I was thinking the exact same thing last night when I was checking the overnight lines on todays games. Ridiculous not to have every team playing on a day when everyone is off from work and school.

I don't ever recall this..I could be wrong but this was always a day with a lot of extra fanfare etc...MLB needs to take full advantage of holidays....

Yankees not even playing today...I can recall many Memorial day's with the Yankees game on ESPN..fireworks after the games etc...

You used to get all those doubleheaders on summer holidays from baseball and I think that last year it was the same way with about 10 games on Memorial day or Labor Day. Seems like the Monday travel day now is more important to the union than filling up ballparks on a holiday.

They should make all series this weekend 4 games. Then make Tuesday a short schedule.

They stopped having them some years ago because all kinds of teams complained about how their local town traditions were more popular with season ticket holders and how locals just didn't really want to watch baseball on the holiday. It makes sense sort of, we have baseball all year long, why would people make an extra effort to watch it today when they could do a number of other things.

Nah... Memorial Day baseball has been a tradition forever... Fans usually pack the stadiums.

There was an article recently about it -- this is the first year MLB has gone to a fully computerized schedule as opposed to the mom and pop outfit that previously made it. That is the reason you see 10 major league teams that have today off, yet a team like Toronto is playing.

Sucks. I love me some Memorial Day beisbol.

Actual Memorial Day is tomorrow, the 31st. We are celebrating today so people could have a 3 day weekend. There is a full slate tomorrow, the true Memorial Day

This is the first year I ever seen a schedule like this, not only a few day games, but they always have more games then this I will try to look the schedule up for the past two years, WB might be right but I sure dont remember unless I've lost my memory.

There were 12 games last year on Memorial Day and only 9 in 2003 so today isn't anything that new.

Fans didn't exactly pack the stadiums today any more than a usual weekend. I think most people just aren't into baseball at this point of the year and would rather do other things than worry about an early season game. All ESPN and MLB care about is having a few games on tap they can televise, having a full slate means nothing.

I remember San Diego's ownership complaining about getting day games on the day half the town seems to head to the beach or out of town. Today I was down in SD and sure enough the beaches were crazy. It wasn't even really beach weather, only getting up to low 70s, yet people were out there. Lots of people also went south of the border, when I left town the radio reports said at the San Ysidro crossing there were 23 lanes of traffic open with almost 500 cars waiting in each one!!! Having a game at night or not at all makes more sense.

Well fans packing the stadium on a Monday just like on the weekend is reason enough to have a full card.

It is better to have more ticket sales than the "average monday".

You make the mistake of assuming other stadiums would have been as full. I remember this discussion coming up some years ago with the MLB. Lots of cities said please don't have a game on a number of different days, and it was all based on local traditions. Some hate having July 4th because there are better fireworks shows and parades to compete with, while some love them because they are the best option. Same with Memorial Day, it might be tradition from a time when baseball was of huge interest to everyone, but now that its interest has waned a bit and watching games on TV is an everyday thing, going out to the park isn't what it used to be. With so many tickets now purchased by businesses and wealthy people who only go when its convenient, I think baseball is recognizing things just aren't the same as they used to be.
