Student: 'It Just Makes Me Sick...'

<!--startindex-->A biology class lesson in Gunnison, Utah involving the dissection of a live dog has outraged some parents and students, according to a report.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 align=right border=0><TBODY><TR><TD></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Biology teacher Doug Bjerregaard, who is a substitute teacher at Gunnison Valley High School, wanted his students to see how the digestive system of a dog workedBjerregaard made arrangements for his students to be a part of a dissection of a dog that was still alive.

The dog was still alive, but the teacher said it was sedated before the dissection began.

With the students watching, the sedated dog's digestive system was removed.

"It just makes me sick and I don't think this should go on anywhere and nobody's learning from it," student Sierra Sears said.

The teacher said the lesson would allow students to see the organs actually working.

"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Bierregaard said.

The school's principal, Kirk Anderson, said notifications went to parents explaining the dog was going to be euthanized and that the experiment would be done with the dog's organs still functioning.

The teacher is standing by his decision and calls it the ultimate educational experience.

Principal Anderson said he supports the lesson and it will be allowed to continue because the students are learning.

The dog used in the experiment was going to be euthanized despite the class project.

I would think there has to be some law against this. At the very least it is sick. The teacher is sick and he is trying to make his students sick.

The parents should not allow him to continue teaching. If enough people speak out, the community will have to listen.

The administration of the school should be brought up on charges also.

Pass his name along to PETA. They know how to deal with his kind.

Agreed

Also belive parents should be notified of any dissection involving any animal.

I take it everyone would have felt better had he put a frog on the carving block?

And in some countries people can buy dogs at the market just as we as Americans can buy live crabs in our markets....and cows get a religious pass in India.

Is there any standard on the planet for what animals are offered a truce?

I suppose that Hardee's "Real Angus Beef" commercial goes over real well in India just like the dog story of this thread.

The fact that the dog was to be euthanized does little to dispel my disgust that this moron wanted the animal alive while its guts were being examined outside of its body. Gosh I guess I'm just too sensitive.
Is this really something that a computer sim couldn't have accomplished?
The government has a problem with a Janice Jackson boob shot but we aren't going to bat an eye at this violence exhibited before impressionable young people.
I'd like to give this teacher an "ultimate education".

So is all the disgust I'm seeing in this thread because he used a dog instead of a frog, or the fact that the subject for dissection wasn't dead yet?

Are some animals "kosher" for scientific experiment while others aren't?

Living creatures should not be dissected. Are you some sort of nut job or something Marco?

I have pet dogs and I've had pet frogs and I wouldn't cut either up. But yeah I'm pretty PO that the subject wasn't dead yet and I'm a dog lover. And I'm beginning to wonder just WTF your point is here.
And no, no animal is kosher for scientific experiment, they can experiment on death row inmates but leave the dogs, rabbits and monkeys alone.
Now please spare me the crap about eating meat and wearing shoes, kay.

PETA will give him tips on killing dogs...they are the best at it. I never did understand the dissecting lessons; if kids have no interest in making a career out of science/medicine, why bother?

"Living creatures should not be dissected. Are you some sort of nut job or something Marco?"

OK, now we're getting somewhere....I take it the major problem with this scenario is the fact that the dog was still alive when some guy started whittling on it.....I can see and understand this point...

If it's because a dog is off limits because it's taboo to use animals considered as house pets, then I really can't see much point. Animals are animals regardless whether the guy used a snake, rodent, dog, cat....whatever.....

Nut job? No, just trying to figure out which of two possible angles everyone was getting miffed about.
