would be breaking Sisler's record if he does it in more than 154 games..

I am not sure what the justification was for not having an * next to Maris's record since it wasn't done in the same time frame either, its obviosuly more of an accompishement to get more hits or homers in less games. Anyway someone explain how 257+ hots in 162 game schedule = or defeats 257 hits in 154 game schedule...

To me, its a seperate record at best.

At one tim Maris did have an asterisk, I agree to an extent ...The record isn't as impressive obviously if it takes 8 more games...however at some point MLB decided to count records all in one...

Look at the NFL as well. ... 12 game schedule, 14, now 16 games...Did anyone say anything when the 2000 yard barrier was recently broken a few times because its now 16 games? OJ did it in 14 games.

Baseball has changed so much over the years that it would be necessary to put an asterisk on almost every single record. However, not all the changes favor the hitter. Today We have starting pitchers that never pitch more than 7 innings like Roger Clemens who is the top candidate for Cy Young yet hasn,t pitched beyond the 7 th. inning all year. Today We have middle relievers, setup men, and finally closes like Gagne instead of in Sislers day starting pitchers often expected to start and finish even if it required over 150 pitches. There were quite a few players hitting .400 back in the good old days. Why ? Were all the great baseball players born over 100 years ago ? Don,t you think that it would be a little easier hitting against a pitcher that has pitched 150 pitches than Gagne who comes in to face 3 batters ? There are a lot of pluses today but there are a lot of additional problems also. The simple fact is that when Babe Ruth hit his 60 home runs in 1927, The Yankee team batting average was .307 and Babe had Lou Gehrig batting .373 with 47 home runs batting behind him. Look at another big change. We used to have only 2 teams qualify for the World Series... The American league Champion and the National leaugue champion. What chance would that plan have today with all the rest of the teams playing for nothing. How boring. St. Louis against the Yanks and nobody else this year ? The result would be a lot of empty seats at a lot of ballparks !

if your going to look at it that way then screw #of games and go with #of at bats. if sisler had more at bats but played less games would that make you fell better if ichiro broke his record?
