How was West Va a 3point dog last week to an unranked Va Tech team..I could see if W VA..was rank 25 or so..But they were 6th in the nation..If they were dogs..Isnt the perception that Va Tech is a better squad..and should be ranked accordingly? Help me out..I just dont understand.

Agreed, Omaha. This is a classic case of putting your $$$ where your mouth is. Pollsters voting on ties to conferences, looking at wins/losses/schedules, come up with a heartfelt opinion on who are the best 25 teams in the country. Bookmakers and gamers look at who they are willing to put their $$ on to win....and, in this case, knew more than the pollsters!

Reminds me of late season upsets (a-la K-State beating OU in the Big XII Championship game last year). Fans complain that the underdog should now be ranked higher than the favorite....but if the same 2 teams lined up to play again, which team would you be willing to put your $$$ on?

People listen to who their heart tells them they want to win, but they should listen to who the WALLET tells them will win. Great observation, Greedy Reedy.

I attended UVA and live in Charlottesville, VA. Va Tech a lifelong rival and would not have reached the success they enjoyed if they had played in the ACC rather than Big East all those years. They were able to point for maybe three games a year and were very good doing that. Beamer is a master at getting his team ready for one game.
Now in ACC you can pick your spots with them. For example, I picked N. C. State two weeks ago going into Blacksburg off of a tough ACC Game. Va Tech
was giving 9+ and lost by 3 SU.
This past week I took Va Tech because they hate W Va and again Beamer will get them up for one game. They are not a bad team at all, just inclined to play down to the competition as with Temple year after year when they were in the Big East. Having to play teams like Wake forest for example, watch as Va Tech will consistently not cover.
Most knew that West Va was not a top ten team this year and you will see them just staying in top 20 now, even with their weak Big East schedule.
Great thing about this forum is that , no matter what your question, someone is close to the situation. LOL on all your future plays.

Omaha, i will respectfully disagree -- rankings in the polls have A LOT to do with pointspreadds -- we both know why

You are correct that Temple, Akron nor North Carolina will win many games this year. Syracuse is a little different in that they have a solid offensive line and two good backs. Knowing that his team had not been challenged, Coach Groh chose to let his team play in the trenches all game long. It was a very good game and Virginia eventually wore Syracuse down, thus telling Groh what he wanted to know. The Cavs are fast, deep in talent in most positions and also won't be intimidated by anyone.
Also, the Syracuse game was the first in which Coach Groh showed anything other than a completely vanilla offense. Passing when necessary, QB Hagans was 11 for 12 and 202 yards. He also scrambled 3 times for another 75 yards. I would not lay more than 13 points against Clemson because with Florida State, Miami, Va Tech, Ga Tech still to go, Groh is only going to show what is necessary to win --- not a bit more.
It remains to be seen how much the loss of DE Chris Canty late in the Syracuse game will affect the pass rush. Clemson QB Whitehurst is a great passer, given the time. I think you will begin to see some pressure from those linebackers on Thursday Night and if they do disrupt the Clemson timing, it will be a long night for the Tigers. Still, I am not playing the game simply because it wont be until Florida State or Miami that Groh will turn out the dogs, then we will all see just how good these Hoos are.
Appreciate all the greats posts and game breakdowns. Keep up the good work.

STX, You are right on, in that this Virginia team is for real. I hit them the first three weeks and then got burned last week when Coach Groh chose to kneel down the last series at the 6 yd line, rather than run up the score.
With large wins not so important as in years past, this coaching staff will be satisfied to keep running the ball (which they do well).
I may still make them a play, but if you follow the ACC, take a look at Maryland at home against a Ga Tech team that seems to be completely in a fog. Also I am looking at N. C. State over N. Car. This N. Car. team has talent ( I saw them play at Virginia), but there are definite problems on the team. Take it to the bank, this coach will not be back for another year. Even though this is an annual blood bath, I think N. C. State will roll this year.

Hoos,

Just messing with you, I did play the game at -15 though. If

UVa's D keeps Whitehurst in check early this one could get out

of hand. What about Wake? + 5.5 and climbing, what is the injury

situation down there?

For a comprehensive update on all injuries, go to ThePrescription.com
There will be a bar at the top of the home page. Go across to therx.com stats and a display will allow you to access up to the minute injury reports for major league and college teams. This is a good source before making final wagers.
I think this line will continue to go up, simply because the public sees Tech as the better team. The fact is they are much deeper, but probably on par as long as Wake doesn't have key injuries. As I stated before, Tech plays off of emotion (Beamer Ball is just flat out fly) and you can't get a team to that level every week, thus when Tech percieves they are playing an inferior opponent, they will most times play down to the competition.
I won the last two weeks with tech (once for , once against) but don't plan to play them this week. I just see too many other games I like.
