</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!--endclickprintexclude-->DELAND, Florida (AP) -- A skydiver lost both his legs when he struck the wing of a plane as he came down and later died from his injuries, officials said.

Cinematographer Albert "Gus" Wing III had already opened his parachute when he hit the plane that he had jumped from Saturday morning over an airport in DeLand, central Florida, police said. His legs were severed at the knees.

He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Fourteen other skydivers were in the air at the time of the accident, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Holly Baker said. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board were investigating.

Mike Johnston, general manager of Skydive DeLand, said the accident was not common.

What is the death rate out of 10,000 jumpers?

Anyone have stats on this? Is it 1-10,000 etc?

Have you ever heard the cliche, "cutoff at the knees"? This poor guy did not die from trauma, he bled to death. Normally it is chute failure, or chute entangled and splat. This is 100% the pilots fault. It is his responsibility to let the jumpers know when to jump, and where they are, at all times. What is the jumper supposed to do, look out for the plane and steer away? He has to live with this burden of guilt for the rest of his life. My prayers go out to all involved...OF

Did the skydiver hit the plane, or the plane hit the skydiver?:icon_conf
