So I saw this map of the US that shows the number of people who have smoked pot in the last month. It reminded me of the presidential election map. It's not an exact match, but have a look and see if you agree that the areas that have the higher levels of potheads also have the higher percentage of Obama supporters.

It's a little tricky because the colors are reversed. Red is more potheads in the above map and blue is more Dems in the map below.

Answer - As long as in-demand substances remain illegal to possess, it is impossible to accurately deduce the amount or frequency of use

Just add 10% to all the numbers and it's probably fairly accurate. lol. I guess they just did surveys or something. Not accurate, but shouldn't it be off by roughly the same across the country?

Yeah, that's why I added that second post above. Whatever the level of accuracy for a survey which asks respondents to acknowledge criminal behavior to an anonymous phone caller, it's likely to be equally flawed nationwide.

So then do you see the correlation in the two images? What got me thinking along these lines was New Mexico and Colorado. Two bastions of liberals surrounded by Repubs. Also some red areas of tokers surrounded by the pale and bluer areas of non potheads. Also interesting how the stoners line up just outside of Utah.

Well yeah...Actually, upon further reflection and looking at that first map, I'll rescind my submission that "polling data is equally flawed nationwide".

The bluer areas on the first map correspond almost precisely with the areas of the USA where penalties for pot possession are most stern. Thus it's reasonable that polling respondents in those areas were more likely to conceal pot use, while those in the "red" areas are less concerned that some anonymous person might know they use marijuana.

The majority of marijuana consumed in the USA is grown domestically, though there's plenty imported from south of the border and from British Columbia. Also to a much lesser extent from Southeast Asia

The majority of street methamphetamines in 2008 are smuggled in from south of the US border, though the domestic producers still exist.

Fortunately, the population of people who use street meth is relatively tiny (about 250,000)
