NEW YORK -- NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue says it's unlikely the Saints will play in New Orleans this season after the devastation Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath inflicted on the city.

"At this point you have to proceed on the assumption ... that they may be unable to play in New Orleans at all for the entire season," Tagliabue said Thursday in an interview with CNBC.

"If things evolve in a positive way, then that would be something that we could adjust to. But our assumption is that for planning purposes, we should assume it will be difficult if not impossible to play in New Orleans at all this year."

The Saints will move into a hotel in San Antonio, Texas, this weekend and practice in San Antonio in preparation for their regular-season opener at Carolina Sept. 11. They have spent this week in San Jose, Calif., and played their final exhibition Thursday night in Oakland.

But it still hasn't been decided where they will play their regular-season opener Sept. 18 against the New York Giants or play the rest of their games.
The New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority, which runs Giants Stadium, has offered to host the upcoming Giants-Saints game there. It would likely be played Monday, Sept. 19 because the Jets will play Miami that Sunday at Giants Stadium.
Tagliabue said moving the game to New Jersey was one possibility.

He also said games could be played at another NFL stadium or at a non-NFL stadium. He didn't name any specifically, but the Alamodome in San Antonio seats 65,000 for football, about the same as the Saints' regular home at the Superdome in New Orleans, which was heavily damaged by Katrina.

Tagliabue, who announced on Wednesday that the NFL was donating $1 million to the recovery effort, added that the emphasis should be the total recovery of the region hit by the hurricane. So did Gene Upshaw, the executive director of the NFL Players Association in a statement released on Thursday, although Upshaw did not immediately say what form the union's help would take.

"We want to really emphasize above all that sport is a small part of life," Tagliabue said. "We want to use are visibility and the respect we have with the public and the respect our teams have to support the national recovery program. That's the big thing."

Great Post, W.

Well, it looks like the Saints may play somewhere in Louisiana. Shreveport and Baton Rouge have been some of the cities that have offered interest. LSU director Skip Bertman welcomed the idea. The Saints have hinted that Baton Rouge would be their first Choice. However my gut tells me that Tom Benson who is a San Antonio native will move the Saints for good to him former home town.

Unless he says that SA is the new home of the team, they won't draw 25,000 fans on average. Baton Rouge makes a lot of sense, gets the team relatively close to home and the fans who have at least supported them in the past. I wouldn't be surprised to see the communities rally around the Saints in light of the devastation and give them some fairly good support. Key will be for NFL not to black out games and to not jack up the prices of seats. If they show some goodwill I bet the community shows it back.

Why do some books still have the over/under win total up on the Saints??? It boggles my mind. I see a couple of sites with them still at 7.5 wins. They will not have home field advantage all season even if they play in Baton Rouge. It'll be like a half home field advantage.

I know I started a thread yesterday stating that the Saints would be playing in Baton Rouge. Aparently that fell through. It is now official that the Saints will be playing all home games in SA. This makes perfect since to be truthful. They already had practice facilities for years over there. Tom Benson the owner has many car dealerships over there and its his second home. I also belive that SA is the Saints new permant home. They will never be back in New Orleans. That JMO.

The Saints under Jim Haslet in his 5 years has a winning record on the road and a losing record at home. This is over a 5 year period.

I'd love to see the Saints play their 'home games' in Toronto. Would never happen for logistical and political reasons but they'd get some great Canadian hospitality.

STATEMENT FROM TOM BENSON:

The entire New Orleans Saints organization would like to extend its prayers and best wishes to all of our fans throughout Louisiana and the Gulf South region. We are currently working with the NFL and expect to be in a position shortly to announce the sites for our remaining 2005 home schedule. I have expressed my desire to the NFL to play games in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to the extent circumstances allow.

Saints ticket holders unable to attend home games, wherever played, should also be assured that they will be permitted to request refunds. Specifics of the refund policy will be publicized in the upcoming days.

The New Orleans Saints look forward to the start of the NFL regular season this Sunday and to having the Club be a source of pride and joy in these difficult days. As we move forward together, the Saints look forward to serving as a leader in the rebuilding and revitalization of our great community. Towards this effort, the Saints have established the "New Orleans Saints Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund". Further information for those individuals/companies interested in contributing will be announced shortly.

i am amazed the NFL is basically telling them "you are relocating to LA", they want a team and need a team in that market, now they have one...
