MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #24
•Tanaka Gets In Another Simulated Game: Injured New York Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka threw approximately 44 pitches in another simulated game Tuesday. The session extended through three innings and included breaks. The 25-year-old Tanaka is trying to rehab his injured right elbow. The Yankees want him to test the elbow before the season ends to determine whether he will need Tommy John reconstructive surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament. Tanaka has been on a rest and throwing regimen for the past few weeks. He last pitched in a game on July 8. The team had hoped that Tanaka could return to the rotation by mid-September. In 18 starts before the injury, Tanaka posted a 12-4 record with a 2.51 ERA and had 19 walks and 135 strikeouts in 129 1/3 innings. The Japanese sensation signed a seven-year, $155 million contract with the Yankees earlier this year.
•Cardinals round out expanded roster: First and foremost, Mike Matheny wants his latest round of minor league call-ups to contribute to the club. However, the St. Louis Cardinals manager understands, too, that there is a residual benefit to bringing up the youngsters in September. "Contributions are first priority for us," Matheny said. "After that, it's also an acknowledgement of having a good year. Also the idea that they'll experience this atmosphere. On Monday, the Cardinals completed their September roster by purchasing the contracts of right-hander Sam Tuivailala and outfielder Tommy Pham from Triple-A Memphis, and recalling infielder Greg Garcia from Triple-A.
The Cardinals waited until the Redbirds completed the Pacific Coast League playoffs before making the additions. The Cardinals' active roster stands at 36. Pham and Tuivailala will be making their major league debuts, while Garcia is embarking on his third stint this season with the club. Tuivailala impressed Matheny during spring training, and not just with his velocity. "Throwing 100 (mph) doesn't hurt," Matheny said. "Besides that, he's learned to pitch, not just be a thrower, but learn to command his secondary pitches."
Tuivailala struck out 97 in 60 innings this season, the most strikeouts of any minor league pitcher with 60 or fewer innings pitched. He will pitch for the Peoria Javelinas in the prospect-filled Arizona Fall League. Pham, who converted from shortstop to outfield in 2007, is ranked by Baseball America as being one of the organization's top defensive outfielders and top throwers. He hit .324 with 10 homers and 44 RBIs in 104 games at Memphis. Garcia, who appeared in nine games for the Cardinals previously this season, hit .275 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs in 110 games at Triple-A. "They're going to get a taste of what a pennant chase is all about," Matheny said. "That's invaluable."
•Padres Hope Cabrera Will Return This Weekend: The San Diego Padres need all the help they can get offensively. They have scored the fewest runs in the major leagues this season (by far), have been shut out 17 times and also rank last in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. Shortstop Everth Cabrera could provide some help. Cabrera has been on the DL since Aug. 12 with a strained left hamstring but has made enough progress that Padres manager Bud Black said Cabrera could return for this weekend's series in Arizona. "He's closer. I don't know how to quantify that," Black said before Monday's 9-4 loss at Dodger Stadium. "We're hoping to see him in Arizona. I think there's a good chance."
Cabrera has been an offensive catalyst at times for the Padres over the past three seasons. He led the National League with 44 stolen bases in 2012 and led the Padres with a .283 average in 2013 while making the All-Star team. But his time in San Diego has come with some unsettling baggage as well. In 2012, Cabrera was charged with domestic violence in Arizona. The charges were later dropped. But his 2013 season ended early when he served a 50-game suspension as part of his involvement in the Biogenesis PED scandal. Cabrera's latest misstep came last week when he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana. The 27-year-old Cabrera could be subject to further discipline from MLB as a result of the latest incident. Black said he has not discussed the situation directly with Cabrera since the arrest.
•White Sox Not Worried About Abreu's Recent Power Shortage: Jose Abreu's home-run rate is down quite a bit since the All-Star break, but the Chicago White Sox aren't all that concerned. The 27-year old Cuban rookie first baseman has hit only four homers in 45 games since the break, but he's also raised his batting average and most secondary statistics significantly in that time frame. Either way, the White Sox aren't sweating it. "No concerns about that," general manager Rick Hahn said Monday, prior to Chicago's 5-4 win in 12 innings to start a four-game series at U.S. Cellular Field against the Oakland Athletics. "I think he continues to be a very effective offensive weapon even without the long ball. I don't know if he still leads the (American League) in slugging percentage or not. He's toward the top or he was toward the top. Any slowing down in that production he's ramped up in other ways."
That's putting it mildly. Abreu has hit .365 since the break, driven in 26 runs and scored 22. "No matter what happens the rest of the season, he has had such a fantastic rookie campaign and he gives us all real tangible reasons for optimism going forward," Hahn said. "We couldn't have asked for more from him this year, no matter what happens this point going forward." Abreu has 33 homers and 99 RBIs in his first season in the majors and he's raised his overall batting average from the .270s to a robust .317 despite an 0-for-5 performance Monday. Manager Robin Ventura has used Abreu as his designated hitter more since the trade of former DH Adam Dunn to Oakland a little more than a week ago, trying to get him a little rest in the stretch run of the longest season he's ever played.
Abreu's hitting hasn't really suffered while being the DH, but Ventura will likely get him back on the field sometime in the near future. As for his hitting, the White Sox's skipper isn't upset with the lack of power. "There's a part of him where average is important, too, and there is a learning process," Ventura said. "Early on, people were pounding him inside, thinking he couldn't hit a ball inside. It's evolved throughout the year, his swing and learning what they're trying to do to him. He wants to be a home-run hitter that also hits for average. I think him becoming a guy that can stay inside the baseball, the great hitters can all stay inside of the baseball and he's one of those. Home runs might not be at the pace that they were earlier, but he's still a great hitter and you want him at the plate when anything's on the line."
•Cuddyer Makes Presence Felt In Return To Rockies: The Colorado Rockies have two players vying for the National League batting title. Defending NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer wasted no time Monday proving he likely would have made it a three-way Rockies race if his body would have cooperated. The Rockies activated Cuddyer from the 15-day disabled list Monday, when the first baseman returned in impressive fashion by homering in his first at-bat of the Rockies' 3-2 loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field. The homer was the only hit of the night for Cuddyer, who is hitting .328 with seven homers and 20 RBIs while being limited to 35 games due to three stints on the disabled list.
Cuddyer hit for the cycle on Aug. 17, one day after he returned from missing 59 games due to a left shoulder fracture. But he went back on the disabled list on Aug. 23 due to a left hamstring strain -- the same ailment that cost him 25 games from April 21 through May 20. "Elite player," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Monday afternoon. "He's shown that, when he's been healthy this year when he's been on the field." Cuddyer, who hit .331 last season to win his first batting title, will watch as Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau and left fielder Corey Dickerson vie to succeed him as NL batting champ. Morneau, who had the night off Monday, leads the NL with a .316 average. Dickerson is hitting .313 after his 1-for-5 effort Monday but doesn't have enough plate appearances to qualify for the title. He needs to collect 76 plate appearances over the final 18 games to qualify.

•Incredible Stat of the Day
Kansas City Royals James Shields is 13-2 in his team starts against the money line (86.6%) in road games versus teams who strand 6.9 or less runners on base per game over the last 2 seasons. The right-hander has also recorded an overwhelming 11-1 mark the past two seasons in road games versus teams whose hitters draw three walks or less per game. The Royals will turn to Shields Wednesday night to help salvage the finale, and he appears poised for the pivotal start after allowing one run over 15 1/3 innings in his last two outings.
He came within two outs of his second complete game this season Friday at the New York Yankees. Shields yielded three hits, walked none and struck out six in a 1-0 win. "This is what we play baseball for," Shields told MLB's official website. "Hopefully, we can enjoy the moment, embrace it and have fun with it." Shields probably couldn't have picked a better setting than Detroit, where he's 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA in his last six starts and 4-0 with a 2.64 ERA in seven career outings.
