Preview: Louisville at Florida State

When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, Florida

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher and his No. 8 Seminoles quickly realized they will be playing an atypical 2-3 team when Louisville comes to town Saturday. The Cardinals opened the season with three straight losses, including a pair to then-No. 7 Auburn 31-24 and No. 6 Clemson 20-17, prompting Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher to tell reporters: “Look at the film. When (our team) looks at the film, they know it. That’s a good football team, and they know it. We’ve got to go play ball.”

The Seminoles remained undefeated with an emotional 29-24 victory over instate rival Miami (Fla.) last week — their 17th consecutive victory at home and 27th ACC win in a row — as running back Dalvin Cook continues to carry the load. The sophomore rushed for 222 yards and scored three touchdowns versus the Hurricanes and averages 158.4 yards per game — second in the country to Heisman Trophy favorite Leonard Fournette of LSU — despite battling a nagging hamstring injury. “You saw Dalvin Cook, one of the best pure players in college football. That guy is something different now,” Fisher said. “I'm glad he's on my team; I know that.” The Cardinals are coming off a 20-13 victory at North Carolina State on Oct. 3 and coach Bobby Petrino said his team "got a lot accomplished" during the off week as it prepares to face the nation's No. 10 defense in points allowed at 14 per game.

TV: Noon ET, ESPN. LINE: Florida State -7

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (2-3, 1-1 ACC): Quarterback Lamar Jackson is third in the nation among freshmen with a team-best 435 rushing yards, but has struggled passing with a 53.2 completion rate, three touchdowns and four interceptions. Junior wide receiver Jamari Staples, a transfer from UAB, made his Louisville debut versus N.C. State after recovering from a knee injury and caught two passes for 22 yards. "He really understands the offense. He is tall and fast and catches the ball away from his body and his hands,'' Petrino told reporters about the 6-4, 194-pound junior.

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (5-0, 3-0): The Seminoles featured a new wrinkle on offense as tight ends Ryan Izzo and Mavin Saunders combined to record four receptions for 63 yards versus Miami after totaling five entering the game. "(Saunders) is developing in practice, getting better and better, learning to be that guy you can count on to put in games,” Fisher said. “He and Izzo bring a whole different dimension. When this whole thing is said and done, those two are going to be really, really good players. They have size, they can block, and they can get vertical — they’re athletic and have tremendous ball skills." Quarterback Everett Golson has eight touchdowns with zero interceptions in 2015 and has thrown 151 passes without a pick dating to last season as Florida State remains the only team in the nation without an offensive turnover.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Cook averaged 43.2 yards on his eight touchdown runs this season.

2. The Cardinals had their streak of intercepting a pass end at 17 games versus N.C. State.

3. The Seminoles erased a 21-point first-half deficit to defeat Louisville 42-31 last season in the first meeting since 2002 and leads the series 13-2.

[h=1]Preview: Iowa at Northwestern[/h]When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Ryan Field, Evanston, Illinois

Iowa’s four wins against Power Five schools has the Hawkeyes in the driver’s seat in the Big Ten West, but a fifth such victory could easily propel them to their first undefeated regular season in school history. No. 17 Iowa attempts to continue its best start since 2009 and win for the first time in Evanston in eight years when it visits No. 21 Northwestern on Saturday.

The Hawkeyes defeated Illinois 29-20 last weekend to begin the conference schedule 2-0 for the third time in four years, but this season could easily have a different feel to it if they simply take care of business the rest of the way. Four of Iowa’s six remaining opponents have yet to notch their first conference win and one of the two foes with one victory (Minnesota) must travel to Iowa City on Nov. 14. The Wildcats were blanked for the first time since 2003 last weekend at No. 14 Michigan, dashing their own dreams of an unbeaten season. Northwestern has dropped three of its last four to the Hawkeyes, including its worst loss since 2010 in last year’s meeting – a 48-7 romp by the Hawkeyes to begin November.
TV: Noon ET, ABC/ESPN2. LINE: Iowa -2.5

ABOUT IOWA (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten): Running back Jordan Canzeri ranks third in the conference with 697 yards rushing and claimed Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts against Illinois, scoring twice while compiling a career-high 256 yards on a school-record 43 carries and adding two receptions for 15 more yards. The Hawkeyes are tied with Ohio State with a league-best eight interceptions, including a Big Ten-best five from cornerback Desmond King. Star defensive end Drew Ott, who led the team with 7.5 tackles for loss and was tied for first on the team with five sacks, suffered a torn ACL in his right knee last weekend and is out for the season.
ABOUT NORTHWESTERN (5-1, 1-1): Justin Jackson is fourth in the league in rushing (661 yards) and paces the Big Ten’s second-best ground game, which was held to a season-low 38 yards rushing last weekend – 210 below its previous average – including a career-low 25 from the sophomore running back. Defensive end Deonte Gibson was one of the few bright spots for the Wildcats, registering 2.5 sacks to move into a tie for the eighth-most in school history with 11. Northwestern lost Matthew Harris indefinitely after the starting cornerback suffered “a couple of broken bones in his face” upon taking a knee to the head during the second half of last weekend’s loss.

EXTRA POINTS
1. Northwestern and Iowa are meeting as ranked teams for the first time since 1996, when the Wildcats pounded the Hawkeyes 40-13 en route to a share of the Big Ten title.
2. Iowa is one of only three FBS schools that has allowed only one rushing touchdown this season.
3. Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz has 121 wins as a member of the Big Ten, one shy of matching Lloyd Carr for eighth place all-time. Ferentz also needs one more victory to break a tie with John Cooper (70) for the eighth-most league victories.

[h=1]Preview: Mississippi at Memphis[/h]When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, Tennessee

Two of the top five offenses in the nation will square off Saturday when No. 12 Ole Miss visits No. 22 Memphis in an intriguing matchup between two teams that have been held below 40 points a combined three times all season. The Tigers are fourth in the country in points per game (47.8), while the Rebels are fifth (46.8).

Memphis has been one of the biggest surprises in the country, posting at least 50 points in wins over Cincinnati and Kansas and rallying from a poor start its last time out, when it overcame a 10-0 deficit to top USF 24-17. "It's a quality, quality football team and they're playing with great confidence," Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said. "And they have what a lot of us desire in a really sound, good quarterback [in Paxton Lynch]. He's one of the better ones I've seen on film." Of course, the Rebels have a quality quarterback of their own in Chad Kelly, who passed for a career-high 384 yards in last week's 52-3 triumph against New Mexico State. Still, Laquon Treadwell, who made an acrobatic touchdown catch in the victory, told reporters that Ole Miss "can get so much better."

TV: Noon ET, ABC. LINE: Ole Miss -10.5

ABOUT OLE MISS (5-1): The Rebels are facing a ranked opponent on the road for the third time this season with the two previous games (a thrilling win at Alabama and a pummeling at Florida) providing very different results. This time around, Ole Miss certainly will rely on the combination of Kelly and Treadwell, who has 35 receptions (nearly twice as much as any of his teammates) and posted a season-high 136 receiving yards on eight grabs the last time out. On the downside, Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil - a player the team hoped would be reinstated for this contest - will not be eligible until next week's matchup at Texas A&M.

ABOUT MEMPHIS (5-0): Memphis is riding a 12-game winning streak - the third-longest active run in the country - and has had 15 days to prepare for this contest. Lynch has surpassed 300 yards passing in each of the last four games and has 10 touchdowns without an interception on the season. The Tigers have been particularly efficient on third and fourth downs this year, converting 47.2 percent of their third downs (14th nationally) and 5-of-6 fourth downs (10th nationally).

EXTRA POINTS

1. Ole Miss topped Memphis, 24-3, last season, holding the Tigers to 104 yards of offense.

2. The Tigers have committed only four turnovers all season.

3. The Rebels lead the SEC with nine interceptions.

[h=1]Preview: Pittsburgh at Georgia Tech[/h]When: 12:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Bobby Dodd Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia

Teams headed in opposite directions get together Saturday when surging Pittsburgh visits stumbling Georgia Tech in an ACC Coastal contest. The Panthers achieved their first 4-1 start since 2009 with a 26-19 victory over Virginia last week, while Georgia Tech was thumped by No. 6 Clemson 43-24 to extend its losing streak to four games – its longest since 1996.

Pittsburgh jumped to an early 14-point lead against the Cavaliers but needed a defensive stand at midfield late in the fourth quarter to preserve the win. Despite the Panthers having only one double-digit winning season since 1982 and a reputation for finding ways to lose close games, first-year coach Pat Narduzzi said this week those days are over. “(Virginia) hit a pass on us and some of our kids start to go `Oh no, here we go again," Narduzzi explained. “We're not going back that way. We're not taking that route and kids believe.” Keeping the belief is becoming much more difficult for Georgia Tech, which managed only 71 yards rushing in its loss to the Tigers, its fewest since gaining 79 yards on the ground against Gardner-Webb in coach Paul Johnson's debut season of 2008.

TV: 12:30 p.m. ET, ACC Network. LINE: Georgia Tech -3.5

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (4-1, 2-0 ACC): Narduzzi's defense ranks seventh in FBS in yards allowed (264.6), third in sacks (21), 12th in yards per rush (2.88) and sixth in rush yards per game (84.8). Quarterback Nate Peterman, who threw for 222 yards against the Cavaliers, has completed 60-of-90 passes for 760 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions. Redshirt freshman Qadree Ollison has run for 476 yards and 6.5 yards per carry while wideout Tyler Boyd has 33 catches for 328 yards and two scores.

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (2-4, 0-3): Johnson let out his frustrations after his team, which entered last week’s game averaging 311.8 yards rushing, rushed for just 15 yards in the second half. "I've never experienced a year like this in my coaching career, being as inept as we are," Johnson said. "It's one thing to be physically dominated. It's another thing to not even give yourselves a chance. Junior quarterback Justin Thomas has thrown for nine TDs and run for five more while running backs Patrick Skov and Marcus Marshall have combined for 603 yards and nine total scores.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Georgia Tech ran for 465 yards and recovered six fumbles in a 56-28 rout of Pittsburgh last season, but the Panthers lead the all-time series 5-4.

2. Ollison has run for 357 yards and 8.1 yards per carry in the second halves of games this season – both tops in the ACC (minimum 30 attempts).

3. The Yellow Jackets' losses have come to teams with a combined 19-3 record (Notre Dame, Duke, North Carolina, Clemson).

[h=1]Preview: Michigan State at Michigan[/h]When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Michigan has pushed its way back into the national spotlight with three straight shutouts and looks to continue its impressive run when fourth-ranked Michigan State visits for a Big Ten showdown on Saturday. The 14th-ranked Wolverines have allowed only 14 points total in five consecutive victories since losing to Utah in first-year coach Jim Harbaugh’s debut on Sept. 3.

It’s the first time Michigan has strung together three straight shutouts in the same season since 1980 and the Wolverines stand second in the nation in total defense (181.3 yards per game). That unit will be challenged by a Michigan State squad which has won 10 consecutive games and is led by quarterback Connor Cook, who is 29-3 as a starter in his career – 18-1 against Big Ten schools. The Spartans are averaging almost 400 yards of offense and have won six of the last seven games in the series. “We need to play better at certain points,” Michigan State Mark Dantonio told reporters. “But we are undefeated, we’ve found a way to win football games; that’s the bottom line.”

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Michigan –8

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten): The Spartans hope to get standout left tackle Jack Conklin (knee) and tight end Josiah Price (leg, four touchdowns) back for Michigan, but running back Madre London (ankle) is out indefinitely. Tailback Delton Williams, who was expecting to redshirt, has been activated to back up starter LJ Scott (418 rushing yards, six TDs) along with Gerald Holmes. Cook has thrown for 12 touchdowns with only two interceptions this year and his top target is Aaron Burbridge (34 catches, 560 yards, four TDs).

ABOUT MICHIGAN (5-1, 2-0): The Wolverines have coupled their stingy defense with a balanced offense that is averaging 201.3 yards rushing and 189.2 through the air. Jake Rudock tossed three interceptions in the opener at Utah and has three in five games since while completing 62 percent of his passes overall and De’Veon Smith (390 yards rushing) leads the ground attack. Linebacker Joe Bolden keys a balanced defense with 38 tackles while lineman Willie Henry had two of his four sacks against Northwestern last week in a 38-0 win.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Wolverines WR Jehu Chesson, who took the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown last week, was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week.

2. Michigan State LB Riley Bullough boasts a team-high 55 tackles – tied for third in the Big Ten – and three sacks.

3. The Spartans have scored at least 24 points in 21 straight games, tied with Baylor for the longest such streak in FBS.

[h=1]Preview: Virginia Tech at Miami[/h]When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Sun Life Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida

Two teams looking to turn their seasons in a positive direction meet in a key ACC contest when Virginia Tech visits Miami (Fla.) on Saturday afternoon. Miami comes in off two straight tough road losses, including a 29-24 defeat against No. 8 Florida State last week, while the Hokies go for their second consecutive victory after dropping two in a row.

Virginia Tech took care of North Carolina State 28-13 last Saturday and could see starting quarterback Michael Brewer return to the lineup after missing five games with a broken collarbone. The Hokies have allowed 30 points total and recorded eight sacks in its first two league games and will need a similar effort when they take on Miami’s offense, led by quarterback Brad Kaaya. The sophomore signal-caller has posted 1,499 yards passing to go along with eight touchdown passes and just one interception. The Hurricanes must get a better effort from their defense, which permitted 985 yards combined the last two games – 415 on the ground – and 63 points.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU. LINE: Miami -6

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (3-3, 1-1 ACC): Brenden Motley has performed well in Brewer’s absence, especially last week when he completed 14-of-28 passes for 158 yards and three scoring strikes. Whoever plays Saturday will be looking for talented sophomore Isaiah Ford, who has posted 421 yards and six touchdowns receiving – both tops in the ACC. The Hokies will need a big effort from freshman running back Travon McMillian (319 yards, 7.4 per carry) and a defense that boasts 13 takeaways (seven interceptions).

ABOUT MIAMI (3-2, 0-1): Kaaya threw for 405 yards in the loss at Florida State last week and has tossed only four interceptions in his last 12 contests after being picked off nine times in the first six games of his career. Receiver Stacy Coley was named ACC Receiver of the Week Monday after registering career highs with seven catches for 139 yards while Rashawn Scott boasts 29 receptions for 415 yards. Leading rusher Joseph Yearby was held to 33 yards on the ground last week after three straight 100-yard games.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Miami K Michael Badgley stands second in the ACC in scoring with 13 field goals in 16 opportunities.

2. Virginia Tech CB Chuck Clark is tied for third in the ACC with 8.5 tackles per contest.

3. The Hurricanes (plus-9) and the Hokies (plus-6) are the top two teams in the ACC in turnover margin.

[h=1]Preview: Oklahoma at Kansas State[/h]When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium, Manhattan, Kansas

Kansas State feels like it should be undefeated heading into Saturday's Big 12 home game against No. 19 Oklahoma. The Wildcats have squandered double-digit leads in back-to-back games, losing to undefeated Oklahoma State and TCU on late scores.

"We're just tired of losing," defensive tackle Travis Britz told The Wichita Eagle. "We have lost twice now in two games we feel like we should have won. I feel like we are just eager to get back out there and prove we aren't this 3-2 team. We should be a 5-0 team going to be a 6-0 team." The Wildcats used a strong running game to build leads in both of those games but couldn't maintain success on the ground in the second halves. The Sooners couldn't stop the run last week, giving up 313 yards to rival Texas on the way to a 24-17 loss. "(Kansas State will) utilize the extra guy in carrying the ball with their quarterback," Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops told the media. "That's always going to put stress on your defense."
TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: Oklahoma -4.5

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (4-1, 1-1 Big 12): Baker Mayfield (108-of-163 for 1,593 yards, 14 TDs and three INT) leads the league with a 66.3 percent completion rate and is third in total offense (345.2). He has four rushing TDs and Samaje Perine (364 yards) adds three scores on the ground. Sterling Shepard (26 catches, 416 yards, three TDs) and Dede Westbrook (21 catches, 307 yards, one TD) have been Mayfield's favorite targets, although nine different Sooners have caught TD passes.
ABOUT KANSAS STATE (3-2, 0-2): Quarterback Joe Hubener (826 yards passing, four TDs) has 224 rushing yards and six scores after a 111-yard, four-TD performance against TCU. An improving offensive line has helped the ground game get going and the Wildcats will continue to split carries between Justin Silmon (282 yards, two TDs) and Charles Jones (162 yards, three TDs). The Kansas State defense has allowed 22 plays of at least 20 yards, including 86-, 69-, 55- and 32-yard touchdowns by TCU.

EXTRA POINTS
1. Oklahoma has won all five trips to Kansas State by double digits under coach Bob Stoops.
2. The Sooners are 15-1 in the game it plays after the Texas game under Stoops.
3. Kansas State had won 49 straight games when leading at halftime - the longest NCAA streak at the time - until its loss to Oklahoma State two weeks ago.

[h=1]Preview: Alabama at Texas A&M[/h]When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Kyle Field, College Station, Texas

Texas A&M is undefeated in 2015 and cruising along, but few can forget what happened the last time it faced Alabama. The 10th-ranked Aggies will try to get some revenge and earn another key SEC West victory when they host the ninth-ranked Crimson Tide on Saturday.

The 2014 season is one many around Texas A&M would like to forget, and a 59-0 loss at Alabama provided the lowlight. "We just had a crazy game where things went right for us and not much went right for them," Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban told reporters this week in reference to that blowout. That loss encouraged the Aggies to make a change at quarterback with Kyle Allen stepping in, and the sophomore is coming into his own after less than a year as the starter. “What we did from a chronological standpoint immediately after that, was changes in personnel,” Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin told reporters. “Probably the biggest thing that came out of that. There were guys in critical roles that were replaced.”

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: Alabama -4

ABOUT ALABAMA (5-1, 2-1 SEC): The Crimson Tide will be going up against a different offensive system after rolling over a pair of teams that play a slower pace in Georgia and Arkansas. Alabama failed to contain an up-tempo attack in a loss to Ole Miss earlier this season and struggled with Texas A&M when Johnny Maziel was running Kevin Sumlin’s offense to perfection in previous seasons. “It's going to be a real challenge for us to be able to cover them and keep them cut off and not give them plays down the field," Saban told reporters.

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (5-0, 2-0):
Allen was at his best in the first two SEC games and totaled 680 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in wins over Arkansas and Mississippi State. The sophomore, who took over as a freshman when Kenny Hill was replaced following the Alabama loss last season, is completing 64 percent of his passes with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions. Allen is also second on the team in rushing behind Tra Carson, who has gone over 100 yards in two of the last three games.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Alabama freshman QB Blake Barnett was hospitalized for three days earlier in the week for an undisclosed reason.

2. The Aggies are attempting to secure their first 6-0 start since 1994.

3. Crimson Tide RB Derrick Henry has at least one TD in each of the first six games.

[h=1]Preview: Vanderbilt at South Carolina[/h]When: 4:00 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, South Carolina

South Carolina begins a new era Saturday when the Gamecocks host Vanderbilt in their first game since legendary coach Steve Spurrier abruptly announced his resignation. The Gamecocks aim for their seventh straight win over the Commodores in interim coach Shawn Elliott’s debut at the helm.

Spurrier called it quits Tuesday in the midst of South Carolina’s worst start since the 1999 team went 0-11. "The last several years as I’ve traveled around the country and visiting guys, I always get asked, ‘How much longer are you going to coach?’" Spurrier told reporters. “My answer is always the same. As long as we keep winning. … It’s time for me to get out of the way and let someone else have a go at it.” Both teams are looking for their first win in SEC play. The Gamecocks are coming off a 45-24 loss at LSU in a game that was moved from Columbia, S.C., to Baton Rouge, La., because of flooding in South Carolina, while the Commodores had last week off.
TV: 4 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: South Carolina -2.5.

ABOUT VANDERBILT (2-3, 0-2 SEC): The Commodores have won two of their last three games – albeit against Austin Peay and Middle Tennessee – with a gritty showing at Ole Miss sandwiched between. Vanderbilt’s defense has been impressive, holding all five opponents below their season average for scoring and total yards, and is especially stingy against the run. The offense is much improved from a year ago with dual-threat quarterback Johnny McCrary at the helm but has to produce more consistently against tougher competition.
ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (2-4, 0-4): The Gamecocks have had a revolving door at quarterback with Connor Mitch, Lorenzo Nunez and Perry Orth each making two starts. Mitch (shoulder) could return to action Saturday, but Orth and redshirt freshman Michael Scarnecchia are the top two quarterbacks listed on this week’s depth chart. It might not matter who is under center if the Gamecocks’ defense doesn’t improve, especially against the run – South Carolina allows 428 total yards per game, including 207.7 on the ground.

EXTRA POINTS
1. South Carolina has trailed at halftime in all six games this season.
2. Vanderbilt’s defense leads the SEC in the red zone, allowing points just 71 percent of the time, and has held opponents to 28 percent on third down, second-best in the SEC.
3. South Carolina WR Pharoh Cooper needs 11 receptions and 137 receiving yards to enter the top 10 on the program’s career list in each category.

[h=1]Preview: Florida at Louisiana State[/h]When: 7:00 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

A daunting challenge already awaited Florida when the 11th-ranked Gators visit No. 5 LSU on Saturday in a showdown of SEC division leaders, but the task got much tougher when freshman quarterback Will Grier was suspended for the remainder of the season Monday. Not having Grier, who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, is a blow to the Florida offense, and the Gators’ defense will have its hands full trying to slow down sophomore Leonard Fournette -- the nation’s leading rusher.

Fournette has rushed for 1,022 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 8.6 yards per carry, leading a LSU rushing attack that sits third in the nation with 346.4 yards per contest. But the Tigers showed more diversity on offense in last week’s 45-24 victory over South Carolina, getting a career day from quarterback Brandon Harris while Derrius Guice and Darrel Williams combined to rush for 222 yards and three scores. The Gators will present the strongest challenge the Tigers have faced to date, giving up just 14.3 points per game (second in the SEC) and smothering Missouri in last week’s 21-3 victory. Sophomore Treon Harris, who started Florida’s final six games in 2014 along with this year’s opener, takes over for Grier, who had passed for 10 touchdowns while completing 65.8 percent of his passes.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: LSU --9.5

ABOUT FLORIDA (6-0, 4-0 SEC): Grier averaged 200.7 passing yards per game while helping launch the Gators to the top of the SEC East, and there figures to be a significant drop-off to Harris, who completed 49.6 percent of his attempts in 2014. Running back Kelvin Taylor has recovered from a slow start, averaging 94.7 yards per contest in his past three games with four touchdowns. Defensive linemen Jonathan Bullard (4.5 sacks), Alex McCalister (four) and Joey Ivie (3.45) lead a defense that has held four opponents to 13 points or less.

ABOUT LSU (5-0, 3-0 SEC): Guice earned SEC freshman of the week honors while rushing for 161 yards against South Carolina, but Fournette is the focal point as he continues to put together an epic season. Fournette is the fastest player in SEC history to top 1,000 rushing yards after finishing with 158 on 20 carries a week ago, and Brandon Harris comes in after completing 18-of-28 passes for a career-best 228 passing yards. Linebackers Kendell Beckwith and Deion Jones have combined for 64 tackles, but the Tigers have given up 20 points in each of their past four contests.

EXTRA POINTS

1. LSU finished with 624 yards of total offense last week, its third-highest total against a SEC opponent since 1960.

2. Florida's Harris is 19-of-27 passing for 269 yards and two touchdowns in four games this season.

3. The Gators lead the SEC and rank tied for eighth nationally in turnover margin (plus-8) while the Tigers are second in the league and tied for 11th in the country (plus-6).

[h=1]Preview: Southern California at Notre Dame[/h]When: 7:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend, Indiana

The USC-Notre Dame game is annually a highlight for each of the two programs, though the battle on the field is being overshadowed a bit by some off-the-field turmoil. The Trojans will play their first game under interim coach Clay Helton after the firing of Steve Sarkisian when they visit the Fighting Irish on Saturday.

Sarkisian is reportedly battling an alcohol addiction, and several alcohol-related incidents led to his being dismissed early this week. USC, which has dropped two of its last three games, is looking to move on quickly and the players are trying to keep the focus on the field. "Obviously, (Sarkisian's) dealing with some tough stuff right now, but I wish him nothing but the best,” Trojans quarterback Cody Kessler told ESPN.com “…We're still going to support him as he goes through the next steps he takes, but our main focus right now is getting back out there. We still have a game Saturday." Notre Dame bounced back nicely from its first loss by cruising past Navy 41-24 last weekend and is trying to stay in the hunt for a College Football Playoff berth.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC. LINE: Notre Dame -6.5

ABOUT USC (3-2): Kessler is coming off his worst performance of the season and was held to 156 yards passing with no touchdowns and two interceptions in a 17-12 home loss to Washington last week. The Trojans averaged 46.8 points in their first four games but committed three turnovers and went 1-of-13 on third downs against the Huskies. Kessler was much sharper against the Fighting Irish last season, when he threw for 372 yards and six touchdowns in a 49-14 USC win.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (5-1):
The Fighting Irish are a different team than last season with DeShone Kinzer now guiding the offense at quarterback and C.J. Prosise stepping up as the lead running back. “For us, in particular, after getting beat last year out there, it's been one that we have really set our eyes on in terms of wanting to eradicate that in our minds in terms of that game itself,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly told reporters. Kinzer has thrown for at least one touchdown and rushed for one in each of the last three games and went 22-for-30 for 281 yards against Navy last week.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Notre Dame (502.7) is trying to average over 500 yards of total offense for the first time since 1970.

2. The Fighting Irish have taken three of the last five in the series.

3. Kessler owns just two multi-interception games in his career.

[h=1]Preview: Arizona State at Utah[/h]When: 10:00 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City, Utah

Seventh-ranked Utah is the lone unbeaten Pac-12 program but faces a team it traditionally struggles against when it hosts Arizona State on Saturday. The Utes are making a surprise run at cracking the four-team College Football Playoff but the Sun Devils are certainly capable of denting those plans as they seek to defeat Utah for the 12th consecutive time.

The Utes forced six turnovers in last Saturday's victory over California and picked off NFL quarterback prospect Jared Goff five times, which caught the attention of Arizona State senior quarterback Mike Bercovici. "Utah's a very opportunistic football team," Bercovici said in a press conference. "They've done a great job thus far. They play with energy, and they play with passion, and that's something that we've got to match and surpass. But the reality is we've got to focus on ourselves, do what we need to do." The Utes rely on standout senior running back Devontae Booker, who racked up 222 yards against Cal and has 665 on the season. “I don’t really care if it was a breakout game for me," Booker told reporters. "I was just doing my job to help my team win.”

TV:
10 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Utah -7.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (4-2, 2-1 Pac-12): Bercovici has passed for 1,604 yards and has an impressive touchdown-to-interception ratio of 14-to-4. Sophomore running back Demario Richards has rushed for 529 yards and four scores, while six different players have more than 200 receiving yards. Freshman safety Kareem Orr and senior safety Jordan Simone share the team lead of two interceptions while Simone has a team-high 51 tackles and is followed by junior outside linebacker Salamo Fiso (team-high 10.5 tackles for loss) with 50.

ABOUT UTAH (5-0, 2-0): Booker, in his second season with the Utes, has 2,177 career yards and is one of just 13 players in school history to top 2,000 rushing yards. Senior quarterback Travis Wilson has passed for 683 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions and also has three rushing scores while averaging 7.1 yards per carry. The Utes have forced 17 turnovers (12 interceptions, five fumbles) with sophomore free safety Marcus Williams (four) and junior cornerback Dominique Hatfield (three) combining for seven interceptions while junior defensive end Pita Taumoepenu has a team-leading four sacks.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Arizona State is 20-6 against the Utes and won last season's matchup 19-16 in overtime.

2. Utah freshman Britain Covey leads the Pac-12 with a 16.9 punt-return average.

3. Sun Devils senior WR D.J. Foster has caught at least one pass in 46 consecutive games, two shy of the Pac-12 record held by USC's Kareem Kelly (1999-2002).

[h=1]Preview: Nebraska at Minnesota[/h]When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: TCF Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minnesota

A surprising triumph over Nebraska has been the signature victory for Minnesota in each of the last two years en route to back-to-back eight-win seasons. The host Golden Gophers hope another victory over the Cornhuskers on Saturday can keep the program on an upward trajectory as they seek their third straight win in this series for the first time since 1951-54.

Minnesota ended a 16-game losing streak to Nebraska with a 34-23 home win two years ago and topped itself last season by overcoming a 14-point halftime deficit in a 28-24 victory in Lincoln. The Gophers moved to 4-2 or better for the fourth time in as many years last week with their most convincing triumph of the season – a 41-13 rout at Purdue – after winning by exactly three points in each of their first three victories. While Minnesota has won three of its four games that were decided by six points or fewer, Nebraska fell to 0-4 in such contests following last Saturday’s 23-21 home loss to Wisconsin. The Cornhuskers have lost those four games by a total of 11 points with each opponent scoring on its final offensive play. "I'd have to look back a ways, but I don't think I've really seen this before,” first-year Nebraska coach Mike Riley told reporters.
TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2. LINE: Minnesota -2

ABOUT NEBRASKA (2-4, 0-2 Big Ten): Most of the Cornhuskers’ inability to win close games this season can be attributed to two key areas: penalties (58, second-most in FBS) and pass defense (348.5 yards, worst in FBS). Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. has regressed as well since throwing for 11 touchdowns, completing 58.9 percent of his throws and averaging 316.5 passing yards in non-conference action. He has connected on only 21 of his last 59 attempts for a total of 234 yards and one TD in Big Ten play. Fullback Andy Janovich has emerged as a bit of a folk hero, however, leading the team with 170 yards rushing over the last three games after amassing six on three career carries entering the season.
ABOUT MINNESOTA (4-2, 1-1): The Gophers entered last weekend as the conference’s worst rushing and FBS’ second-lowest scoring offense, but gashed Purdue for a season-high 326 yards on the ground and 41 consecutive points to turn the game into a rout. Freshman running back Shannon Brooks led the effort, rushing for a season-high 176 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. “Shannon Brooks is going to be a heck of a back; he reminds me of Marion Barber. He is fast and he hits the holes,” Minnesota coach Jerry Kill told reporters following the game.

EXTRA POINTS
1. Minnesota junior QB Mitch Leidner has yet to throw for more than 264 yards in his 28-game career, while Armstrong has topped that mark four times in 2015 alone.
2. Nebraska has allowed seven total points before halftime in the past three games combined, but 51 after the break. 3. The Gophers have 11 players listed as questionable or out, but expect S Damarius Travis, DL Scott Ekpe and DL Gaelin Elmore to return from injury for this contest.

[h=1]Preview: South Florida at Connecticut[/h]When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Rentschler Field, East Hartford, Connecticut

Connecticut's improving defense will be put to the test on Saturday, when its faces South Florida and running back Marlon Mack in an AAC contest. Mack rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns last week as the Bulls manhandled Syracuse in their best performance of the season.

Both teams ended three-game slides last week as UConn dominated UCF 40-13 in a conference game, getting a passing and rushing touchdown from quarterback Bryant Shirreffs. With the win, the Huskies surpassed their victory total from a season ago and climbed to 37th in the nation in total defense. USF's win over Syracuse was its first over a Power Five team in the 29-game tenure of coach Willie Taggart. The Bulls have won three straight in the series.

TV: Noon ET, ESPNU. LINE: UConn - 2.5

ABOUT USF (2-3, 0-1 AAC): Mack gained 103 yards in last year's 17-14 win over the Huskies in a sloppy contest played in the rain at South Florida. Mack finished second in the AAC in rushing last season and currently is second this year to Navy's Keenan Reynolds with 576 yards. Sophomore quarterback Quinton Flowers passed for a career-best 259 yards with two touchdowns against the Orange last week.

ABOUT UCONN (3-3, 1-1): Coach Bob Diaco compared USF's offense to that of Navy, which defeated the Huskies 28-18 earlier in the season. A form of the triple option, it will be the third such offense the Huskies have faced on the season and they've fared relatively well, allowing 45 points in the two contests while winning once. UConn's defense is ranked 27th in the nation in scoring and its offense piled up 40 points last week, its most since the final game of the 2013 season.

EXTRA POINTS

1. USF is 0-2 on the road.

2. The Bulls have won the last three meetings by an average of 4.3 points.

3. UConn CB Jhavon Williams, an NFL prospect, has three interceptions - all setting up scores on the road.

[h=1]Preview: Syracuse at Virginia[/h]When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Scott Stadium, Charlottesville, Virginia

Syracuse and Virginia each is trending in the wrong direction, although Saturday's affair on the Cavaliers' home field offers a chance for both ACC programs to right the ship. Both teams have lost two games in a row with the Orange allowing 79 points in those two contests, while the Cavaliers have given up 82 points during their two-game skid.

"What we've done the last couple weeks is unacceptable," Syracuse defensive line coach Tim Daoust said to reporters this week. The Orange lost by three touchdowns to USF last weekend as they were gashed on the ground by Bulls tailback Marlon Mack. After giving up 184 yards (9.2 per attempt) and two scores to Mack, Syracuse hopes for more success against a Cavaliers squad that averages only 3.3 yards per carry. "That’s football,” Virginia center Jackson Matteo said to reporters. “Even the best offensive units don’t produce at times."

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN3.com, RSN. LINE: Virginia -7

ABOUT SYRACUSE (3-2, 1-0 ACC): Orange freshman Eric Dungey passed for a season-high 232 yards and two touchdowns in last week's loss to the Bulls after missing most of the previous two games with a head injury. Syracuse has used four quarterbacks in total this year with the quartet combining to throw 11 TDs to seven different players. The Orange's balanced passing attack is complemented by a running game that has been up and down this season, although last week was a poor performance as Dungey led the team with 31 yards on the ground.

ABOUT VIRGINIA (1-4, 0-1): The Cavaliers have faced a formidable schedule with matchups against UCLA, Notre Dame, Boise State and Pittsburgh - all losses - bookending a win against FCS powerhouse William & Mary. Matt Johns was excellent against the Fighting Irish last month, but he has thrown seven touchdowns and seven interceptions in the other four games and has hovered around 50 percent completions in each of his last two contests. "We're very close. It's just a matter of two or three plays," noted Johns, who could look to get the ball to Albert Reid after the junior running back sparked the team with a 71-yard run in last week's 26-19 defeat against Pittsburgh.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Syracuse has committed the second-fewest penalties in the conference (23).

2. The schools have met four previous times, with the Orange winning twice in the 1970's and the Cavaliers prevailing in 2004 and 2005.

3. Only three wideouts in the ACC are averaging more yards per game than Virginia's Canaan Severin (69.6).

[h=1]Preview: Rutgers at Indiana[/h]When: 3:30 PM ET, Saturday, October 17, 2015
Where: Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, Indiana

Indiana looks to snap a two-game losing streak Saturday when it hosts Rutgers in a battle of two teams still looking for their first conference victory of the season. The Hoosiers started 4-0 but have dropped their first two Big Ten contests, narrowly falling to No. 1 Ohio State before last week's blowout loss at Penn State.

The Scarlet Knights are likely feeling better about themselves after last week's last-minute loss to No. 4 Michigan State that saw Rutgers rally from a 10-point second-half deficit before falling. The return of wide receiver Leonte Carroo was a big spark for the Scarlet Knights, who get coach Kyle Flood back from a three-game suspension for violating a university compliance policy. Carroo had seven catches for 134 yards and three scores against the Spartans, and he'll need that same kind of production against an Indiana team that sports a potent offense. Unfortunately for coach Kevin Wilson, he's unsure of who will be calling the signals for the Hoosiers' attack this week, with starter Nate Sudfeld and backup Zander Diamont questionable with injuries.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: None

ABOUT RUTGERS (2-3, 0-2 Big Ten): Having to stay away from the team on game days for three straight weeks wasn't easy for Flood, who could run practices throughout the week. Flood said he's happy with how the team was run under interim coach Norries Wilson and offensive coordinator Ben McDaniels in his absence. "I thought those guys made good decisions," Flood told reporters. "I'm not really into second-guessing what the decisions were. I thought all the decisions they made were really in line with what I would have done had I been at the games."

ABOUT INDIANA (4-2, 0-2): While the Hoosiers' offense is finding it hard to score points with a constant rotation at quarterback, the defense has seen its early season success hard to sustain, giving up 31.5 points a game in Big Ten play. Some of it has to do with playing higher-quality opponents in league play, but some of it is just Indiana needing to, as defensive end Nick Mangieri put it to reporters "be more consistent. We've done a lot of things well. I just think we need to do those things more often and not let mistakes get in the way."

EXTRA POINTS

1. Rutgers has outrushed its opponent four times in five games, averaging 197 yards on the ground.

2. Indiana leads the Big Ten and is tied for sixth nationally in turnover margin at plus-nine.

3. Hoosiers WR Ricky Jones is fourth in the Big Ten, averaging 19.4 yards per catch.
