I track the offensive scoring and defensive scoring rankings on a spread sheet. I add them both together and divide by 2 to get the average ranking. If you compare the 2011 rankings to the 2010 rankings there are some teams that are showing improvement and some that are going south. Keep in mind the level of competition these teams have played, that 2011 represents only 3 games and that I am comparing to 2010 which was a complete season. Still there are some strong indicators that should be considered.

Teams that are improving in the average rankings are: Cinn, Florida St, G Tech, Ohio, Purdue, Rutgers, USF, Texas, Texas Tech, Utah St, Vandy, W. Mich, Wyoming. Texas Tech has improved from number 58 in the combined rankings to #8 although their schedule to date has been easy. Cinn, Fl ST and G Tech have improved rankings which they maybe able to maintain.

Teams that are trending down are: Arizona, Auburn, BYU, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Nevada, N. Illinois, Ohio St, Oregon St, TCU, Troy, Tulsa, and Wash St. Most of these teams have played some stiff competition early on, but it is obvious that N. Ill, Oregon St, and Troy are down. Tulsa has played OU and Okie St and has Boise St next week. Ohio St is definitely down and their inability to score is taking it's toll. TCU will probably trend up as their schedule is manageable. Kentucky is having trouble scoring. Iowa's defense is not up to their normal standards. Nevada just lost to many offensive weapons. Hawaii last year averaged 35 in the combined rankings and is now ranked 81.5. Arizona last year averaged 47 in the combined rankings and is now 87.5.

Speaking of N. Carolina, they are going on the road to face the #1 scoring offense in the nation at this time, Georgia Tech. GT is averaging 59.33 ppg while N.C is only allowing 16.33 ppg. Somethings got to give. GT is a big surprise this year ATS and otherwise. Just shows what a great HC coach with a great system can do.

Pitt is 2-1 SU and 0-3 ATS thus far this season. Everyone expected their offense to get better and it has improved but only by 6.33 ppg. On the other hand everyone that Pitt’s defense would at least stay at their usual level but it has been allowing 6.02 more points a game then they did as an average last year. They have outscored their opponent s 97-76 and struggled against Maine.
Last year Arizona St was an ATS machine but is 0-3 ATS (I use goldsheet.com) so far this year. This is pretty common when a team was very successful as a dog in the prior year and finds themselves being favored more the next year.

Nebraska finished last season #9 in scoring defense allowing only 17.36 ppg. This year they are #66 allowing 24.67 ppg. They are now 0-3 ATS. They allowed Fresno St 440 total yds and Washington 420 total yds and both games were at home. This is not a typical Nebraska team and has definite flaws.

Penn St is also 0-3 ATS this year barely escaping with an outright win over Temple last week. With Joe up in the box I think it is time for Joe and the school to just end this thing with some dignity. Joe was invaluable on the field as a motivator and a leader. If it is all about his coaching record at least end it with some dignity. He is now more of a novelty than anything else. It is borderline pathetic from the outside looking in. It is just time to move on.

TCU found the offense a little too late against Baylor but their defense is a far cry from what they are used to putting on the field. Last year they led the nation allowing only 12.00 ppg. This year they are #87 allowing 28.67 ppg. Other than Boise St the rest of their schedule is manageable but they are a good exampld of how important defense is and what a difference it makes ATS.

Last year S. Carolina finished #43 in scoring defense allowing 23.14 ppg. That was good enough but this year they are allowing 33.33 ppg and this might catch up with them when they get further into their conference schedule which does does not include Alabama this year.

Texas is 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS this year. Now their fans are foaming at the mouth. You might consider that they have faced Rice (#109 in total offense), BYU (#104 in total offense) and UCLA (#39 in total offense but had 4 TO’s in the Texas game. Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and Baylor all have more fire power than Texas has shown to date so the verdict is still out in my book.

7 teams have already disappeared from the AP preseason top 25 poll although it is possible one or more may make it back by seasons end. Gone are Auburn, Georgia, Michigan St, Mississippi St, Mizzou, N. Dame, and now….Ohio St (there were plenty of red flags). They have been replaced by Baylor, USF, Texas, Clemson, Michigan, Illinois, and Georgia Tech. Let’s take a look at the newbies:

Baylor – ok now, so they snuck up on TCU and escaped with a win in the biggest game in many moons and with a national TV audience. They have since disposed of….SF Austin. Ok now we have the mighty Rice Owls on deck and dinner will be served once more at home. But then they travel to Kansas St who has a decent defense, host a decent (that is my word of the day) Iowa St team that may improve on a weekly basis with a good young QB, travel to Texas A&M and Oklahoma St, host Mizzou, travel to Kansas and then host OU, Texas Tech, and Texas. Hard to stick in the top 25 with more than 3 losses and I can see several combinations that can end with 4 losses. Texas A&M, OSU, OU for starters and Texas Tech could be the sleeper of the year. By season end Texas will be hitting on all cylinders although it remains to be seen if that is a V6 or a V8 engine. So that TCU is the basis of their status now and it is obvious that this is not a vintage TCU team.

Clemson – I thought a new OC might make a difference but throwing up over 38 ppg is pretty sporty. Now they face Florida St and V tech in back to back games. If they at least split those they might just hang in the top 25. I really have expected more from their defense but that may come around.

Georgia Tech – A really good HC with a really good system, stir in some average players, a spoonful of above average players, get a defense that can bend but not fold and you have Georgia Tech. #1 in scoring offense at 59.33 ppg they have nowhere to go but down in that category but it is obvious they have a potent offense. I like this team but it will be hard to get through their schedule without a loss and maybe as many as 4. They can overwhelm some teams with their offense but Mia Fl, Clemson, V Tech, and Georgia loom later on. You gotta like this team but a reality check may be in store.

Illinois – are they doing this despite who there HC is. I think it has more with preseason teams dropping and them being a rather unimpressive 3-0 SU. Still the Big 10 is down in my opinion and other than Wisconsin these guys can hang. They will lose at least one they are not supposed to but they do get Mich and Wisc at home in December. I don’t see them winning the conference title but they are competitive and pretty well balanced.

Michigan – Losing to N Dame exposes them a little but this is a team that you have to beat. Their defense is not there yet but I see them hanging in the top 25 all season long. If they end the season with wins over Nebraska and Ohio St they will have something to build on for 2012.

USF – they had to hold their heads down when they left S, Bend as they not only got a nice visitors check but a gift of a win as ND doubled their total yardage. It still counts and their big tests are all at home, Cinn, Mia Fl, and W. Virginia at the end of the season. We shall see. If they lose all three of those they will fade from the top 25 to be replaced by a hotter team at that point and time.

Texas – well their record is better than last years at 3-0 SU but they do not have any impressive wins to date. After Utah pulverized BYU that kind of took the zing out of that win and UCLA was beaten by Houston. Ahead they have OU, OSU, Texas Tech, Mizzou, Texas A&M, and Baylor (the last two on the road to end the season). The rubber has still not hit the road so Mack Daddy still has it to do. They are yet to face a big time defense so you can’t and they do not have an impressive when yet. A lot of optimism in Austin but we shall see. They may not fold like a pup tent again this year but they will havae to battle long and hard to get through the conference schedule without 3 losses or more. At this point they are still growing their horns and they are not at full maturity yet. Will Muschamp is looking really good though.

I like GT's offense, but a good dose of speedy linebackers and an ACC that sees this option every year will contribute in stopping it better than Kansas, who lest we forget, gave up 42 points to a Northern Ill team at home the week before..

Still, who would have thought G Tech would lead the country in scoring after week 3. Woulda think it.

Guys I spend the whole off season compiling info and stats. Once the season I back off and just try to fill a niche. I figure with enough information at hand most knowledgeable football guys like you can take it from there. Some people interperet better than others. Knowledge is your best weapon, if you follow hot and cold pickers then you get what you deserve. Glad you guys get it.

I think Graham gets way too much credit for the offensive success at Tulsa, and didn't think Tino fit his spread anyway. And the boob he brought in to coach the secondary is the same boob that was at Michigan and WVU under RR (Gibson). I can tell you that while he is a very good recruiter, he is a pathetic coach. Add to it that they changed their defensive scheme, and I expected them to give up more points this season especially through the air.

Anyway, thanks for all the info in these threads. Much appreciated.
