I think he is way off base on this. The format is what makes winning the triple crown special. His horse just wasn't good enough yesterday. If you have a TC winner every 5 years, than the achievement no longer means anything. I didn't hear Real Quiet's owner whine like a bitch, and his horse ran an excellent Belmont.

Corburn went way overboard with his rant, but he did have a good point. It usually takes somebody who is outspoken to get the ball rolling to make changes, which are sorely needed in horse racing. From the cheap claiming horses to the Triple Crown, there needs to be some serious reforms made in horse racing, or the sport is going to die.

Agree that many changes need to be made in horse racing. But this ISN'T one of them. The Triple Crown Should be very hard to achieve, and you need to have a true champion to achieve it. Just because his horse wasn't up to the task, doesn't mean we need to cheapen it in the future.

Also the problem is, if you don't allow other horses to run, you'll wind up with 3 horses running in the Belmont.

With the modern day trainers methods of using more ringers and fresh horses in the Belmont, I don't think we'll see another Triple Crown winner in my lifetime unless another Secretariat comes along. Which is highly improbable.

So when they change the format, are all the people calling him a jerk cry baby going to stop supporting horse racing?

I am gonna take a stab and say we don't have too many thoroughbred horse owners in here....when you own a horse and the monthly stall/feed/vet bills pile up and it's a #'s game and the bottom line is making $....get back to me and let me know if you wouldn't hold your horse out til you saw a proper spot to allow him/her to succeed...the Tonalist connections played the game to its utmost...and won..this Chrome owner is sore loser....and comparing NCAA baskets to horses is apples and oranges...cheers

Look at the horses who ran the Derby and the Preakness and came back for the Belmont. Ride On Curlin and General A Rod. They finished 7th and last in this race. CC got beat by a little over a length. Look at the top 3 finishers. All fresh horses. The system has to change or they should just junk the Triple Crown and stop calling it the World Series Of Horse Racing. There are a couple things they can do. They can spread these races out more, which for the horses sake is the right thing to do. Or they could go to a point system that a horse can accumulate from each of the Triple Crown races. The highest point winner at the end gets the big prize.

These are separate races---to win a Grand Slam in Golf or Tennis--you have to win each event. There are different players in each one.

I agree with your general point. However, citing Real Quiet is not the best example. Victory Gallop didn't pass on any of the Triple Crown races. He finished 2nd in both the Derby and the Preakness before winning the Belmont.

The guys horse got beat, if you win the triple crown you have the best horse in ALL 3 races....He did not have the best horse yesterday plain and simple....If you win the grand slam of golf you win all the majors some of the same players are in each and some our not.....Grumpy Old man is what he is....This horse cost him next to nothing and he has a freak, be glad you have him, and after this year or next send him to the breeding shed to make millions.....

I stand corrected Shorty. Funnycide would be a better example.

The best example might be Silver Charm, who got picked up in the stretch by Touch Gold. I don't believe Touch Gold was entered in the previous two legs.

Edit: Touch Gold was apparently entered in the Preakness.

It would reduce the field size for the Belmont Stakes (and even the Preakness) and on most years different horses win the Derby and the Preakness , then we would be reducing the field size for nothing which would really water down the Belmont most years.

That's what I was saying. I think the point system would be a great way to do this, and add a little excitement into the game. Much like it does the Fed-Ex point system in golf that leads up to the final tournament. The Belmont could be for all the money, and make some of these owners/trainers re-think skipping some of these races. Just what the sport needs...

Unfortunately Visa yanked their sponsership of the points program. I think the points winner used to receive a million while a TC winner would have gotten 5 mil.
