Think poor black kids in DC can go to the same schools as Obamas girls?
Up until last nite they could.Once again the party of "free choice" is anything but.

Reporting from Washington -- Congress is poised to do away with one of former President George W. Bush's signature initiatives in education: the taxpayer-funded vouchers that enable students from low-income families in the District of Columbia to attend private schools.

About 1,700 children in kindergarten through 12th grade receive the $7,500 annual scholarships. Four times as many apply

The party for the poor wants to make sure only the rich have school choice. One of many many many many ironies in American politics today.

there is no need for vouchers if the goal is to get the public school system back on track.

so while we are getting the govt schools 'back on track' we will just let the people who can afford to go to private school get ahead and to hell with everyone else?? How about vouchers for everyone.

you wont get me on a lefty talking point with this one. im a realist. most of your success in life comes from how the people who brought you into this world are financially, that's why the rich always stay rich and don't become poor, they send there kids to the top schools, those kids make money, they have kids, and keep on and on and on.

its not realistic for anyone besides the rich to go to these private schools. that's just reality. public school is for the middle and lower classes. maybe 1 out of 10 times a lower to middle class kid will succeed through this system, and enter the upper class and then be able to send there kids to private school and on and on, but that is a rarity.

90 percent plus of the time you will live your entire life in the class you were born in. i know i'll never be rich, because i wasn't born rich. ill live a middle class life, hopefully make good money with these degrees im attaining, but i know i'll never send my kids to private school because i wasn't the 1 out of 10.

I wasn't born 'rich', but I will be in the upper class if my life isn't cut short. My kids will attend a private school if I have to work 3 jobs. Work hard, think big, live large.

Back on track? Don't hold your breath. The way they'll get back on track is through competition.
So I'm glad to see your opposed to see poor inner city black kids get a chance to learn and diversify with more affluent white and black kids from the burbs and vice versa in clearly better learning enviroment.
I really can't believe how fuckin stupid some of you people are.

And therein lies the rub. If you want your kids to go to private school, fine. PAY FOR IT YOUR OWN SELF!!! But don't expect me to pay taxes for public schools AND pay taxes so everyone can get vouchers and send their kids to private schools.

Funny how most conservatives are all against Government interference and Government handouts and Government subsidies except when it comes to things that benefit them.

HUH? We are proposing the money follow the student aka a voucher instead of the govt telling you where you must go to school. You would pay the same taxes as you would now, its just if you would like to attend Central XYZ instead of South XYZ you can do that WITHOUT having to jump thru massive loops. Simple concept.

So every kid gets a voucher...whats to prevent overcrowding? Who decides which kids won't get in when the school is full?

You have given up before you even got started. Sad.

im not giving up. im living the life of the class i was born into which is the middle class. i can accept making 80k and working till i'm 65. and if i have kids, maybe they'll break into the top class, and start a cycle.

i guarantee you, you will stay in the middle class, especially with this society now. maybe your kid will get lucky though.

That means there would be competition for the students, schools would have to perform. No students, no money.
