He'll be the only returning impact starter on that defense. To be honest I figured it'd be a coinflip. (remember Conan?) He'll be sorely needed. That defense has been gutted with the departure of all the big names there. (we all know who they are). Atleast with USC they can plug and play with the players on that squad.

Very exciting news. I'm pretty sure Marks' gonna stay as well even though he's undecided right now.

Would be better if he left IMO. Hes the only HB on SC that should be getting no PT IMO. The guy is a speed back with no power. Every time he gets hit he falls backwards. I prefer Stafon Johnson and Mcknight to be the only two getting the ball.

When you have and NFL ready body and sit out the season behind guys like Maualuga and Mays, you are lucky to play before any of them decide to leave early. So Mays stays. Glad to see it.

Gutted? That's what they said about USC's defense before the last crop of NFL future starters got there. The good part about this scenario if you are a pure CFB fan is that you can pretty much expect more of the same year after year, whether the guys you watch play for USC stay or leave early. It's no coincidence that USC's defense ended up like it did with all the NFL first rounders starting. So stay tuned. Maualuga will also be back but he'll just be a different guy with a new name.

Bottom line..... expect more of the same, Mays or no Mays... (but I'm glad he's still there.)

Sanchez is in the same boat... he'll be back to claim his Heisman and NC.

ahhhh but remember born, SC's offense is all about match ups. He's just a cog in thier machine. He may fall for 3 or 4 separate carries but he only needs some open space and the right mismatch to take it to the house.

2008
Recieving 6 Catches, 62 yards, 10.3 avg, 1 TD
Rushing 107 Att, 617 yards, 5.8 avg, 8 TD's

Not bad for a RB getting a 1/3 of the action and being the stat leader. Considering this 3 headed backfield is returning next year, it'll be all the more lethal.

A fine write up Conan. And it's got nothing to do with your national champion mention either.

One thing for that defense. The loss of both d-coordinator Nick Holt and defensive line coach Dave Watson are huge blows. But the promotion of firey and mastermind DB's coach Rocky Seto to Dcoordinator and Norton to Asst DCoordinator soften the blow.

We'll see how this pans out. The aformentioned guys who left for Washington were only on the staff for 2 years.

For the sake of anyone who hasn't read this blog about Taylor Mays, it's an interesting read. The kid's stock just went way up in my book.

Ted Miller, ESPN:

USC's two-time All-American safety Taylor Mays, a 2008 Thorpe Award finalist, announced Tuesday that he will return for his 2009 senior season.
Here's what Mays said in a statement released by the school:

"There are a lot more things I want to accomplish as a player, a student and a person, things that I've dreamed about for a long time and that are big goals to me. Returning to USC will help me be the best player I can be and put me in the best position possible for the next level.

"It came down to whether I felt I was ready physically and mentally. I feel there are some more things in my game that I can improve upon, things that would help me take the next step. I didn't want to sell myself short. "Plus, I want to be here for my teammates and provide an example to them as a leader and a player. I love the camaraderie here and the atmosphere. USC is a special place. From all the players I've talked to in the NFL, they say it's a whole different world up there. They enjoyed college more than the NFL. I want to enjoy my last year of fun before it turns into a business. "I'm also on track to graduate this fall and I know that's a big deal to my parents. I'm excited to start working hard toward next season. In fact, I wish I could start playing the 2009 season right now."

Said USC head coach Pete Carroll in the statement: "We're obviously delighted to learn of Taylor's decision. He and his family did a lot of research and made an educated decision. He embodies all the virtues of staying. He wants to do this not only to improve as a player, but he's coming back for his team, for his school and for the fans. We're looking forward to Taylor having another outstanding season in 2009 and furthering his standing as a player and a person. He's one of the most gifted safeties to ever play at USC and he wants to come back and do it one more time."

Mays has started the past three seasons at free safety, recording 180 tackles and four interceptions in his career. He was a consensus All-American first teamer as a junior in 2008 and among three finalists for the Thorpe Award, as he made 53 tackles and a team-best nine deflections while helping the Trojans to a 12-1 record, a seventh consecutive Pac-10 title and a third straight win in the Rose Bowl.

"his Heisman and NC." Are you serious? I would love to get the name of the guy who sells you that weed. That must be some potent shit to make a statement like that. No Heisman and no NC for you unless you go get a Gator Jersey with a number 15 on it!

It's just too bad that the road to the NC doesn't go through USC. (and you know it.) It should so all the pretenders can be exposed once and for all. Lucky break for you that USC's schedule held them back and you guys don't play a real team with a serious winning post-season record. We all know Florida skates by on its looks, but it's schedule is always close to home. When Miami and/or FSU return to power you'll be lucky to play in any major bowl. A streak of good luck never lasts very long.

I guess we're also lucky that we don't have to play the mighty Stanford @ home as 40 pt favorites either or that brutal PAC-10 schedule for that matter. I use to respect your opinions, but when your never willing to give another team credit and assert titles that DON'T belong to your team, you lose all credibility. USC has a soft conference (and yes I am willing to admit that the SEC had a down year, so no need to mention an anomaly of a year), locks down the best talent in one of the top 3 recruiting states (we have to battle with FSU, Miami, and other neighboring schools), yet still can't manage to nut up when it counts. Sorry, Conan, but your almighty Trojans have no (ZERO) excuses for losing as a 40 pt favorite at home, and since you basically claim them as the 33rd NFL team, should never lose to any of the CRAP-10 teams. Your pompous attitude certainly does not mirror USC's success. Wow, you win a lot of the Rose Bowls. Go figure, a BCS game as a HOME GAME.
I am willing to admit that USC is an excellent team; unfortunately, due to your constant bashing of UF, I had to go ahead and make the same argument. I would love for these teams to go home-and-home or even meet on a neutral site in the middle to have it settled on the field. Until this occurs, UF is the Nat'l Champs, not USC! When you want to start giving credit where it's due, then I'll be happy to show the same for your team; until then, keep on hating while we take the hardware. Have a nice day.

Agree, with guys like Jordan Campbell, Luther Brown, Uona Kaveinga, Chris Galippo and Vontaze Burfict(Frosh coming in whose the best LB IMO in H.S. football that I've seen since D.J. Williams.)
