KEY STAT: Palace have kept just four clean sheets in 12 at home

EXPERT VERDICT: Crystal Palace have conceded in eight of 12 home games in all competitions this season and injuries are starting to hit Alan Pardew's side hard ahead of this big London derby against Chelsea. The Blues battled for a point at Old Trafford last time out and could grab another draw at Selhurst Park.

RECOMMENDATION: 1-1 draw

KEY STAT: Everton and Tottenham have the joint most draws in the top flight this season (eight)

EXPERT VERDICT: Everton have a tendency to infuriate their supporters, playing some exhilarating football at times but repeatedly letting points slip through their fingers. It’s tricky to judge whether Roberto Martinez’s men are simply overhyped flat-track bullies or if their carelessness will soon be rectified and the draw looks the best bet against Tottenham.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Rayo have kept one clean sheet in their last 13 La Liga games

EXPERT VERDICT: It’s been a tough Christmas for Rayo supporters after their club was humiliated 10-2 by Real Madrid and then heartbroken by two late goals in a 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid. The Rayo defence is always vulnerable given their attacking approach, while opponents Real Sociedad have only one clean sheet in eight league games themselves.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: None of Seville's seven league wins this season have come away from home

EXPERT VERDICT: Seville are yet to win on the road in La Liga this season but the short trip to Granada offers a great opportunity to break that duck. Their hosts have lost five of their eight home games this term and Seville, who have conceded only once in their last five league matches, should have enough quality to claim a first away victory.

RECOMMENDATION: Seville

KEY STAT: Real Betis have won just one of eight home league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Real Betis have not won in four and they look too short to beat Eibar. The Basque minnows won for the first time in five games against Sporting Gijon on Wednesday and they look value to follow up against a Betis team on the slide, while key players picked up inuries in the midweek defeat at Barcelona.

KEY STAT: Villarreal have won just one of their last five league away games

EXPERT VERDICT: Deportivo’s unbeaten La Liga run now stretches to eight matches after a goalless draw with Getafe on Wednesday and they look capable of shutting out Villarreal. The Yellow Submarine are on a fine run of their own but they have shown their best form at home and the draw looks the best bet at the Riazor.

NHL notebook: Blues activate Berglund
By The Sports Xchange

The St. Louis Blues activated forward Patrik Berglund from injured reserve on Saturday.
Berglund has missed all 40 Blues games this season after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder on Aug. 27. He was expected to be in the lineup when the Blues visited the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
Berglund, 27, tallied 27 points (12 goals, 15 assists) in 77 regular-season games with the Blues last season. The 6-foot-3, 217-pounder had two goals and two assists in six 2015 postseason appearances.

---The Minnesota Wild placed goaltender Darcy Kuemper on injured reserve due to a concussion.
Kuemper did not travel with the Wild on their current four-game road trip. In nine games this season (eight starts), he is 4-0-4 with a 2.12 goals-against average and .926 save percentage. He last played in Minnesota's 2-1 win over Montreal on Dec. 22.
The team also recalled forward Jordan Schroeder from the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League.
Schroeder has one goal in 11 games with Minnesota this season. He has notched 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 20 games with Iowa.

---Forwards Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks, Jaromir Jagr of the Florida Panthers, Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and John Scott of the Arizona Coyotes were elected by fans as captains for the 2016 NHL All-Star Game in Nashville, Tenn.
From Dec. 1 through Jan. 1, fans around the world were able to cast their votes at NHL.com/vote and via a mobile ballot for one player from each of the four divisions, with the top vote-getter for each division earning an All-Star berth as division captain.
Kane finished first among all players in the Central Division, while Jagr, who will turn 44 in February, topped the Atlantic. Ovechkin led the Metropolitan and Scott paced the Pacific. the league announced Saturday.
Kane leads the NHL with 33 assists and 56 points, and is second with 23 goals. Kane's franchise-best 26-game point streak (16 goals, 24 assists) from Oct. 17 to Dec. 13 marked the longest such streak by an American-born player and the longest streak by any NHL player since the 1992-93 season.
The remaining 40 players who will comprise the four All-Star rosters -- consisting of six forwards, three defensemen and two goaltenders per team -- will be determined by the NHL Operations Department and announced Wednesday.
The NHL All-Star Skills Competition will begin at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 30, and the NHL All-Star Game will start at 5 p.m. ET on Sunday, Jan. 31.

---The Boston Bruins assigned forwards Alexander Khokhlachev and Seth Griffith to the Providence Bruins of the AHL.
Boston also recalled defenseman Colin Miller from Providence.

---The Tampa Bay Lightning assigned forward Jonathan Drouin to the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL.
Drouin has played in 19 games for Tampa Bay this season, recording two goals and six assists.

Preview: Stars (27-8) at Islanders (18-13)

Date: January 03, 2016 5:00 PM EDT

The Dallas Stars own the most points in the NHL, thanks in large part to their success on the road. They're having a much tougher time there lately.

The Stars attempt to avoid their longest road losing streak in over a year Sunday night against the New York Islanders.

Dallas (28-8-4) is tied with Los Angeles and San Jose for the most road points in the league at 28. The Stars, though, have dropped three straight road games (0-1-2) and are 1-2-3 in their last six.

They salvaged a point Saturday, erasing a two-goal deficit in the third period before falling 3-2 in overtime at New Jersey in the opener of this three-game trip through the New York metropolitan area.

"You've got to find ways to win when you are down, find ways to get points," coach Lindy Ruff told the team's official website. "We found a point."

Dallas last dropped four games in a row away from home from Nov. 16-Dec. 4, 2014. The team has surrendered 14 goals while losing its last two road meetings with the Islanders, including a 7-5 defeat Oct. 25, 2014.

Jamie Benn failed score in that matchup, and he enters his first visit to Brooklyn looking to snap an eight-game goal drought on the road.

He's scored only six of his NHL-leading 24 goals in away venues. However, he's tallied 13 of his 28 assists outside Dallas.

Patrick Sharp is on the verge of matching his career-high nine-game point streak from Nov. 29-Dec. 18, 2011, when he was with Chicago. He's totaled five goals and six assists in his last eight games.

Sharp has nine points in his last seven meetings with the Islanders (21-13-5).

New York is in search of a bounce-back effort after surrendering the first five goals in Saturday's 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh. Re-establishing their superb play on the penalty kill could be just what the team needs.

The Islanders' penalty kill ranks third in the league with an 86.0-percent success rate. However, the unit has allowed three goals on eight occasions over the last two games after killing a franchise-record 42 straight penalties.

New York gave up two power-play goals and a short-handed tally against the Penguins.

"You're not going to win too many games when you give up two power-play goals and a short-handed goal," coach Jim Capuano told the team's official website. "At even strength shots were 39-33 for us. Special teams were the difference in the game and something we have to be better at."

The Islanders, 1 for 14 on the power play over the last six games, could also use some consistency from John Tavares. The captain's goal Saturday was his second in three games, matching his output over the previous 12.

Tavares has 10 points in eight career meetings with the Stars but none in the last two.

Frans Nielsen, though, got his only career hat trick in the last home matchup with Dallas.

The Islanders are expected to start Thomas Greiss in net for a fifth straight game while Jaroslav Halak nurses an upper-body injury.

Greiss has split the last four games with a 2.86 goals-against average, but he was pulled midway through the second period Saturday after allowing four goals on 26 shots. Christopher Gibson stopped 16 of 17 shots the rest of the way in his NHL debut.

Greiss has a 1.50 GAA while winning two career starts against Dallas.

"He's the hardest working guy that we have," coach Jack Capuano said. "He's going to be right back in for us."

Preview: Wild (20-10) at Panthers (17-12)

Date: January 03, 2016 6:00 PM EDT

After notching a couple more franchise firsts with their latest victory, the Florida Panthers look to record their most successful homestand ever.

The surprise Atlantic Division leaders close out a six-game residency seeking an unprecedented ninth straight win in Sunday's clash with the Minnesota Wild.

A perennial also-ran for most of their 22 seasons of existence, the Panthers (22-12-4) have risen into the NHL's upper tier behind a torrid 14-3-0 stretch. That includes a club-record eight consecutive victories following Saturday's 3-0 win over the New York Rangers that also established a new franchise best of six straight home wins.

The Panthers set the mark hours after announcing a contract extension for coach Gerard Gallant through 2018-19. The move came one day after the team extended general manager Dale Tallon's deal for three years.

'He has done an excellent job of creating a winning culture and developing our young players in his time with the Panthers,' Tallon said of Gallant. 'He is an ideal fit for our group and we look forward to having him lead our team as we work toward our goal of winning the Stanley Cup.'

Florida has reached the postseason only once in the previous 14 seasons and last won a playoff series in 1996. The franchise's previous best homestands of six games or more came in November 1995 - five wins and a tie - and a 6-0-1 span in March 2008.

"The last few games felt like playoff games, and that's the kind you want to play," goaltender Roberto Luongo said. "We want to keep on doing what we're doing."

Luongo has done his part during the unbeaten run, in which the Panthers have yielded a mere 10 goals. The veteran was at his best Saturday, recording a season-high 40 saves to break his own team record with his seventh consecutive win.

The 36-year-old has posted a 1.26 goals-against average and two shutouts during the streak.

Luongo hasn't started games on back-to-back days this season, though Al Montoya has been just as solid when his number's been called. The career backup owns a 5-1-1 record with a 1.79 GAA and .930 save percentage in eight starts and has allowed one goal in each of his last three - all wins.

Montoya also has yielded one goal in each of his four games against Minnesota and won them all. Luongo has lost his last four versus the Wild.

After halting a seven-game losing streak to the Rangers, Florida next faces another longtime nemesis. The Wild are 12-1-2 in the series' past 15 meetings and have won the last three in regulation.

Minnesota (20-10-7) also has received strong goaltending from Devan Dubnyk during a 2-0-1 stretch as he's permitted four goals on 93 shots. On the current four-game road trip, he followed a 33-save effort in Thursday's 3-1 win at St. Louis with 28 in Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss at Tampa Bay.

Jared Spurgeon helped the Wild earn a point by scoring the tying goal with 2:39 left in regulation. Minnesota also had a third-period power-play goal from Ryan Suter overturned when Zach Parise, back from a knee injury that sidelined him against St. Louis, was ruled to have interfered with Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy.

"I think probably if we won the shootout, we might be feeling pretty good about ourselves, so we obviously have to find a way to make sure we're ready to start the game better (Sunday)," coach Mike Yeo said.

Dubnyk has registered a 1.46 GAA in winning all four career starts against Florida, including a 2-1 victory in the most recent matchup Feb. 12.

Preview: Senators (15-14) at Blackhawks (21-13)

Date: January 03, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Chicago Blackhawks have gotten back into a groove after going through a rare scoring slump, but they're still having trouble keeping the puck out of their own net.

That's good news for an Ottawa Senators team in the midst of a rough patch.

Chicago seeks its sixth victory in eight tries Sunday night by dealing Ottawa its first seven-game road losing streak in over six years.

The Blackhawks (22-13-4) fell 4-0 to Western Conference-leading Dallas on Dec. 22 and returned from the holiday break with a 2-1 home loss to Carolina last Sunday, scoring only a meaningless goal with less than three seconds remaining.

They were much better in back-to-back road victories, beating Arizona 7-5 on Tuesday and Colorado 4-3 on Thursday, with Jonathan Toews scoring in overtime on New Year's Eve.

Toews' goal came on the power play, improving Chicago to 5 for 10 with the man advantage in those wins. It went 1 for 11 on the power play over the previous six.

Patrick Kane also had a goal and two assists in each contest and leads the NHL with 56 points.

"I thought we played great," coach Joel Quenneville said. "We gave up some stuff, but I thought we did some good things and generated some dangerous opportunities. We were much better."

The problem is that the Blackhawks had trouble putting both games away. They led Arizona by four in the third period before the Coyotes made it interesting with three in the final 20 minutes, and the Avalanche rallied from a two-goal hole to send it to OT.

Corey Crawford was in net for all five goals Tuesday before Scott Darling looked shaky at times Thursday.

"They get back in the game and you don't have a comfortable feeling," Quenneville said.

Chicago was the team rallying in the first meeting with Ottawa on Dec. 3. Mike Hoffman and Bobby Ryan scored in the first period before Kane and rookie Artemi Panarin tied it in the second.

Hoffman scored in overtime to give the Senators (18-14-6) as 4-3 victory in that contest and also added an assist, while Erik Karlsson chipped in three assists.

Ottawa could use another solid offensive performance after it fell 3-0 to New Jersey on Wednesday for its first shutout since a 2-0 loss to Pittsburgh on Oct. 15. It outshot the Devils 28-11 over the final two periods.

"It's tough, but I thought we played a pretty decent game," said forward Mark Stone, who scored in the first meeting with Chicago. "We got a lot of pucks to the net, but we didn't get a lot of traffic to the net. Their goalie didn't have to make enough high-quality saves."

The Senators have dropped four of five overall and are 0-5-1 on the road since Dec. 10, getting outscored 22-9 in that stretch. They haven't lost seven straight on the road since Oct. 29-Dec. 5, 2009.

Ottawa has lost all six trips to United Center since last winning there March 28, 2001. The Senators likely will have former Blackhawk and Chicago-area native Craig Anderson in net as they look to end that drought.

Anderson stopped 77 of 79 shots in his previous two starts before giving up each goal in a 7-3 loss to Boston on Tuesday. He made 35 saves in the first meeting but has a 3.11 goals-against average in five career starts in his hometown.

Crawford made 23 stops in the first matchup and is 2-0-1 in his career against the Senators.

Preview: Jets (18-18) at Ducks (14-15)

Date: January 03, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

John Gibson's superb play has the Anaheim Ducks in good spirits for their longest homestand of the season.

They'll begin this important eight-game stretch Sunday night against one of the NHL's poorer road teams, the Winnipeg Jets, as Gibson vies for a third consecutive shutout.

Despite winning three of four and earning a point in five straight, Anaheim (15-15-7) still returns home 13th in the Western Conference with 37 points. The Ducks have an opportunity to gain ground with five conference foes set to visit the Honda Center, where they're 9-5-4 this season and 3-1-0 in their last four.

"We can make a big step here by winning a lot of games at home," coach Bruce Boudreau said.

The defending Pacific Division champions come back optimistic after going 2-0-1 on a road trip in which they yielded only three goals. Gibson set the tone by making 14 saves in Tuesday's 1-0 win at Calgary and followed with 21 in another 1-0 victory over Edmonton on Thursday.

Since being promoted from the AHL on Nov. 24, Gibson has recorded a league-best 1.68 goals-against average and four shutouts in 14 appearances. He's expected to play after Frederik Andersen worked Friday's 2-1 shootout loss at Vancouver.

The Ducks have needed Gibson to be great, they scored just three goals on their trip and have netted a league-low 68 overall.

"Hopefully we can score some more goals and give our goalies some help. They've been playing great," forward Andrew Cogliano said.

The Ducks' slumping offense took another hit when Cam Fowler injured his knee last Sunday against Philadelphia. The defenseman and power-play quarterback will miss at least three additional weeks with a Grade 2 sprain.

Scoring wasn't an issue in Anaheim's matchups with Winnipeg (18-18-2) last season. The Ducks amassed 12 goals in winning all three regular-season meetings and 16 in sweeping the Jets in the West quarterfinals. They've won eight straight against Winnipeg including the playoffs.

Ryan Kesler had three goals and two assists in the playoff series, but the one-time 41-goal scorer posted only his fifth in 37 games this season in Friday's defeat.

The Jets enter on a high note after Saturday's 4-1 win in San Jose ended a six-game road skid. They opened this season-high five-game trek with Thursday's 4-2 loss to Arizona after winning two straight at home.

Drew Stafford had a short-handed goal and Mathieu Perreault scored on the power play to back Connor Hellebuyck's 27 saves and boost a special teams unit that's been among the league's worst. Winnipeg ranks 29th on the power play at 14.4 percent and is 1 for 21 over its last seven on the road, where its dropped 11 of 13 and is 7-13-1 overall.

The Jets have surrendered a power-play goal in eight of 10 games, killing just 71.8 percent of short-handed situations over that span. They were 4 for 5 against the Sharks.

"We talked a lot about discipline and we did a better job of staying out of the box and getting the kills when we needed," Perreault said.

Hellebuyck has started 11 of the last 13 games, meaning the struggling Michael Hutchinson could get the nod Sunday. Hutchinson has posted a 3.79 GAA in losing seven consecutive starts, allowing at least three goals in six.

Grand Salami - January

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Preview: Hawks (21-13) at Knicks (15-19)

Date: January 03, 2016 3:30 PM EDT

While the Atlanta Hawks have survived a slump from their best outside shooter, the New York Knicks hope their own scoring woes are close to dying off.

Kyle Korver will continue to search for his touch when the Hawks visit the ice-cold Knicks on Sunday in the second of three meetings in nine days.

Atlanta (21-13) will close its four-game series with New York (15-19) at Philips Arena on Tuesday night to conclude this home-and-home set.

The Hawks have won five of six meetings, including a 112-101 win at Madison Square Garden in late October and a 117-98 home victory Dec. 26.

The most recent was the last of six straight victories for the Hawks, whose streak ended with Monday's 93-87 loss at Indiana before they erased a 19-point deficit in a 121-115 win at Houston a night later.

Atlanta made 14 3-pointers against the Rockets even with 10 misses from Korver in his first career game without a 3 while attempting more than eight. Including his 0-for-8 night against Indiana, he's now gone two straight games without a 3-pointer for the first time since a four-game slump Jan. 13-17, 2012.

"Kyle was instrumental in letting us know to stay strong, keep playing and not get discouraged, and I honestly think that's what put us over the top," said Al Horford, who finished with season highs of 30 points and 14 rebounds. "I'll give him 10 more 3s, and I'll live with every one of them because he's our best option."

Korver is stuck in a 2-for-26 funk from long range in the last four, dropping his 3-point percentage to a career-low 36.4 one year after leading the league at 49.2.

He averaged 21.0 points while making 13 of 27 from downtown in three games against the Knicks during last season's All-Star campaign but has scored just 18 while making 4 of 10 from deep in this season's first two meetings - including three points Dec. 26.

Despite an overall cold night against the Pacers and Korver's struggles, the Hawks have shot 49.0 percent and averaged 109.6 points over their last eight. The stretch follows three straight losses in which they posted marks of 40.5 and 86.7.

They used a well-rounded effort against Houston with Kent Bazemore scoring 26 - more than his previous three games combined - while Paul Millsap and Jeff Teague each added 22. Millsap also had 13 rebounds, five blocks and four assists, while Teague had eight assists and three steals.

New York has experienced its own slump while losing five of six. The Knicks rebounded from a miserable start to erase a 17-point deficit at Chicago on Friday, but the finish was even worse in the 108-81 loss. They missed 17 of their final 19 shots for eight points in the final 12 minutes - the lowest fourth-quarter total in team history.

"It was just extremely frustrating to miss all those shots," rookie Kristaps Porzingis said. "And that just, missing those shots, I think our energy got a little low, and we just couldn't get good defensive stops."

After winning four straight behind 108.3 points per game in mid-December, New York is averaging 93.5 in its last six. The Knicks have finished at less than 40 percent shooting in three of those games.

Carmelo Anthony has still posted 22.8 points and 8.8 rebounds in four games since returning from a sprained right ankle that kept him out for one contest. Anthony has averaged 30.3 points in his last 12 against the Hawks, though he managed just 18 with 12 boards in the last matchup.

Preview: Bulls (19-12) at Raptors (21-13)

Date: January 03, 2016 3:30 PM EDT

Lengthy stretches against East opponents might help the Chicago Bulls and Toronto Raptors see their places more clearly in the conference, and a second matchup within a week between the two provides a good start.

The Bulls seek their seventh straight win in the series and second in six days when they visit the Raptors on Sunday.

Chicago (19-12) began its three-game overall win streak with Monday's 104-97 victory over Toronto before an overtime win over Indiana and a rout of New York gave the club a perfect 3-0 homestand.

The final two wins came without point guard Derrick Rose, who will travel with the team to Toronto but is iffy to return from right hamstring tendinitis. Rose, who has averaged 14.4 points in 27 games, scored 20 against the Raptors on Monday.

The Bulls have also played without All-Star Joakim Noah for five games, but he could be cleared to return from a shoulder injury this week.

Chicago has started to roll without the pair early on during a 10-game stretch against East opponents. The Bulls, however, are 10-8 within the conference largely because they've gone 2-5 against those opponents away from home.

While 13-year veteran Kirk Hinrich has started in place of Rose, rookie Bobby Portis has seen a huge uptick in minutes during Noah's absence.

Portis has scored in double figures in three straight games and finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds in Friday's 108-81 victory over the Knicks. It was his second double-double in a two-week span after playing in just four of Chicago's first 24 games.

"Not trying to go out there and score or rebound," Portis said. "Just trying to go out there and just play my role and bring positive energy."

Portis is averaging 11.3 points and 6.9 rebounds in his last seven games, and coach Fred Hoiberg said he has earned a spot in the rotation even when Noah returns.

"We're going to continue to find minutes for Bobby," Hoiberg said. "There is no doubt about it. He's playing too well."

Portis had 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting and nine rebounds versus Toronto. The first-round pick in June helped Chicago's bench outscore the Raptors' reserves 51-27.

Toronto (21-13) will play its fifth during a 13-game stretch against the East. The Raptors improved to 13-6 and 7-1 at home against in-conference opponents with Friday's 104-94 win over Charlotte.

Although it was their fourth win in five games, coach Dwane Casey wasn't entirely happy with an offense that limped through a third straight sub-par shooting game. Toronto has shot 37.0 percent over its last two after a 43.2 mark in Chicago.

"I'd love to shoot 45, 47, 48 (percent), but right now we're kind of discombobulated offensively," Casey said. "And we'll get there, but it's going to take a little time, it's a little bumpy right now."

The Raptors, who have won seven of eight at home, survived against the Hornets by matching a season high with 15 3-pointers on 33 attempts. Toronto won its 14th straight game when holding opponents to fewer than 100 points and is 19-3 in such games.

Kyle Lowry scored 28 points in the first matchup against Chicago, and he has averaged 31.0 points on 56.8 percent shooting in his last two against the Bulls.

Preview: Heat (19-13) at Wizards (15-16)

Date: January 03, 2016 6:00 PM EDT

The Miami Heat haven't had an answer for John Wall in recent meetings with Washington. Considering how well the Wizards point guard is playing lately, a good portion of the entire NBA doesn't seem to have one, either.

Enjoying one of the finest stretches of his career, Wall looks to lead the Wizards back to .500 with their sixth win in eight games Sunday when they host the Heat.

After finishing with 24 points and 13 assists to lead Washington (15-16) past Orlando 103-91 on Friday, Wall has posted 11 or more assists in eight straight games - the only NBA player to do it this season. He's also averaging 20.1 points in that span.

The surge has bumped his season assists average to 9.9, which is second to league-leading Rajon Rondo. Wall even sent Rondo a message Dec. 21 when he dished out a career-best 19 in a 113-99 win over Sacramento. Rondo had nine assists for the Kings.

Wall has also been taking care of the ball a bit better in the last eight despite two games in which he had six or more turnovers. Take those two games away and his assist-to-turnover ratio is 3.38 after it was 2.08 entering his streak.

It's an important improvement for the aggressive guard since his 4.4 miscues per game this season are a career worst, but his last four against Miami (19-13) - all wins - have been anything but sloppy with six total turnovers. Coupled with 42 assists, Wall has a 7.00 assist-to-turnover ratio during his team's win streak against the Heat.

He also shot better than 60.0 percent in three of those four games, and although he struggled in the other in March with six points on 2-of-7 shooting, he had 12 assists with no giveaways, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Wall shot 9 of 12 and scored 26 with seven assists in a 114-103 victory at Miami on Dec. 7 that was part of a 3-6 stretch in which Washington allowed 109.6 points per game. The Wizards have since tightened things up with an average of 97.1 in the last seven.

"Whenever we defend at a high level, we force turnovers, we get ourselves easy baskets early on," Wall told the team's official website. "We've got to understand that we've got to play defense. We've got to find a way to keep our defense up with our offense, and we have been doing that."

Washington's D has been strong during the win streak over Miami with an average of 97.3 points allowed, although Dwyane Wade has still gotten his points with 24.7 per game while playing in three of them. The biggest factor may be that Chris Bosh suited up for only two since the center shot a combined 14 of 25 for 39 points when he did play.

The Heat and their second-ranked defense - which allows 95.1 points per game - have a simple task: hold the Wizards under 100. Washington's four losses since Dec. 12 are the only occasions in that time when the club failed to hit the century mark.

Miami quieted a Dallas offense that had averaged 113.5 during a four-game win streak with a 106-82 rout of the Mavericks on Friday. Hassan Whiteside had 25 points and 19 rebounds, Gerald Green added 19 and Bosh had 16 while Wade overcame flu-like symptoms to chip in 10 points and seven assists in 19 minutes.

"You want to be tested," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "You want to be measured in this league. You want to be pushed to adversity."

The Wizards have never won five straight in this series.

Preview: Trail Blazers (14-21) at Nuggets (12-22)

Date: January 03, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

C.J. McCollum has been picking up the scoring slack for the Portland Trail Blazers with Damian Lillard injured. He may not have to do it any longer.

Lillard reportedly might be back to ease the load on McCollum on Sunday night when the Trail Blazers try to continue their recent success over the Denver Nuggets, who might be without Kenneth Faried.

Lillard played in every game through his first three seasons, and solidified himself as the face of the Trail Blazers (14-21) in 2015-16, averaging career highs of 24.6 points and 6.8 assists following the offseason departure of LaMarcus Aldridge to San Antonio.

However, he's been hurt for the first time since being selected sixth overall out of Weber State in 2012, missing the last six games with plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

Portland has split those games thanks in large part to McCollum. The guard is averaging 32.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists while hitting 53.4 percent from the floor - 12 of 26 from beyond the arc - over the past three games.

McCollum could've used some help in Thursday's 109-96 loss at Utah. He poured in 32 points with seven boards and six assists, while only Meyers Leonard and Allen Crabbe scored in double digits at 17 and 15, respectively.

"Defensively, we didn't do a good job pressuring the ball enough," McCollum said. "I think they were too comfortable, and that led to some easy baskets. Once a team gets comfortable, they begin to make more shots and begin to get excited on defense and then use that as momentum. I think that they were too comfortable."

That was the case for the Blazers on Wednesday, beating the Nuggets 110-103 at home while shooting 47.1 percent. McCollum connected on 12 of 19 shots to finish with 29 points.

Crabbe chipped in 20, and he's averaging 17.0 points in six games filling in for Lillard.

Lillard has 26.3 points per game while making 13 of 29 from long range over the last four matchups in Denver (12-22).

Portland has won nine of its last 10 meetings with the Nuggets, but the Northwest Division rivals have split two this season with each team winning on its home court.

Denver has lost five straight and eight of its last nine. The Nuggets put a scare into NBA-leading Golden State on the road Saturday, erasing a 26-point deficit before eventually losing 111-108 in overtime.

The Nuggets may have suffered a greater blow afterwords when Faried was taken to a hospital after leaving on a stretcher with a neck brace to stabilize him. The team claimed it was precautionary after he took an elbow to the back of the neck while jostling for a rebound late in overtime. He immediately reached to rub his neck but did not appear seriously injured. Faried had feeling in his hands and feet.

"Obviously any time you're dealing with a neck or back, it's scary," guard Jameer Nelson said. "I didn't see the play. We were playing. There are no dirty guys out there. Nobody did anything intentional. Hopefully he's good."

Faried leads the team with 9.0 rebounds per game, while his 12.6 points rank third.

Danilo Gallinari is looking to build on his 24 points from Saturday after missing six games with a left ankle sprain. The forward, though, has totaled 29 while missing 22 of 29 from the field - 12 of 14 from 3-point range - over his last four meetings with Portland.

Will Barton scored 31 at Portland on Wednesday and followed that with 21, 13 rebounds and seven assists against the Warriors.

Preview: Suns (12-24) at Lakers (7-27)

Date: January 03, 2016 9:30 PM EDT

During a disastrous six-week stretch filled with low points, the Phoenix Suns may have hit rock bottom.

Losers of eight straight and coming off their worst defensive performance in 25 years, the crumbling Suns try to salvage the finale of a forgettable road trip Sunday night against a Los Angeles Lakers team riding a rare high.

The Suns' longest losing streak since a 10-game skid March 20-April 8, 2013, has been a running soap opera. Disgruntled forward Marcus Morris was suspended two games for tossing a towel at coach Jeff Hornacek on Dec. 23 at Denver, and leading scorer Eric Bledsoe suffered a season-ending knee injury three days later in a home loss to league-worst Philadelphia that prompted the firing of assistants Mike Longabardi and Jerry Sichting.

Phoenix (12-24) is nearing closer to Los Angeles (7-27) at the bottom of the Western Conference, a far cry from where it appeared to be headed following a 120-101 home victory over the Lakers on Nov. 16. The Suns are 6-19 since and have allowed opponents to score 109.3 points per game and shoot 48.6 percent, both league worsts in that span.

They were far worse than those dubious standards Saturday in Sacramento, where the sub-.500 Kings shot 60.9 percent en route to a 142-119 rout. It's the most points Phoenix has surrendered in a non-overtime game since a 155-127 defeat to the Michael Jordan-era Chicago Bulls on Dec. 4, 1990.

The Suns permitted 83 points in the second half, with most of the damage coming after center Tyson Chandler was ejected for arguing a foul midway through the third quarter.

'We have to continue to play no matter what happens throughout the game," guard Brandon Knight said. 'In the third quarter we stopped getting stops."

Opponents have gone 56.8 percent from the field during Phoenix's three losses on the trip.

In contrast, Los Angeles began the new year with one of its best defensive efforts. The Lakers yielded their fewest points this season and limited Philadelphia to 36.9 percent shooting in Friday's 93-84 victory, giving the conference cellar-dwellers consecutive wins for the first time since a three-game run last February.

'We're starting to play off each other, and guys are just being comfortable in their own skin,' guard Lou Williams said. 'These past few games we've played with a lot of confidence and played at a better pace."

Friday's result was achieved with Kobe Bryant sidelined by a sore right shoulder that has the retiring superstar questionable for this game. Williams helped fill the void by matching a season high with 24 points - 12 in the fourth quarter.

Jordan Clarkson added 19 points after recording 24 in Wednesday's 112-104 win at Boston.

Phoenix has lost six straight and nine of 11 on the road but has had a few bright spots on this trip. Second-year forward T.J. Warren followed a career-high 29 points in Thursday's loss at Oklahoma City with 19 against the Kings, rookie Devin Booker had a season-high 21 on Saturday and Knight broke out of a shooting slump to hit 9 of 17 for 23 points.

Knight, who shot 33.8 percent over his previous four, notched his only career triple-double with 30 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds in the Nov. 16 win, the Suns' fifth straight over the Lakers and ninth in 10 matchups.
