Does the Southeastern Conference have the best assistant football coaches? I know the conference has some good ones but I can't say they are better than coaches in other conferences. They are however paid more than coaches in other leagues. The SEC paid its assistant coaches an average of $276,122 in 2010 and that will increase in 2011. The Big 12 was second at $232,685. The ACC was third and the Big 10 fourth at $187,055. Maybe winning five NC in a row says something.....I don't know....what do you think?

The SEC have great Assistants but so does the other top Conferences.... A head coach is only as good as his assistants..... Im pretty fired up about Gunter Brewer, David Lee, and Byers. I believe Ole Miss got better this off season because of them 3 hires.... Now can TY Nix get it it together? CL I believe its probably about equal.... Its easier to recruit in the SEC.... Kids want to play in the best conference.... so mid to lower teams can get very good players in the SEC...... EXample. Ole Miss has been middle of the pack 2-3 years and lower tier last year but we stilll recruit top 20 classes..... butttttt 20th in the country willl get you the 8th best class in the SEC.... Damn Im rambling...Sorry CL... SEC may have "better assistants" but the assistants have better players to coach..

The SEC has some great assistant coaches and thus are well paid. One offensive coordinator (Auburn) makes well over a million. Florida's OC makes over $700,000. Alabama and South Carolina pay their defensive coordinator over $700,000. LSU's DC may be in the same pay range.

Moma's don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys......SEC assistant football coaches pays better!

I cant believe Gus M isnt a head coach somewhere

Yeah , i agree. I think what's happening though , is that with the demise of Rich Rod and the departure of Urban Meyer i think the spread option offense is going to become a fad that quickly fades away.

You'll still see the variations of the spread where it's mostly passing like Tex Tech and Boise , but i dont think we'll see anybody that doesnt run the spread switching to it like Michigan did. ... even Auburn is supposedly going away from it now that Cam's gone.

HT, Malzaln makes more than most Division I head coaches at $1.4 million. He will get his opportunity down the road but seem very content being apart of the Auburn family. His wife and kids love living in Auburn.

Ty, Auburn's spread is a run first offense. As long as the Tigers have Malzahn as OC, that's what they will run.

Can't believe Ty Nix still has a job as a DC.

And like CL mentioned, why would Malzaln leave? He is making a ton of money, already won a MNC, and there isn't nearly as much pressure on him as an assistant.

T Bounce, I agree the spread - the way we saw it w/ Rich Rod & Meyer - will change a bit....but variations of it will continue. It certainly has it's uses....especially in lesser conferences where the D's can't keep up.

The offense that Florida State ran under Charlie Ward was, IMO, one of the best offenses you'll ever see in college football. It was essentially a pro-style attack w/ a very good running QB. If he got outside of the pocket the D was in trouble....and he could throw accurately.

Rich Rod seemed to run more of a run-first type of spread....where he had quick, smaller QBs. Meyer's was more balanced....he ideally liked to run more, but could throw it whenever needed. Rich Rod's spread would get in trouble if they fell behind (as the running spread eats more clock).

I'm interested in seeing what Holgersen does at WVU (other than get drunk and lose his job). He successfully ran that offense in the Big 12....and I'm certain it will be successful in the much softer Big East.

As far as assistant coaches in the SEC, I think the answer is a resounding 'yes'....SEC assistants ARE "better". That's why they are paid the way they do....to prevent them from leaving. Essentially, their salaries increased because there were bidding wars. Just 6 years ago it was almost unheard of for a Coordinator to make much more than $200K....now you're seeing DB coaches making around that much.

LSU, UGA, UT and Bama can be thanked for this trend, btw! When Kiffen came to UT his assistants salaries were ridiculous! Especially his dad's.

Coke and Hotty....thankyou. I have said for years Tyrone Nix is the most overrated, overblown DC in the league. Hell, if he was as good as some people claim, why did Spurrier run him off at South Carolina.

I have nothing against the guy but just got tired of all the hype that he was the next Buddy Ryan when he is average at best.

He and the used car salesman will be shown the same exit door soon.

Any SEC coordinator who gives up 542 rushing yards in a game should lose his job forever. McFadden had a record 323 rushing yards alone in that game in 07 against Nix when he was at South Carolina.

Right on Bud. All the ole ball coach wants from his DC is to get him on offense in the least amount of time. Nix couldn't do that for Spurrier. South Carolina has a pretty solid DC right now and he's paid accordingly.
