NEW YORK -- ESPN has suspended outspoken sportscaster Stephen A. Smith for a week because of his comments about domestic abuse suggesting women should make sure that they don't do anything to provoke an attack.

Smith's commentary occurred during a discussion on ESPN2's "First Take" last Friday about the NFL's two-game suspension of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice following charges he assaulted his now-wife. The remarks attracted widespread attention, including a stinging rebuke online from a fellow ESPN personality.

Smith issued an on-air apology Monday, saying it was the most egregious mistake of his career.

A day later, ESPN took action. The network's chief executive, John Skipper, told ESPN's staff in a memo it was done after a "thoughtful discussion" about appropriate actions with men and women in his company.

"I believe his apology was sincere and that he and we have learned from what we've collectively experienced," Skipper said.

Smith will not appear on "First Take" or ESPN radio until Aug. 6, the network said.

During the Rice discussion, Smith alluded to women in abuse cases when he said, "Let's make sure we don't do anything to provoke wrong action ... we got to also make sure that you can do your part to do whatever you can do to make, to try to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Shortly after Smith's remarks, colleague Michelle Beadle responded on Twitter that "I was just forced to watch this morning's First Take. A) I'll never feel clean again B) I'm not aware that I can provoke my own beating."

Beadle, host of ESPN2's "SportsNation," continued with a series of tweets. She said that "Violence isn't the victim's issue. It's the abuser's. To insinuate otherwise is irresponsible and disgusting."

Smith, during his apology, said it wasn't his intention to say that women could be responsible for their own abuse. "It was not what I was trying to say," he said. "Yet the failure to clearly articulate something different lies squarely on my shoulder."

Smith didn't explain the point that he was trying to make.

ESPN frowns upon its personalities attacking each other on social media or other forums. But in this case, the network said it has decided not to discipline Beadle.

When Ocho had his incident with the headbutt a few years back his comments were actually pretty similar.

I actually do get his point in that these golddiggers who value $, status over character shouldn't exactly be shocked but still nobody deserves to get hit.

What disgusts me about this is what happened to freedom of speech. If you do not agree with his opinions, that is fine. However to suspend him over his beliefs (albeit admittedly phrased wrong) is ridiculous.

What if domestic abuse groups tell advertisers they are pulling off of 1st take?

Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom of consequence.

Not to mention you gotta look at the platform it was used on. This isn't cable news or shock-jock radio, it is some show on at noon on ESPN that's default topic is probably something like "DOES LEBRON JAMES HAVE TO WIN A TITLE IN CLEVELAND FOR HIS LEGACY?" This is a dumbed down show for the masses that isn't gonna be talking about the intricacies of domestic violence. I'm surprised the producers even want these guys talking about it for more than 30 seconds...

The problem is everything is always connected to the mighty dollar even when it trumps personal freedom. They actually have gone in depth on heavier topics throughout the years on this show when warranted so this is nothing new to this show's audience. For the record it first airs 10AM - Noon

P.S. I highly doubt such a group even advertises on the show much less the network.

Yeah I've never seen the show in real time but I've seen YouTube clips of them screaming at one another about trivial topics. I have a few more opinions on the show but some of them are gonna be misconstrued so I'll holdoff. Skip Bayless is the greatest sports troll of all time though IMO.

edit re: advertisers. I meant domestic abuse groups put pressure on advertisers to pull ads for the show.

This is the same show that 1 dude called RG a cornball brother because he might be republican right? I mean it is catering to the lowest common denominator shock value, SAS just went over the line. EGD their parent company is Disney, I mean can't really be rationalizing going Mike Tyson on your s/o when its gonna be on YouTube 25 mins after the fact.

Ask Donald Sterling if there are consequences due to the spoken word.

Sadly I disagree strongly with what happened to him & I am a so called minority (albeit mixed but still). While I strongly am against his views, I feel he has the right to have them as I do the right to dislike them. He should have never been forced to sell.

If you are the CEO of Starbucks, do you think it would be acceptable to say "woman should not get promoted because they don't have the same ability as a man."

Do you think as the CEO he should be able to say this in an open forum and have nothing happen to him? It's his opinion?

How about a cop? Should he be able to say "all Asians are scum and I hate them." He should not get punished because it's his opinion?

When you are the voice of a network on television, you just can't say certain things that are offensive. If you do, you will drive viewers away and no television network wants to lose viewership.

Sure, Steven A. can say whatever he wants as long as he's willing not to be employed by ESPN or anyone else. No problem.

Leave it to you to use some far fetched examples. Regardless every person has a right to their opinion. You say that "you just can't say certain things" because the majority of society want to push that belief even though it is technically not right.

Everyone sure does have the right to their own opinion no doubt. And every boss has the right to fire their employees for offending their customers too. What he said was that women can provoke their own abuse. There's nothing about what he said that is acceptable. He's lucky he has a job quite frankly.

I don't think a cop making disparaging remarks against a racial group is far fetched at all. Happens each day in America.

It is also OK for a company to not want to sponsor a show that has a segment where the opinions expressed rationalize domestic violence (an incident that is on tape of Sugar Ray Rice aka Cassius Ray KOing his wife)

Also didn't help that arguably ESPNs most visibile female ripped him for it.

Yeah, no doubt. I can't believe Cari Champion was able to hold her tongue.
