Does the Ice Cream man still come around your neighborhood ?

I know some of you are freezing your balls off right now , but in summertime, do your hear the music ?

Its summertime 12 months a year down here so we get the man just about every weekend...

I can still remember mom rummaging through her purse for money so we could haul ass down the street and catch him.

Nothing like a nuddy buddy for 4 bucks..

Yes I still want to run to the little multi color van and buy an overpriced rocket bomb pop

yes he does. he plays that song from the 1980s constantly over his loudspeakers...."Musicbox Dancer!"once in awhile he must put in the wrong tape because he will play a ton of Christmas songs. Pretty funny when its mid-July and you hear "Silent Night" blasting thru the neighborhood while your washing your car.

Ice cream guys usually own their own business, so tipping is not needed.

I used to work swing and that bastard with pomp and circumstance would wake me up driving 5 mph with his music blaring just when I was getting a good day's sleep.

Yes they still roll around here in small town Ohio. I personally favor the Pink Panther myself. The gum ball nose is the best.

Yes, and my two favorites are still the same as when I was a kid...

The chocolate eclair bars with the chocolate in the middle and the strawberry shortcake bars...

Yummy...

I lived in 90211 for a few years. No Ice Cream man in the neighborhood although you can just walk to Al Gelato on Robertson and get the good stuff.

Are they usually singly-owned? Or a network of trucks per company?

Guy comes in the summer, but infrequently. I have to fight the urge to run out there and get some Italian Ice with the little wooden spoons.

As a kid growing up in Brooklyn in the 1950's, next to the Dodgers and stickball and buck-buck, the ring of the bells on the ice cream truck was the biggest thrill of the summer.

So much so, it inspired me to write a poem (as a school project). It's the only poem I've ever written (and you're about to read why it has this distinction...)

The Ice Cream Man is coming
Brooklyn, NY circa 1954
In loving memory of Jimmy the Ice Cream Man

The Ice Cream Man's coming
Wait up! Wait up!
The Ice Cream Man's coming
Please wait up for me

Some fam'lies had freezers, enormous in size
with tons of vanilla stored up inside
To those kids truck bells bring nothing but sighs
and their well-meaning parents don't realize
they're depriving their kids of a childhood prize.

But to me and my gang--Ice Cream in trucks are a special treat
And To get any we depend on our feet

The thrill of the chase may come at any time
You've got to find your mom to get another dime

If you can't find her you're plain out of luck
And you'll just have to wait for the next Ice Cream Truck

The Ice Cream Man's coming
Wait up! Wait up!
The Ice Cream Man's coming
Please wait up for me

I have a close friend who started up just last summr as a second income, he seems to like it...I can't get a good feel for how much money he's making but, he has a pretty succesful regular job and is doing this as well....I think its a decent part time gig with tax benefits (wink wink)
