See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities
By JASON LOGAN

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

Lookahead spot

The Clemson Tigers need to be careful not to look past this Thursday’s home date with the Florida State Seminoles. Lurking behind FSU is a huge matchup with the Duke Blue Devils in the Littlejohn Coliseum Saturday.

The Tigers have stumbled against some of the tougher competition this season and a win over the Blue Devils could pave the way for a solid ACC run. However, Clemson needs to overcome a Seminoles squad that defeated Clemson three times last year – 1-2 ATS – including a 73-69 victory over the Tigers in the ACC tournament.

Letdown spot

The Chicago Blackhawks are trying to hang on to the Central Division lead but have come up short when trying to string wins together. Chicago has alternated wins and losses in its last six, heading into Wednesday’s home game against the Rangers, and have a busy weekend up ahead.

The Blackhawks have a monster matchup in Montreal Saturday night, then jump back on a plane to the Windy City to take on the Edmonton Oilers Sunday evening. Playing in Montreal is always a challenge, thanks to the lively crowds at the Bell Centre. Chicago runs the risk of taking the feisty Oilers lightly in a drastic change of scenery Sunday.

Schedule spot

The Houston Rockets fuel up the engines for an extended East Coast road trip. Western Conference teams have rolled their Eastern counterparts this season, however, those wins haven’t exactly produces pointspread profits.

Houston is 10-2 SU versus teams from the East but just 6-5-1 ATS. Those earnings shrink on the road, going 2-2 SU and ATS in Eastern venues heading into this trip. The Rockets visit the Atlanta Hawks Friday, the Washington Wizards Saturday, and Boston Celtics Monday, before heading to New Orleans to take on Western Conference rival New Orleans. Houston is only 8-8 ATS on the road overall this season.

Exposing the Top 25: Where the polls went wrong
By JESSE SCHULE

Each week throughout the college basketball season, Covers Expert Jesse Schule will dissect the new Top 25 rankings, looking for betting value. He'll showcase the most overrated team, along with the most underrated ranked team, and an unranked squad that he feels should be in the Top 25.

Most underrated Top 25 team: San Diego State Aztecs (11-1 SU, 9-3 ATS)

The Aztecs have only one blemish on their record and that loss came against the top-ranked Arizona Wildcats. They have played four teams ranked in the Top 25 and, while they came up short against the Wildcats, they did beat Marquette, Creighton and most recently an upset of the Jayhawks in Kansas.

San Diego State has been a profitable team to back so far, covering the points in nine of 12 lined games. The rest of the schedule features strictly teams from the Mountain West Conference, meaning the Aztecs don't see another ranked opponent for the remainder of the regular season.

Most overrated Top 25 team: Michigan State Spartans (11-1 SU, 5-4-2 ATS)

The Spartans are the highest ranked team with a loss and the only team in the Top 10 with a home loss. That defeat came against unranked North Carolina, their first home loss to an unranked team in over a decade.

"Michigan State did not want it that much more than we did," North Carolina coach Roy Williams told reporters. “They have only faced one ranked team so far, and it was a win in a close game against Kentucky. The schedule is about to get a lot tougher for the Spartans, and we could see them begin to struggle.”

Unranked team that should be ranked: Pittsburgh Panthers (11-1 SU, 3-7 ATS)

Unranked Pittsburgh is off to an impressive 13-1 start to the season, with its lone loss coming against Cincinnati in a 44-43 game played at Madison Square Garden. After a blowout win over Maryland by a whopping 20-point margin Monday night, we should see Pitt get some votes to move up in the polls next week.

PGA betting: Sony Open From Hawaii preview and picks
By MATT FARGO

The PGA Tour makes its stop in Honolulu this week for the Sony Open in Hawaii.

While we are just in our second tournament of 2014, we are actually in the eighth tournament of the season with the new wrap around schedule. Zach Johnson shot a final round 66 to win the Hyundai Tournament of Champions by one stroke over Jordan Spieth, his third win worldwide in his last six starts. The tour remains on the island for the second leg of the Hawaii swing with the Sony Open from Waialae Golf Course in Honolulu.

Waialae Country Club is a 7,044-yard, par 70 track that was opened in 1927 as a way to get more tourism to Hawaii and has hosted the Hawaii Open since its inception in 1965. While the course is short in length, it get its toughness from very narrow fairways and winds that can be troublesome. The wind was not an issue last year though as rookie Russell Henley won going away as his 256 (-24) broke the tournament record by four shots.

You won't see many big names and you will see a lot of rookies, 24 in all, who will all be out trying to do what Henley did - win in their first start on tour. Of the 30 champions from last season who played last week, only 18 are making the trip from Kapalua, all for various reasons. The biggest being the west coast swing starts next week and flying back after this event gives little time for prep for the Humana Challenge which involves three courses. Six of the top 25 players in this week's world rankings are in play this week.

Matt Kuchar (+1,400) is one of the favorites and I think he has the best chance over Adam Scott and Zach Johnson. Kuchar finished T6 at Kapalua as a third round 75 did him in but it was a good tuneup for this week. He has been one of the most consistent golfers the last few years and last season was a microcosm of that as he won twice, had eight top tens and didn't miss a cut in 23 starts. He had a T5 here in both 2013 and 2011.

Charles Howell III (+2,000) is still in search of his first ever PGA Tour victory and he came close a few times early last year including here. He finished T3 which came after a T2 in 2012 and those two finishes are part of seven career top fives. He was also a runner up in 2007. He has already been busy in the 2014 tour schedule as he has not missed a cut in five starts and has three top sevens to his credit.

Tim Clark (+2,200) has already played in five events with a T2 at The McGladrey Classic showing he is in good form. He is coming off an average 2013 but his track record here is solid with a T12 in 2009, a T25 in 2010 and a T2 in 2011. His best though was last year with a solo second behind Henley as his final round 63 wasn't good enough. Long known for a short but accurate driver off the tee, it makes sense that he has thrived at Waialae.

Chris Kirk (+2,800) won The McGladrey Classic in November, his second tour win, which got him into the field at the Hyundai last week. He was tied for the lead after the first day but a second round 75 knocked him out of contention. He had a very solid 2013 season with a runner up at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am and overall he had 11 top 25's in 24 events with just four missed cuts. Finished T5 here last year.

A longshot won it last year but backing another rookie is not a good option so we will go with Chris Stroud (+5,000). He already has a pair of T3 finishes this year, one at the CIMB Classic and one at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. While he did miss the cut at the Sony last year, he finished T13 in 2012 so he has clearly played well here and now that he is in good early form, his first PGA Tour win could be here.
