Steam Vs. Service Plays

There have been many threads started about "Steam" and what it is or is not. Other threads have been started about "Service Plays". It has been my experience that often times the player mistakes the release of certain Service Plays with Steam. Currently as I write this, there is a great deal of line movement on a number of games released by Services. To most players, this would be interpreted as Steam because they don't necessarily know the reason behind the move. Steam is a whole different animal, in my opinion. Point here is don't necessarily equate large line movement as Steam but rather a release from a particularly popular Service. Futhermore, note that the lines on Saturday begin to move significantly at 10:00 a.m. EST or so, the time many of the services release their plays. Just my thoughts. Feel free to add your own.

Maybe Im Too Much Of A Skeptic But Dont All "big" Services Give Out Both Sides? Any Honest Hard-working Handicapper Will Have A Tiny Number Of Good Clients Who Pay A Nice Commission On Winnings. Services By Definition Are Big, Not Because They Bet The Games Themselves, But Because They Hard-sell And Ensure Some Winners By Touting Both Sides.

Not all services give out both sides. There are many honest services. That being said, marketing is a very important element of the service being successful. You might be surprised to find out that many of the larger services have well over thousands of customers who pay for their releases. When those plays hit the books, the lines move, and have nothing to do with steam but the recreational player can not tell the difference.

More than a few services give their plays to the books BEFORE they give them to the clients. So either way you are going to see moves, and more moves.

That is why I generally say that worrying about line moves is a waste of time and bile.

I think that you guys are really over estimating these services. There is no service out there that has "well over thousands" of clients. NO WAY! Also services in general give out alot of games over the course of the day to spread out their action. If a service has 300 clients, which that almost never happens, they might give out 8-10 different games. They would never put all 300 clients on the same game.

Want- Why would a service give out the plays to books early? I have never heard of this.

Just to name a few of the larger services that do have thousands of call in clients for their late phone releases. Not saying they are good or bad, just speaking of the volume:

Nationwide Sports (i.e. The Gold Sheet)
Northcoast Sports
ATS Consultants

All large and well marketed. If you don't believe people are willing to pay for services, just check the "Views" received each Saturday in the College Football Forum under the thread entitled "Service Plays" and compare those numbers to other threads.

ace, most reliable services, which I agree, aren't that common, will post their plays for all members to see......

For example, this site has several solid handicappers that are legit.......http://www.whotobeton.com/

Not a shill of course, just the fact that I see many of their plays personally all of the time, and guys like The Prez in NFL & John Gold in hockey are winners....period.....Point is, once again, there are some trustworthy ones out there. But as you can probably see, if there are truly legit, you will pay the price..........

Oldman- You are right about those guys having thousands subscribers. I do not believe that they do however have thousands of callers for the phone selection. Maybe I am wrong. I have very little knowledge of 900 numbers, but when a tout has a one-on-one relation with the customers, those are the customers who move decent amounts on games. I dont see how people can call a 900 number and turn around and bet anything significant on that. When you are talking live to salesman it is alot easier to be sold.

BTW- I use to subscribe to Northcoast for 4 years and never once called on for a phone play. I used the newletter more for the writeups they had on all the college games.

Hache- I do think that there are good handicappers out there that can do a decent job in certain sports. I also do not believe many of these services side. I just did not understand the comment about the touts giving the plays to books a week in advance.

imo........there are good services out there, just like good cappers in therx cfb and nfl forums............and there are bogus services just like some bogus cappers in the above mentioned forums....

some services had mucho respect from oddsmakers and professional gamblers alike, at one time Doc's goy would move the line at every vegas books before a bet was made........

the problem with services, is that they have to market their product to make money...........and thats when the b.s. comes in.......

service plays will never be as strong as sharp or wiseguy plays....the main reason is the sharps are moving the line with their own money.....not someone elses.....
