TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson wants to expand the CFB Playoffs to 6 games, and wants to eliminate the Conference Championship games. He wants the five "Conference Champions" to automatically get a spot in the playoffs, plus one other team. This ridiculous plan is just another chapter in the Big 12's desperate attempt to automatially get into the playoffs without changing their rules and playing on a level field with the other four Super Conferences. I guess Patterson does not realize that his team did NOT win the Big 12 title last season.

The stupidity of this idea is self apparent. Alabama and Georgia win the SEC West, and East, respectively. Both teams have identical records and did not play each other. Who is the SEC Champ? Instead of deciding this on the field, Patterson wants to resort to a bunch of "tie-breaker" rules to decide things.

The Big 12 had better learn that when it comes to having a say in how the Committee operates, they are #5 in importance. The Conferences that have CC games will always have a leg up on the Big 12. The more that Big 12 Head Coaches whine about this, the worse it will get for the Big 12. If two teams have identical loss records, the team that won their CC game is always going to prevail over the team that did not play in a game. All doubt of that was removed last season when Ohio State, the team that Big 12 fans said did not belong in the playoff, won it all. Patterson really should think before he runs his mouth unless he is trying to compete with Art Briles.

BD, I'm thinking you are being a little tough on Coach Patterson. Put yourself in his position...with the Frogs not exactly being a nationally known program like...........many traditional programs.

I admire the guy for standing up for his players and school...he had a damn good team looking at the total picture.
He's a damn good coach who has proven a "lesser" Texas team can compete with the big boys.

I like and respect this ole coach.............

Clover, you WIN to get in. You do not change the rules so you have an advantage by NOT playing in a CC game. The Big 12 is famous for trying to bend the rules in their favor, knowing that they cannot compete on a national level year after year. Their two glamor schools, Oklahoma and Texas, have crashed and burned on the football field. When this happens to other conferences, other schools jump in and fill the void. Schools like Oregon and Auburn, can do this because they win CC games. Without a CC game to put a smaller known school in the spotlight, there can be no Oregon's or Auburns in the Big 12.

CL, disagree w/ you here. The B12 needs to conform, not the other way around. The playoff needs to go to 8 teams, not 6. THAT is a stupid idea (6 teams).

The B12 needs to admit they fucked up, add 2 more teams, and get with the program.

I totally agree. The Big 12 has been fucking up for years. It is about time they pay the piper.

Meh... Patterson's ideas aren't any dumber than having 4 playoff slots for 5 Power-5 conferences. They need to expand it to at least 6 teams, and even better 8 to avoid the first round byes. Nobody should get a free ride in the first round with such a small field of teams. If they had byes in place this season, Oregon and Bama would have gotten a bye. And we saw how that turned out...

If they expand to 6 teams, the Big 12 is getting a free ride. Unless they expand to 8 teams (which will NOT happen in the near future) the Big 12 either expands to 12 teams and holds a CC game or sits at the #5 position going in, knowing that if all else is equal, they are the first conference out, just like I told everyone last season. It happened then, and with great results. Baylor lost and the team that Baylor wanted to replace won it all.

You don't know what will happen in the near future. They can break contracts and have it to 8 teams next year if they wanted to. With 8 teams it would also be a HUGE moneymaker for the NCAA. It's what they should have done in the first place, which I also said last year before the playoffs, because I knew there would be some controversy over it.. Before you start selling the Big 12 short, if they had just 6 teams in this first playoff the Big 12 would have had more teams in the playoff than any other conference. Just wait until the Big 12 puts an undefeated team in and one of these other Power 5 conferences get left out of the playoff. Then watch how fast they scramble to change it..

That's exactly why there won't be any change to the Conference Championship Games.....they're a huge money maker for the conferences. And is another reason why the B12 just doesn't get it..... Imagine the revenue each school is losing. Each school could likely fund a couple of woman's sports programs just off the revenue from the game. The B12 has very poor leadership. I'd fire the Commissioner asap!

Each Power 5 conference champion gets in plus one team selected from one of the lesser conferences.

More interest and more money. The money is going to be there at 4, 6, 8 or 12 teams.

Over 24 million tv viewers watch each of the playoff games...that won't change.

Coach, I don't think they should change the conference CG games either. It's a good format for crowning a true conference champion. And I agree with everybody here who says the Big 12 execs just don't get it. I even agree with BigDaddy, who brings this up in every RX thread as often as a 6 year old tells knock knock jokes. But lets say the Big 12 gets a Championship Game. It still doesn't solve the problem that is still there under this new format. College football is the only format in all of college sports that doesn't give every conference champion a chance to win the national championship. This would all be solved by adding just 2 more teams, although 4 more would be even better. This is what I hate about this country. It isn't very progressive when it comes to making changes. Everything is done in baby steps. As for Big 12 expansion, time could be running out. To me, there are only 3 options. BYU, Cincinnati and UCF. There's no way the conference is going to grab any team from another Power 5 conference. And if the ACC or the Big 10 ever decide to go to 16 teams, it will leave the Big 12 completely out in the cold. I don't like it, but I'm just a spectator who bitches a lot. I wish OU had gone to the Pac-12 or SEC. But that ship has sailed too. The problem is you can't just dismiss the Big 12 either. They have a bowl contract with the SEC, and are 2-0 against the SEC in that bowl. And their 5th place team beat the Pac-12 runner up a couple years ago in the Holiday Bowl. So it's hard to just write us off when we are still obviously a competitive conference.

GS, I don't think anyone is "dismissing" the B12....it just seems like there's a push for them to conform.

I still see the "Power 5" becoming 4 conferences (of 16 teams). Not sure how long that would take, as the B12 seems to be the group that's going to lose out. The ACC jumped the gun on the B12 and now the B12 has been caught w/ their pants down.

I'm not sure who the B12 could add. Of course, the teams from non-P5 conferences make the most sense. I can't see UCF joining unless they are given some sort of travel incentive (the cost to travel out there will kill their small programs budgets). W/ WVU in the conference maybe add Marshall? But WVU probably doesn't want that, as they like to treat Marshall as the step-child. Memphis is an option and so is Tulsa and Houston. Honestly, they just need to find 2 teams and they're set.

The B12 deserved that 4th spot last year. They got robbed. How often are they willing to let that happen?

(and I'm totally against a 6 team playoff. It makes no sense. It's 8 teams or stay at 4).

Coach, I believe if the Big 12 really wanted UCF there would be plenty of travel incentives. The problem in adding teams is more of a complicated issue than people think. They aren't going to water down the conference by going out and getting a bunch of teams who are lucky to fill 25,000-30,000 seats each week. It doesn't do anything for the SOS or the monetary value of the conference as far as bringing in extra income when they split the pie 12 ways. Some teams have already been shot down. A couple of the university presidents who are a little too light in the loafers and don't care about football wanted Rice and Tulane because of their academics. Rice was quickly shot down, but Tulane took a little longer until they came to their senses.

Browsley has already publicly said that if expansion was to be considered at some point, they would likely look east and not west. Presumably that would put schools like UCF, USF, Cincinnati, Memphis and UConn more in play and perhaps would rule out western candidates like BYU and Boise. Which i think is the best way to go since the Big 12 already has WV on the east coast. They have to be mindful of their situation because if they took somebody that was on the far west coast it would certainly do a disservice to West Virginia. Plus we've seen in the past with the WAC that a conference with so many far outposts to travel doesn't work well. It doesn't make for a cohesive conference when there is so much travel at stake.

The problem with this whole thing is this is the bed the Big 12 powers have decided to lay in, and I don't believe they have any intent on changing it unless they are somehow backed against the wall. When they asked Bowlsby point blank if UCF was on the Big 12 radar since they have the second largest enrollment in the country and their win over the Big 12 Champion in the Fiesta Bowl, Bowsby said "we don't have any schools on our radar at the present time." Then he went on to talk about the Grant Of Rights blah blah blah and how most institutions are essentially off the table. "We don't have any expansion incentive." Those 6 words pretty much sum it up when it comes to the Big 12 and their thoughts on going to 12 teams.

4 team playoff was just fine. TCU lost to Baylor. They don't let up off the gas pedal in that game they are in the playoff. They could schedule tougher OOC opponents which would help. Crazy thing is if they would have ran the table OSU would have been out. Big drop off between the 5 & 6th team.....imo.

You have a drop off in every sport, but you still let them play the game. How many 13 seeds have upset good teams in March Madness? More than I can count..I think they should always allow for that hot team that makes a run after a slow start, to have their opportunity in the end. Ohio State was a perfect example. In other years their chances of being left out of a Final Four format could have been much greater. Especially if you add another undefeated team to the mix. That's why 6 teams is essential. Eight teams are better because I don't think anybody deserves a bye week in a small field in college football. The NCAA also wouldn't make nearly the revenue off the playoff if their one and two seeds sat out in the first round. It's still all about the money. That's why I think it will drive them to make changes to this format sooner rather than later. Of course a total college football realignment to four 16 team super conferences could also change all of that..

The bottom line is this. Until and unless the Big 12 changes it's policies and gets two more teams, they are always going to be the #5 conference in a 4 conference race. Not only that, if Notre Dame has a great season, you now lose one spot in the playoffs because fair or not, NO ONE is going to deny the Irish a spot in the playoffs with just one loss. Go, I GUARANTEE you that there will be no change in the Playoffs for atleast two more years. GUARANTEED. They will wait for the first cycle to complete before changing anything.

I agree with everything you said, but if the Big 12 gets a team into the 4 team playoff next year then all bets are off for them getting two more teams anytime in the near future.

Sounds like the B12 needs one of theirs to go unbeaten. Is that in the cards? I don't think so.

If OU and/or Texas come back to playing up to their recruiting, I think we could potentially have an undefeated team in the Big 12. TCU came about as close as you can come to being undefeated last year. And Texas is starting to climb the ladder. I think they could be a very tough opponent for any team in the country in a couple of years. OU I'm still clueless about which direction they are heading going into next season. I do like new OC Mike Riley. i also like his philosophy of having a balanced pass to run offense. Riley also likes to run the same plays until they are stopped. Sort of the Bama philosophy. I like that. If the players buy into it like TCU did with their new offense, OU could be pretty lethal. It's the defense that I'm most concerned about. I'll just leave it there. Last time i looked Mike Stoops was still coaching it. I don't have that much confidence (based on their recruiting) that TCU and Baylor can keep it up. But Baylor probably has the better chance of the two to go undefeated because of their very easy cupcake non-con schedules. TCU's non-con schedule gets much tougher after 2015 with having to play a home and home with Arkansas and Ohio State. So I have a lot of respect for that program compared to the direction Baylor is trying to go. But those are two tough opponents for a program that averages around #40 in recruiting every year. TCU will have a serious target on their backs in 2015. And they have to travel to Manhattan, Stillwater, and Norman. It will be extremely hard to run the table next year. Plus I think these defenses will have a little better idea how to play Meachem's offense next year.

Houston apparantly wants in:

http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsport...hair-wants-to-bully-threaten-way-into-big-12/

At least one very powerful person at UH wants to change the conference’s mindset, and wants to do it the way most powerful Texans know how: bully and/or threaten their way into achieving their goals. Or, more specifically, have a very powerful entity bully its way for you.

In a meeting with the editorial board of the Houston Chronicle, Tilman Fertitta, chairman of UH’s Board of Regents, suggested that the Texas state legislature should pressure and/or threaten the Big 12 into giving UH a spot in the conference. And by suggested I mean he just flat-out said it.

“Put pressure on the presidents; say, ‘If you don’t do this, we’re not going to fund you for this,'” Fertitta said of the state legislature’s role in meeting his goal. “It’s just the way it is. That’s the way to do it. …

“Be a big boy, step up and put this school that has almost 50,000 students and is so high-profile, has so many of the top schools in the United States, it’s a tier one university — we belong in the Big 12. We’re a big, major school with an unbelievable history in athletics and academia.”

Another very powerful individual at UH, however, seemed to distance herself from the board chair’s tack.

“I don’t want to go there on that issue,” Renu Khator, UH president and chancellor of the UH system, said at the same meeting.
