pavano a superb game, gave up 1 run after 7 innings... 103 pitches...
the stupid manager came back w/ him in the 8th..
and he gave up a double w/ 1 out...
the choker benitez came in, single, error, walk walk walk, single... 2-1 lead turned into
2-4 deficit...

WTF....

this is happening to me a little too often.

Go get em' tomorrow. Even during the worse skids, good money management should keep you in the game.

Good luck

You're upset because the Marlins stayed with Pavano too long.

But then you're upset because they pulled him for Benetiz?

Can't have it both ways. If anything, Benetiz blew the game, not Pavano. At worst, Benetiz should've allowed one run in the 8th.

Starting pitchers start games because they are the best.

Relievers are in the bullpen for a reason: they just aren't as good as the starters. Eg. Gagne sucked as a starter.

you are either new to baseball or you're not too well informed!!!!

you can NOT compare a starter to a closer like Gagne... just like you can't compare a marathon runner to a sprinter.

That analogy is a stretch...

Starting pitchers are the best...that is why they are asked to go 6-7 innings per start, facing each hitter 3 times. Pitchers that simply aren't good enough to start are in the bullpen. This applies to long men, specialists, set-up men AND closers.

A guy that is truly a great pitcher can do both, like Smoltz. Randy Johnson has come out of the pen in the post-season before.

You can't deny that Gagne wasn't a great starter at the MLB level. The stats don't lie. (6-7, 4.75 in 2002).

Closers are highly over-rated my the media, especially TV broadcasters. There is too much hype created around them for little reason. A LOT of MLB pitchers could close. "Saving" a 2 or 3 run lead by getting 3 outs in the 9th isn't particularly hard. Rod Beck and his 84 MPH fastball saved 20 of 20 games last year for San Diego.

And, no, I'm not new to baseball.

The Expos are the worst team in baseball. Therefore, they have some of the worst starters in baseball. So, again, you make an invalid statement.

BTW, I'm not knocking Gagne. I think he is a good pitcher. I just used him as an example of a guy who had limited success as a starter.

If Gagne is so good, why doesn't he just start the game and "close" 9 straight innings every 5 days?

And no need to get personal.
