I could never get into sports betting - It never gave me the same kick as horse racing. Betting on sports feels dirty, impure and just a money making machine for the bookmakers. Something feels wrong betting on sports where players are getting paid fortunes - most of whom are horrible disgusting individuals.

Further, sports bettors are IMO bettors who just couldn't cut it in the pure form of gambling which is horse racing - the sport of kings.

Anyone else share this opinion or just me.

Thought I'd provoke you guys this evening!

yes that is true but the thoroughbred horse is such a pure species running his heart out - no money incentive - just seems cleaner than sports players.

Can't we ALL just get along?!!

Jockeys on the take

Trainers doping horses

Counterfeit winning tickets

Collusion and cheating

All a part of the Sport of Kings ;)

They have become just as bad as sports in regards to a dirty element.

For me betting on the horses and other sports is kind of the same thing.
Playing Blackjack, Poker or Bridge is the other section. I can still enjoy that other section, but it does not fascinate me as much as the bookmakers related betting.

I guess that's how I feel about college sports. Most of them are just kids that got a chance to extend their career. They are not going pro, so they play there hearts out cause they know they will probably not get to do it again, except for the next 4 years. That's pure to me.

I was positive last year. Have to pick your spots and get rebates. It can be done. You have to be more disciplined than other forms of gambling.

Kornholio - a top class horse race bettor can beat the book by farmore than the best sports bettors - fact.

I know individuals who beat horse racing by 27% year in year out to stake.

ie: if they've staked $1milliom in a year they make 270K.

Just asking. I didn't know. From what I've heard... it is impossible to beat the horses and that anyone that played the horses was a degenerate. But I didn't know or care if it were true. I bet on the triple crown races for fun every year, but that's it. Just for fun.

With rebates as high as 7% and exchange wagering, it is not that tough. The keys are to be methodical in your approach and to stay away from the type of bets with high parimutuel takeout percentages. And if you can develop your game to the point where you can turn a consistent profit, professional horsebetting is probably the best form of gambling because you can make money all year round unlike sportbetting where there is more seasonality.

With more and more tracks and associations pulling their signals from the foreign OTBs, the days of 7% at tracks where WPS, EX takeout is low (i.e. NYRA) may be doomed. Perhaps at places where WPS is at 18%, but the Ex, Tri, Pk3,4,5 takeout is criminal in the mid 20's. Kentucky is the next best place for a horseplayer in terms of takeout. Me, I won't play races there with the exception of Derby Day and particular matchups because of their ridiculously lax drug policies. It's the wild wild west of horseracing which is rather ironic

Tracks pulling their signals only impacts parimutuel establishments and has no impact on non-parimutuel offshore books.

Interesting Topic Valueman. I think we are talking about two different species here, European and American Gambling Man, who although the same, have been brought up on a different diet. Like most of the European GM, I have had Horseracing as my staple and my mentality has been processed by that. To achieve success, one had to stick to certain axioms, never bet odds-on, always hedge out a position, etc, even as a Bookmaker, I hated taking Match bets because it was just me having a bet but someone else doing the selection for me. American GM on the other hand, has never really got involved with Horseracing as the percentages were so bad but became expert in Match play.

It has taken me a couple of Years and I am still learning (from this Forum) to get the American mentality for Sports betting, which conflicts with the European style at times. The biggest difference I have found is in the hedgeing, which I am wondering if its worth it in Sports betting, but thats another Topic. As I said, I am learning all time from my American Cousins and I am sure there are things they could learn from European Punters. One which comes to mind is the hesitancy in taking the M/L instead of the points, but thats also another subject.
