Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Tampa Bay Rays at Seatte Mariners (+120, 8.5)

The key to Seattle’s success the rest of the way is pitching. And few teams throw the ball as well at home as the Mariners.

Seattle has the ninth-best home ERA in baseball (3.77). Safeco Field has been a house of horrors for opposing lineups this season. The Mariners have won three straight at home and will start young hurler Ryan Rowland-Smith on Sunday, a player Tampa Bay has yet to face this year.

The Rays also hit six points lower on the road (.260) than at home, and are just 24-31 away from Tropicana Field this year. Overall, the Rays have dropped five of their past eight on the road.

Seattle has a long way to go to get back in the playoff race, but should take advantage of an opportunity to damage Tampa Bay’s postseason hopes.

Pick: Mariners

Chicago Cubs at Colorado Rockies (+106, 9.5)

One of baseball’s best kept secrets is that the Cubs are one of the worst road hitting teams in the majors.

Chicago is batting a pathetic .237 away from Wrigley Field this year. The team is in the bottom third in the league in road doubles (92) and is in the middle of the pack in away home runs (57). The lone reason the team doesn’t struggle more on the road than its 24-31 record would indicate, is its pitching.

The Cubs have the third-best road ERA (3.84) in the majors. But don’t tell that to the Rockies, who have been raking at home ever since Coors Field was first built in Denver a mile above sea level. Colorado is doing it the same way it has always done it, with power. The Rockies have smacked 67 home runs and 110 doubles in their own back yard.

Pick: Rockies

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Wandy Rodriguez (Houston Astros)

The left-hander took just a handful of days to recover from a pulled hamstring. And that’s bad news for opposing hitters.

Rodriguez (10-6, 2.63 ERA) is fifth in the National League in ERA and ninth in strikeouts (128). He has been the most reliable pitcher this year for Houston and is in the midst of one of his biggest runs of the season. Over his past six starts he has allowed just four earned runs – a span of 40 innings.

In his most recent outing, he was lifted with a tweaked hamstring after four innings of one-hit ball against the Cardinals. But don’t look for him to labor against Milwaukee on Sunday. In his other start against the Brewers this year, he gave up only one run over seven innings while striking out five.

"When you see him have the fastball command, you know he has a chance to have a really good game," Astros manager Cecil Cooper told reporters. "And when he can throw in the curveball, which I think is one of the better curveballs in the league, when he can get that over, he's almost unhittable."

John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels)

This right-hander has been absolutely heavenly for the Angels over his past five starts.

Lackey (7-4, 3.96 ERA) has won five of his past six decisions and has regained his status as the ace of the Angels staff. During his past five starts, he has posted a record of 4-0 with a 1.86 ERA and 30 strikeouts. In each of those games, he also completed at least seven innings.

In his most recent outing against the White Sox, he allowed just three earned runs over eight innings as he struck out seven.

“I felt like I was in command of all of my pitches," Lackey told the Associated Press after a recent start. "I feel like my strength, stamina and command are all coming together."

Slumping

Luke Hochevar (Kansas City Royals)

The 25-year-old has no problem throwing strikes. His problem is not letting opposing hitters smack those pitches into outfield gaps.

Hochevar (6-4, 5.40 ERA) has given up 11 earned runs on 18 hits in his past 11 innings. But the young righty has cut down on his walks. In his past four starts, he's collected 34 strikeouts against just three walks.

But so many pitches around the strike zone has been deadly for the young hurler, whose aggressiveness has gotten him into big trouble.

And sometimes, all the wheels just come off the wagon.

"I wasn't getting my breaking ball over. I really didn't even have a curveball today and my slider was flat," Hochevar said after a recent start. "When that happens, they just eliminate pitches."

Aaron Harang (Cincinnati Reds)

May 25. That’s the last time Aaron Harang won a game.

The right-hander has had one of the worst seasons of his career, stumbling to a record of 5-13 with a 4.52 ERA. Over his past four starts, he has allowed a combined 15 earned runs over 20 1-3 innings. In his most recent outing, a 4-2 loss to the Cubs, he coughed up four runs on six hits over 7 1-3 innings.

"We've tried all kinds of stuff," Harang told reporters. "I really don't know. It's one of those things. Maybe we need to be more aggressive, or maybe we need to throw more pitches in the bullpen. It's one of those things that just happen."

Sunday night baseball: Red Sox at Yankees

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (-107, 9.5)

Boston takes on New York at Yankees Stadium under the Sunday night ESPN lights tonight. That just sounds right.

A pair of southpaws, each looking to crack the 10-win plateau, do battle Sunday when the Red Sox send Jon Lester (9-7 3.79 ERA) up against Andy Pettitte (9-6 4.35 ERA) and the Pinstripes.

Back from the dead

Alex Rodriguez ended his homerless streak at 71 at-bats, his longest power drought as a Yankee, when he launched a game-winning two-run shot in Friday’s 2-0 victory over the Red Sox.

Rodriguez is on pace for his worst statistical season yet, but maybe last night’s clutch dinger will spark his performance for the remainder of the year.

V-Mart

The Red Sox wanted catcher Victor Martinez even though he was hitting below .200 in July.

The Boston brass thought they needed an offensive boost. The Sox offered the Indians a good chunk of promising pitchers and as a result were able to add the All-Star to their roster at the trading deadline.

Martinez developed as a youngster in the Cleveland organization, starting out as a shortstop before being switched to a catcher. He also carries a first-basemen’s glove in his apparel bag.

"Now they have another bat, instead of just three guys carrying the lineup," said one well-respected scout.

Martinez should give the Sox the same type of offensive boost they got from Jason Bay last season.

Bay watch

Speaking of Bay, the left fielder has had lingering effects from a hamstring cramp.

He missed the final game of the Baltimore series Sunday, August 2 and the opener of the Tampa Bay matchup Tuesday, August 4. The All-Star was back in the lineup August 5 before re-injuring the hamstring. He didn't play in either of the first two games in this series. His bat is critical in Boston’s quest for the pennant.

Other key BoSox performers injured or sidelined include OF Rocco Baldelli, SS Jed Lowrie and RHP’s Daisuke Matsuzaka and Tim Wakefield.

Penny for your thoughts

Boston has to get more from its starting pitchers if the club has any shot at grabbing a postseason berth.

The last sweep through the rotation saw Brad Penny, John Smoltz, and Clay Buchholz combine for 13 1-3 innings, 24 hits, 20 runs (all earned), 10 walks and 11 strikeouts. The trio also surrendered seven home runs in the process.

Penny, now 7-6, has not lasted seven innings in any of his 21 starts this season, which is the most in the majors. It's also the longest single-season streak by a Red Sox pitcher since 1954.

The Red Sox designated Smoltz for assignment on Friday. The club has 10 days to reassign him to a Minor League affiliate, trade him, or release him.

Go figure

Pettitte picked up his first win since July 1 when he bested Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays, 5-3, in Toronto Tuesday night.

Despite a stellar 40:6 strikeout to walk ratio, Pettitte owns a 5.31 ERA against left-handed hitters this season. On the flip side the big lefty sports a 3.91 ERA against right-handed bats.

He is 1-3 with a 6.36 ERA in his last four team starts versus Boston, but 9-6 at home in his career against the Red Sox.

Lester has defused the Bronx Bombers since being shelled in his MLB debut start against the Pinstripes, going 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA.

Lester has delivered the goods in nine of his last 12 team starts for Boston.

The Yankees play great at home on Sunday (16-2 this season). Conversely, the Red Sox are just 2-7 away on Sundays.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets

San Antonio Silver Stars at Minnesota Lynx (-2.5, 159)

The Silver Stars have a fundamental problem: they only have two consistent scorers.

After MVP candidate Becky Hammon (21.2 ppg, 4.6 apg) and Sophia Young (17.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg), no other player on the roster averages double digits. And even in the lower-scoring WNBA, this is a fatal flaw.

San Antonio has dropped three of four with the team averaging just 74.2 points per game, good for the fourth-worst total in the league. The team also shoots a horrid 41 percent from the floor and 32.5 percent from beyond-the-arc.

Meantime, Minnesota is coming off a win over Connecticut and has so far split the season series at one-game apiece with the Silver Stars.

Minnesota doesn’t play good defense, but should have enough to stifle San Antonio.

Pick: Lynx

Chicago Sky at Detroit Shock (-7, 150.5)

The Sky better have packed their travel bags. After playing the Dream in Atlanta on Saturday night, Chicago must hop a plane to fly back north for an early evening affair in the Motor City.

And the road has been an unkind place for the Sky. They entered the weekend having dropped nine of 11 away from home.

The key for the Shock will be improving their eighth-ranked defense (77.8 ppg), which has been a big reason they've followed a win with a loss four straight times, and won consecutive games only once this season.

"That happens," Detroit center Taj McWilliams told the Associated Press. "Offense happens, but defense is what you make happen. We have to do what we need to do on defense.

Pick: Detroit

NFL – Game of the Day

Game of the day: Buffalo Bills at Tennessee Titans

Sunday, August 9

Buffalo Bills vs. Tennessee Titans (-3, 31)

Who's in, who's out

As is customary of the first preseason game, the starters are expected to play no more than two series for both teams minus a couple of exceptions.

Bills head coach Dick Jauron said this week that all four quarterbacks on the roster are expected to play and that particular focus will be placed on the team’s revamped offensive line.

All five of the Bills’ projected starting O-linemen will be playing different positions this season, mostly as a result of the loss of Pro Bowl tackle Jason Peters in the offseason. That includes first and second round picks Eric Wood and Andy Levitre.

Jauron said Wood and Levitre will play extensively Sunday, while one starter, tackle Brad Butler, will not dress.

Running back Marshawn Lynch, who has suspended for the first three games of the regular season because of off-the-field conduct, will not play. Fred Jackson and Dominic Rhodes are expected to pick up the slack.

Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher called it “an honor” to be playing in the Hall of Fame Game and added “we’ll clearly be competitive throughout the game.”

Fisher has played it close to the vest this week with regard to playing time. Don’t forget that the Titans didn’t open their training camp until July 31 while Buffalo reported a full week earlier.

Kerry Collins is expected to start at quarterback and speculation out of Tennessee is that backup Vince Young will start the second half and play the entire third quarter, though it was not confirmed by Fisher.

Wide receiver Kenny Britt, the Titans’ first-round pick out of Rutgers, has a sore hamstring and will not play.

The Titans are also banged up on the offensive and defensive fronts. Defensive tackles Spencer Johnson and John McCargo, who are competing to replace All-Pro Albert Haynesworth, both had to leave practice Friday and it will be a game-time decision.

Coming and Going

The hype this week has surrounded the Buffalo debut of wide receiver Terrell Owens. The Pro Bowler adds to an already solid cast of receivers in Buffalo that features Lee Evans, Roscoe Parish and Josh Reed. All three are expected to play a significant role in the Bills’ newly-installed no-huddle offense.

The Titans’ most significant offseason acquisition was receiver Nate Washington from the Steelers. Washington caught 40 balls for 631 yards and three touchdowns as Pittsburgh’s primary slot receiver last season. Tennessee hopes he can provide a much-needed downfield threat.

Line Movement

The Titans opened as 3-point favorites with the total set around 31, but that’s changed slightly at some books. Action on the Bills and the over has resulted in some shops pushing the line to Tennessee -2.5 with the over/under number a half point higher at 31.5.

Trends

The Titans are 27-25 against the spread in the preseason under Fisher’s guidance. The over is 28-23-1 in August games coached by Fisher. Jauron, entering his fourth season as the Bills’ head man, is 7-5 ATS in the preseason. The over has gone just 4-8 during that time.
In the last 10 Hall of Fame games the over/under is 5-5.

Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 91 degrees in Canton with gusty winds.

Minnesota Twins vs. Detroit Tigers Detroit Tigers
-130 at BODOG > 8h.
1* Take the Detroit Tigers on the Moneyline, This pick falls into one of my top MLB systems and the Twins are just 0-8 in Scott Baker's (9-7, 4.59 ERA) last 8 starts as an underdog of +110 to +150. Baker was hit hard in his only start against the Tigers this season allowing 7 hits and 5 earned runs over just 6 innings and I look for the Tigers to hit him hard Sunday afternoon. The Twins are just 2-6 in their last 8 games overall and they are just 1-5 in their last 6 games in game 3 of a series. The Tigers are 15-4 in their last 19 home games against a right hand starter and Jarrod Washburn (8-7, 2.93 ERA) has pitched solid overall this season so I look for him to bounce back after a rough outing against the Orioles. Washburn has owned the Twins this season allowing just 1 earned run over 2 starts (14 innings) against them and I look for him to have a solid start Sunday afternoon. Take the Detroit Tigers as my MLB Bonus Play for Sunday afternoon.

Minnesota Twins vs. Detroit Tigers Detroit Tigers
-130 at BODOG > 8h.
Minnesota @ Detroit 1:05 PM EST
Play On: Detroit (Baker/Washburn) Listed

Minnesota is 54-56 overall this year while Detroit comes in with a 58-51 overall record this season. Minnesota skunked Detroit 11-0 last night so I feel like Detroit will be seeking major revenge today. Detroit is 14-6 this year at home when the money line is -100 to -125. Minnesota has lost 6 of their last 8 games overall. Detroit has won 4 of their last 6 games overall. Detroit bullpen has a 3.62 ERA at home this year. Washburn's record doesn't give him justice this year as he has pitched well. Washburn is 8-7 with a 2.93 ERA overall this year, 5-3 with a 2.84 ERA at home and 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA his last 3 starts. Washburn has a 3.05 ERA overall vs Minnesota since 1997. We'll recommend a small play on Detroit today! Thanks and good luck, Rocky

The Rangers are still trying to catch up to the Angels in the AL West. The Angels are scoring a ton of runs without Hunter and Guerrero. Their pitching isn't as strong as they would like but averaging almost 6 runs a game will make up for those deficiencies. LA Angels 10-4

(901) FLORIDA MARLINS
(902) PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
TAKE "(902) PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

"How often can you get arguably the best team in the NL if not baseball at home as a dog!! That's just what we get here on Sunday as the Phillies find themselves the underdog at home to Josh Johnson and the Marlins. Heading into Saturday's matchup, the Phils were on a bit of a downturn after their red-hot winning streak, as they had lost six of 10 games and dropped Friday's contest to the fish. Still, the Phillies are solidly in first place, six games ahead of Florida. The Phillies lead the NL in runs per game (5.25) and in Home Runs (149). Raul Ibanez and Ryan Howard both have 26 round trippers this year while Jayson Werth and Chase Utley are right behind with 23. The oddsmakers are counting on Josh Johnson to continue his excellent season as he's 10-2 with a 2.98 era. However, he does face veteran lefty Jamie Moyer who has a 10-8 mark and still shows he can pitch in the majors. Add to that Moyer's lifetime 13-2 record with a 2.83 ERA against the Marlins and he's worth a shot as a home dog with this power hitting Phillies club.

Game: Cleveland Indians @ Chicago White Sox

(924) Chicago White Sox -$143

(Listing Conteras and Huff)

The White Sox starting pitcher Jose Conteras has not had a good season as he is sporting a 4-10 record with a 4.95 ERA so far this year. The one bright spot that Contreras has had is a 2-0 record with an ERA of only 1.88 in two starts against the Tribe this season. For his career Conteras has had a lot of success against Cleveland as he has a sparkling 7-2 record with an ERA of 3.02 against the Indians. Cleveland's starting pitcher David Huff is somehow 1-0 against the Sox this season despite an ERA of 9.64 in two games against Chicago. Huff is really struggling to get batters out. Huff has given up at least six runs three times in his last seven starts. He's given up at least four runs five times over that span and hasn't allowed fewer than three in any of those starts. I look for the White Sox batters to knock Huff around in this one. The White Sox are 6-2 in the last eight meetings between these two teams. Play on the Chicago White Sox.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Matt Rivers, who has been a member of this site since its inception, has decided to retire as a professional handicapper immediately because of personal family matters. Although his exit caught us by surprise, we certainly understand his placing family above all else and wish him nothing but the best in the future.

For those of you on long-term packages with Matt, you'll be receiving an email from Customer Service that outlines your options.

Matt's sudden departure also gives me the opportunity to let you know that I will be bringing on board a new handicapper to the site on September 1. At this time I can't reveal who he is, but this is a guy who I've followed and pursued for years and to say I'm thrilled that we will be his exclusive online home shortly is an understatement. He is a former journalist, like myself, who has excelled at handicapping and what you will enjoy most is the fact that he has turned a profit for 16 consecutive NFL seasons.

That's not a typo above, and he didn't win just one big play, the Super Bowl; he's actually turned a profit for the ENTIRE season, start to finish, for 16 years consecutive years.

And of course Anthony Redd will be returning next weekend when preseason football really kicks off.

Lots of changes, but this is a business that demands evolution, not complacency.

Saturday comp play winner on the Padres, now 14-3-1 the last 18 days with our comp plays.

Boy, oh boy, talk about a change of events. The Red Sox came to the Bronx on Thursday having won ALL 8 season series meetings against the Yankees, but 3 days later, and the Yankees have built a 5 1/2-game lead in the East.

They are also riding a 6 game win streak, while the BoSox have now lost their last 5.

Boston has also been held without a run in their last 24 innings of play!

Andy Pettitte's last 2 starts have seen just 2 earned runs cross in his last 13 innings of work.

Jon Lester will try to salavge this lost weekend for Boston, and while the southpaw is 3-0 over his last 5 starts against New York, it is hard to make a case for him when you can't count on the Red Sox to deliver at the plate.

If Boston can win 8 straight over the Yankees, New York can certainly win 4 straight over the Red Sox.

Things are just going to well for the Yanks right now, and we are all about riding the Pinstripers into the winner's circle once again tonight.

Play on the Yanks.

G-Man brings a 20-10 comp play run the 30 days into action this Sunday.

Have to go with the Phillies to avoid the broom at home against the Marlins.

Jamie Moyer has been a major thorn in Florida's side as the Phillies are a whopping 13-2 the last 15 times he has started against Florida. Most recently, Moyer worked 7 scoreless in a July win over Florida down in Miami.

Moyer is just 4-6 at home with an over 7 ERA, but it is hard to overlook the numbers I just listed above, so I won't.

Josh Johnson is 10-2 this season for the Marlins, but he has been showing some cracks in his armor, as the righty has allowed 10 runs his last 20 innings of works, but is 2-0 to show for it.

The bottom line is that I just don't see the Phillies getting swept on their home field.

G-Man going with old man river, Jamie Moyer to work his magic against the Marlins once again.

Nice winner with the Padres on the run-line Saturday got me back on track with the Bonus Plays. For Sunday, I’ll play the A’s and rookie lefty Brett Anderson at Kansas City.

Prior to last night’s 12-6 loss to Zack Greinke and the Royals, Oakland had won all three games against Kansas City this season – not only winning, but dominating, posting combined run-differential of 28-9 in those victories. Tonight, the A’s send Anderson to the hill, and the kid has been dynamite in the last six-plus weeks. Over his last eight starts, Anderson has given up a total of 13 runs (including just one home run) in 51 2/3 innings (2.27 ERA), and Oakland is 6-2 during this stretch, including 4-1 on the road.

During those five road starts, Anderson has recorded 2.93 ERA with the A’s winning at Boston twice, at Tampa Bay and at San Diego.

Want another example of how good Anderson has been? During a month-long stretch from July 6 through Aug. 2, he has a 1.87 ERA. The rest of Oakland’s starters have a 7.87 ERA! What’s more, the rookie has been a much better pitcher in day games (3.05, 1.11 WHIP) than night contests (4.84 ERA, 1.40 WHIP).

By comparison, his counterpart today is Luke Hochevar, who has a 5.40 ERA overall and a 5.45 ERA in day games, and in his last two trips to the hill, he’s given up 11 runs (all earned) on 18 hits in 11 innings (9.00 ERA), losing to Baltimore and Seattle. But that’s not the worst of it. Hochevar has faced the A’s twice in his young career and he’s lasted just 6 2/3 innings, allowing a whopping 14 runs and 16 hits for a 18.90 ERA. Not surprisingly, Kansas City lost both games by scores of 7-1 and 12-3.

Throw in the fact that Oakland is 4-2 in its last five games overall and 29-10 in their last 39 contests in Kansas City – while the Royals are 25-56 in their last 81 overall and 7-20 in their last 27 at home – and this one’s a no-brainer. Play the A’s at a dirt-cheap price.
3? OAKLAND (BASED ON A 1? TO 10? RATING)
