Why do so many elected officials think they are above the law?

term limits please, that lifetime of influence will diminish

Stevens, the first sitting U.S. senator to face federal indictment since 1993, has been dogged by a federal investigation into his home renovation project and whether he pushed for fishing legislation that also benefited his son, an Alaska lobbyist.
From May 1999 to August 2007, prosecutors said, the 84-year-old senator concealed "his continuing receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of things of value from a private corporation."
The indictment unsealed Tuesday says the items included: home improvements to his vacation home in Alaska, including a new first floor, garage, wraparound deck, plumbing, electrical wiring; as well as a Viking gas grill, furniture and tools. He also was accused of failing to report swapping an old Ford for a new Land Rover to be driven by one of his children.

It's getting harder and harder to vote people out due to the drawing of districts, so if they have to lead them out by handcuffs, thats fine with me.

I know he is a senator and doesn't have a district, but I'm just glad he will be gone.

I agree about the term limits...I'm beginning to think there should be age limits too..Old senile farts in their 80's and 90's don't really belong on Capital Hill either....Good riddance to Teddy

Most of them aren't as blatantly crooked as Stevens is alleged to have been. And even those that are usually get re-elected (see William Jefferson).

Term limits do seem like the only answer to limit the power of this ruling class of representatives, so many of whom seem to have an undue sense of entitlement.

the whole problem is nowadays very few people are there to be public servants to be watchful oversight for the country at large.....not using any chance they get telling the country, state, county, city whoever at large what they should and shouldn't be doing......

its all about their vested interests, who got them there, and being a powerful figure, being deciders for the people.....

many are rich family failures in the real world that move to the political world....dubya a great example of this

and most of the people making the real important decisions at the federal level especially are unelected officials in the revolving door between corporations and government

PNAC and their involvement with the iraq invasion

our current treasury secretary for instance that is bailing out FNM and such is ex CEO of goldman sachs i'm sure he's looking out for the interests of you the average joe

Wouldn't they be under pressure to steal more and faster?

LMAO. That's one way of looking at it. But I think that most of them really go in there with the idea of doing valuable public service, but are corrupted by the years and years of having people kiss their butts and seeing others getting theirs.

A few, like Tom Coburn stay honest and keep things in perspective. But I'm afraid they are the minority.

True, but also they wouldn't know how to take advantage of the system for their own gain until they've been there for a few years.

I love Coburn.

Here's a post I threw up a few days ago:

Terms limits are a must. I was watching C-Span last night and to see someone like Senator Robert Byrd from West Virginia barely be able to speak b/c he is 91 years old, not to mention he has been a Senator since 1959, just reiterates this point. Then there is the cronyism that goes on, particularly between politicians that have been in office since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. And why the f'ck should someone like Sen. Ted Stevens from Alaska have so much power at 85 f'cking years old. Alaska is lucky to be a state and have any say, let alone send some old f'cking goat to Washington and dictate legislation.

Rot in hell Ted Stevens!

Theoretically, they would go to Washington to serve the nation and do what's right, then go back to the real world. Presently, their primary desire eventually morphs into protecting their career.

The revolving door issue may raise its ugly head however, as some politicians
will be looking for their next job.

Still, the status quo is not acceptable.
