politics forum for a good laugh every now and again.

I have a bright idea, lets bring all our troops home and sit back and when they hit us just pick up the bodies and rebuild the buildings. Will that really save money? How much did 9-11 cost? The fact of the matter is the US cannot defend all the targets we have, it's impossible. Therefore we must take the fight to the ones that are willing to kill us.

No one ever said this would be easy, it will take several years to win the peace.

Sitting back and waiting till we are hit again is not an option.

KMAN is exactly right Clintoon destroyed the military. We are very lucky our enemies are trapped in the stone age. It's time to pull our troops out of Germany and SK. The last time we talked about doing just that the Germans and SKs cried about the money and jobs they'd lose if the US bases were closed.

Come on how can you say the Clinton destroyed the military. If that were true how did we manage to take Afganistan and Iraq with such ease in less than 18 months. Bush has been president almost 3 years, when does he start to take responsibility for the situation the US is in today?

Wil,
Clearly everything good (should it actually ever occur) is the result of Dumbya, and everything bad is Clinton's fault.

I believe this is in the PATRIOT ACT II. Non believers will be held indefinately without human rights, a lawyer or charges filed against them.

Get with the program.

You libs are going to be bitching about the conservative republican policies for a long time because the "movement" of the American people is to the right. I suggest that you pack your bags and move to another country. A strong foriegn policy guarding our capitalistic principles has been revived. We broke the back of communism with the war against the North Vietnamese, We left russia in the dust with the incredible economy Reagan oversaw and it has come to a period in time where we must be proactive in preventing another 9/11. Nothing wrong with a little preventive medicine.

I just wish Bush would have beaten these islamic bastards up a bit more through the air. We American are just too damn nice to other countries. We finicially support the entire world and these stone age islamic simpletons hate us. There an uneducated, and ignorant people. We will eventually teach them a capitalistic approach to economics and allow them to have the resources needed so that they may reach their own conclusions about faith.

Of course many will not go along as not all are ignorant but some are stupid. Ignorance is curable with knowledge, while stupid is forever. The liberal left falls in the latter category in our own country where people don't take responsibility for their own actions and feel that they have a right to everything, rather than a privilage.

I rememnber Slick Willy's first major plan once he was elected. To allow faggots in the military. Soldiers never respected the rapist. The founding fathers of this country must have been rolling in their graves when this man was president the first two years. Thank God for Newt. The republican got beat up a bit for the next few years as the left was able to convice the ignorant that Newt was a very evil, uncompassionate man.

Yeah Slickster - kick back and relish in the false economy that you were fortunate to have you first seven years.

Wilm,
The enemy is militarily insignificant is why. Come on you know that. Clintoon cut the troops in half and built very few new ships and armor. The US would be in bad shape if the enemy was up for a true fight.

Grant,
Saddam was the head of the snake, the toughest in the mid east and he had to go. The Saudis are the money behind the operations that's no secret and they should be dealt with soon.

Wilm,
Bush has been a disapointment to me, he gives the libs what they want and thinks they're going to like him. Bush needs to sack up and have some balls.

15 BILLION to Africa for aids is a waste of money. I doubt it will help, more Africans will get aids because of it. And the Koffis of the world will steal most of it anyway.

Bush stopped the war operations in Iraq too soon. The US will still win in Iraq, but I don't like the cost in US soldiers. Major operations should have continued for 2 more months and it would be over, however the PC war won the day.

We were told in the beginning that this would take no time at all.

Another thing: how do you "win peace"?

Radio, who said this? Please find me a quote of a top government official who said this would be quick and easy, because I am not familiar with any, so please enlighten me.
