Yonkers: Saturday 8/30 Analysis
By Matt Rose

MEET STATS: 260 - 756 / $1324.70 BEST BETS: 44 - 62 / $140.20

Best Bet: SAFE HARBOR (9th)

Spot Play: MONTANA PABLO A (2nd)

Race 1

(2) GAMBLER'S TALE finds his softest spot in some time and the veteran should get back on track versus these. (3) SMOKEALITTLESMOKE was in a different zip code throughout upon arrival last week but the Fanning trainee will be much closer to the action tonight. (4) LISTOWEL is capable of stepping it up every once in a while.

Race 2

(4) MONTANA PABLO A closed very crisply last week from a tough spot; Cassar trainee is way, way overdue. (3) SHORTSTACKED returns to Goodell and was a winner with these three back; big threat here. (1) MAN HE CAN SKOOT is not a prolific winner but he'll be prominent throughout.

Race 3

(3) SIR ZIGGY'S Z TAM drops in class, finally gets a good post and he will take all sorts of tote action. That 3 for 54 record over the last two years is hard to overlook, however. (1) K SLATER also drops, lands inside and Brennan's driving again. (2) BUBBIE BOY was overbet last week and never threatened while uncovered; proceed with caution.

Race 4

(4) ROLLWITHITHARRY drops in class again off an aggressive try and Dube will surely be rolling from this spot. (6) HERE WE GO AGAIN should, yes should be leaving the gate from this spot to have his best chance at victory. (2) TOBAGO CAYS is very speedy and classy and would be no surprise here.

Race 5

(7) MCERLEAN was a strong winner at this level two back, then had no chance last out; sharp horse is stuck outside again but he may be worth a try at a price. (4) LAWGIVER HANOVER gets Sears in the bike tonight and he will probably be overbet. (1) ESPEN DE VIE has speed and the rail draw.

Race 6

(6) FRANKIES DRAGON was last week's Open winner with a gutsy uncovered performance; Sears sticks with him over two rivals and he's capable of tripping out from this spot. (8) HESTON BLUE CHIP was second best at Saratoga pacing his mile in 1:49 2/5; he would be a huge force here with a better starting spot. (3) PANCETTA is generously assigned post three after a well-deserved week off.

Race 7

(5) TAKE IT BACK TERRY made some money in the Cup & Saucer in Canada and four back he beat better than these after a perfect trip; Burke trainee gets top billing here. (3) HILARIOUS HALO has raced well in all recent efforts for Lachance and clearly the post relief will help tonight. (6) AMERICAN RAGE is sharp but he may have trouble getting involved from this spot.

Race 8

(1) RAMPAGE JACKSON stayed pacing last week and just missed after a pocket ride; Brainard trainee deserves another chance. (2) BIG N BAD kicked home nicely last week in the Open and he's been solid in all local efforts; one to beat. (3) IDEAL CHAMP has been razor-sharp in his last two victories.

Race 9

Let me see if I have this straight...(1) SAFE HARBOR drew away powerfully last out in a wicked-fast time and now he gets to drop in class, and he draws the rail to boot? This seems like one easy game. (6) DIGITAL Z TAM also drops and clearly fits with these. (5) GLASS PRINCE seems to have tailed off and Stratton bailed for a seemingly overmatched rival.

Race 10

(1) STOLEN CAR paced just evenly late following live cover last week but there's nothing special in here and the veteran is overdue. (4) DREAMLANDS ART gets some post relief and may be forwardly placed. (5) BOX CAR JOHNNIE has proven to be a very effective claim for Schlosser and he should pick up a decent share tonight.

Race 11

(3) THE REAL ONE really hasn't put in a bad effort since arriving from Quebec for Lachance and the class relief should help his cause tonight. (1) CASIMIR JITTERBUG also drops, draws best and returns to Sears; deserving favorite. (2) SHOCK IT TO 'EM raced okay here three back in his lone local appearance.

Race 12

(3) DOCTOR BUTCH gets a free ride at this level off an odds-on victory; it won't be as easy tonight but he should be able to repeat. (1) DIAMOND COWBOY will be sitting close up throughout and the Fraley trainee should be able to hit the ticket. (2) ISLAND JET returns locally and has maintained good form since the Allard purchase.

Race 10 - $20,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet (34 - 61 / $138.80): ENGINE ONE O ONE (3rd)

Spot Play: JACKS TO OPEN (5th)

Race 1

(8) TIMEWELL looks to be unstoppable at this level and is versatile. (6) MASTER JEEVES just missed to the top choice last out. The pacer will probably offer the better price and has been much better in a new barn. (5) JACKSON BERLOW is capable of cranking up a big effort out of the blue at times but is probably best used underneath.

Race 2

(8) LEX filly has a ton of ability and is to fast for the field; short price. (4) ANNETTE'S Z TAM lightly raced filly has a lot of upside and looks to be improving. (5) FOX VALLEY REDHEAD could have turned a corner last out pacing a personal best doing it nicely.

Race 3

(4) ENGINE ONE O ONE has the look of a good one. The freshman pacer just needs to mind his manners for a victory. (6) THE BIG SLEAZY gelding comes from a solid family and could show big improvement in his third lifetime start. (1a) KING OF THE SWAMP gelding gets a tough post and could have bigger things on his mind in the upcoming weeks.

Race 4

(7) GALACTIC STAR went a huge effort last race off of a very tough trip. (4) WESTERN DEAL nailed the top choice last out showing good determination; threat. (6) TIZA MOJO hasn't raced his best at the big track but a good effort and some racing luck puts him in the mix.

Race 5

(9) JACKS TO OPEN is capable of showing much better and should offer good value. (6) B FLY MCQUEEN mare has been racing gamely facing stiff competition and tries her luck against softer. (5) MY MUSCLEMAN owns some back class but will need to be driven better for a chance to hit the top spot.

Race 6

(5) SAILOR'S FORTUNE gets a big driver change and has been racing gamely. (6) WILDCAT BOBBY bounced back from a poor effort the start prior and could hit the ticket with a smooth trip. (2) BET ON HIM rarely wins but finds an inconsistent field.

Race 7

(3) SEEYOUATTHEFINISH owns a good winning percentage at this level on the year. The pacing mare should be ready for a big effort. (4) MOLLY GO LIGHTLY filly faces older and has been inconsistent but is talented enough to pull the upset. (5) GIMMEAZZZMOOCH also faces easier and will be firing early.

Race 8

(8) M A DUTY was the driver's choice and will offer a big price in a fairly wide-open race. (3) FOX VALLEY ABSOLUT looks to be in line for a great trip up close. (9) WHISTLE PIG mare is the horse to beat on paper but will probably have to do it from the back; fires late.

Race 9

(5) TIME TO ROLL will be doing that early looking to take no prisoners. (7) BEST MAN HANOVER has been super sharp off the layoff and will also be firing for position. (8) IN OVER MY HEAD could need a start off a short layoff but owns the best late kick in the race.

Race 10

(8) OUR DRAGON KING comes off a break but has been going some big efforts. (4) DONT WORRY B HAPPY was razor sharp last out just missing to a tough opponent. The pacer will have to overcome the pilot but should be considered a threat off his previous outing. (9) BIG BRAD four-year-old stallion lacked his usual pop late last out and could be waiting for the next few weeks; use caution.

Race 11

(4) RITASCAPE impeccably bred pacing mare takes a big drop in class. (5) HELLO MY DREAM filly has a ton of ability but has yet to take the next step; needs more. (3) RYLEIGH'S LILLY was dominant last out but bumps up in class. The 4-year-old could be the sleeper in the race with some racing luck.

Race 12

(7) MADOFF don't let the 6-year-old stallion's lines fool you. He is capable of beating this field at a price. (8) PRAIRIE THUNDER has been at the mercy of the pace and trip but might change things up a bit with a different pilot. (10) WHIRLWINDIPLOMACY was an easy winner last out but needs more; command a price.

Race 13

(9) SLEZEBURGERNFRIES has been knocking on the door and was the driver's choice in a tough race to handicap. (6) FOX VALLEY CUPID sophomore pacer races to his competition but could hit the top spot despite only one lifetime win. (2) SVAYA KNOWS was the driver's choice of three; big chance.

Race 4 - $75,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Race 12 – Mandatory Jackpot Hi-5 Payout ($647,331 carryover)

Best Bet: TRIXTON (9th)

Spot Play: DECRET JUSTICALE (1st)

Race 1

(7) DECRET JUSTICIALE will be my top pick to kick off the program. Hoping for a price on this Quebec invader after winning seven of 10 this season. (4) WHISKEY TAX draws inside, drops in class and has major back class. (8) DOUBLEDOWN GASS has excellent gate speed and has been a main threat in this class for many weeks.

Race 2

(4) THE SHOW RETURNS might offer a price in this consolation. She closed very strongly in her elim last week and gets a new pilot. (2) DANCIN CAROLL was charging late in the mile, but ran out of real estate. She's a good option and will offer a low price. (7) CASHAWAY comes from the Alagna barn and has missed the board once from five starts.

Race 3

(5) JET AIRWAY is the top three-year-old this season in the provincial program and draws a good post after winning three straight. (7) WESTERN VINTAGE doesn't have the best record this season, but shows quick speed, is versatile and will offer a low price. (9) DANCIN HILL continues to improve as of late and was a convincing winner last week for Zeron & Alagna.

Race 4

(7) BEACH GAL is fresh off a sub-1:50 win, comes from the Menary barn and that effort will gain her a lot of attention. (8) NAT A VIRGIN is also fresh off a win, gets Zeron back in the bike and is in top form right now. (4) PRECOCIOUS BEAUTY draws inside and has been much better in her last three.

Race 5

(3) JK SHESALADY won in effortless fashion to capture her elim with the plugs still in. Gingras elected to drive her over elim winner (2) BAND OF ANGELS, which influenced my decision. (2) BAND OF ANGELS is the other logical option in this final with Pierce aboard. She was spectacular in her elim and both fillies remain undefeated. (4) BEDROOMCONFESSIONS has a terrific record this season, is versatile and may offer a fair price.

Race 6

(9) ODYSSEUS BLUECHIP gets class relief, comes from the Johnson barn and has been knocking on the door in recent weeks. (10) SING FOR ME GEORGE will need to overcome post 10, but certainly has the speed and back class in his favour. (7) TWIN B IMPRESSIVE has hit the board in four of his last five starts. He's versatile and gets the Filion & Moreau combination.

Race 7

(3) ARTSPEAK is certainly the horse to beat with his undefeated record and comfortable score in his elim. He won in convincing fashion for trainer Alagna and pilot Zeron. (2) GO DADDY GO gets Hall of Fame connections in his corner with McIntosh & Campbell. He captured his elim, draws inside and hasn't missed the board in seven career starts. (8) LYONS AGAIN gets Gingras in the bike for the final, which influenced my decision. He has hit the board in each of his last three and is a good option for the triactor.

Race 8

(9) CHAMPAIGNE PHIL gets a new trainer in Nixon along with a new pilot in MacDonell. I'm going to play him on the training angle as this gelding shows quick speed to win this contest. (6) SCREEN THE CALL moves onto this circuit, gets Brett Miller and may offer a price. (7) MACHAL JORDAN was closing very strongly last week in this class and is capable of another big effort. Expect a price on this veteran.

Race 9

(11) TRIXTON is the Hambo winner, comes from Takter's barn and is clearly the horse to beat. (10) HARPER BLUE CHIP is the top OSS colt this season and continues to make his name present in the Grand Circuit. He'll need to overcome post 10. (9) E L TITAN went a convincing mile to begin his season for Rekila. He faces a tough task tonight, but appears ready.

Race 10

(7) FOILED AGAIN raced tremendous in his elimination to finish second. He landed in the the two-hole at the opening quarter in :25 and kicked home in :25 3/5. He's been racing well all season and is due for a winning effort. He draws well despite not winning his elim and may offer a fair price. (3) SWEET LOUT will be your favourite when the gates unfold and deserves to be. He's the top free-for-all pacer so far this season, draws well and has won 10 of 13 starts this season. He's the horse to beat in this field. (2) CLEAR VISION was the other elimination winner, draws inside and kicked home in a sizzling :25 1/5 to win by a nose. He certainly has the speed and top connections in his favour. He'll look to redeem himself after finishing second, by a nose, in last year’s rich final.

Race 11

(7) PISTON BROKE got a different type of trip with Gingras aboard last week en route to victory. With Gingras driving again this week, he'll likely be the favourite in this heavy tilt. (8) ODDS OF EQUULEUS finished a game third last week with a sizzling final frame. He has the speed, comes from Alagna's barn and a short field only increases his chances. (4) SUNSHINE BEACH drops out of the Derby and into a more suitable level. He draws inside and is a logical option for the triactor.

Race 12

(7) APPRENTICE HANOVER will get my top selection based on the class drop and his return back to this circuit. He has a solid record this season and gets Jamieson back aboard. (2) RESISTANCE FUTILE finally put his game face on last week with a sub-1:50 win. He's capable of a repeat effort with Callahan. (4) UPFRONT HOOSIERBOY draws inside, comes from the Johnson barn and drops in class.

KEY STAT: Burnley shipped 14 goals at home last season, no Championship team let in fewer

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester United look a fair price to seize three points but are unlikely to find Burnley at Turf Moor as easy to cut through as Chelsea did on the opening weekend. The Clarets face a battle to stay up, but they’re better at the back than they showed against the Blues and can keep this close.

RECOMMENDATION: Under 2.5 goals

KEY STAT: Manchester City have won four of their last six home league meetings with Stoke 3-0

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester City have won their six home Premier League clashes with Stoke by an aggregate score of 15-0 and bookmakers expect that run to continue. Stoke have disappointed so far, losing at home to Villa and drawing against ten-man Hull, so the hosts should win with some ease.

RECOMMENDATION: Man City to win 2-0

KEY STAT: Southampton have conceded seven goals in their last two visits to Upton Park

EXPERT VERDICT: West Ham were unlucky to lose to Tottenham on the opening weekend and impressed when winning 3-1 away at Crystal Palace. Southampton couldn’t find a way past West Brom last Saturday and haven’t beaten West Ham in five meetings, losing their last two trips to Upton Park.

RECOMMENDATION: West Ham

KEY STAT: Palace lost 11 of their 19 league away games last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Newcastle have beaten Crystal Palace to nil in their last four meetings and should fancy their chances of repeating the trick. The Eagles have already conceded five league goals this term and despite their celebrated great escape last season, Palace scored just 15 away goals en route to securing their safety.

RECOMMENDATION: Newcastle

KEY STAT: West Brom haven’t kept a clean sheet against Swansea in their last six meetings

EXPERT VERDICT: Garry Monk’s Swans have won both games this term, including a victory at Old Trafford, and they have a good record against West Brom, winning four of the last six league meetings between the teams. West Brom have drawn both of their opening two games and look a pedestrian outfit once again this term.

KEY STAT: Sunderland lost the fewest away games (nine) outside the top eight last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Sunderland have the strength in wide areas to exploit any teething troubles as QPR continue to adapt to a 3-5-2 formation. The Black Cats may cede control of central midfield, where Lee Cattermole will be trading tackles with Joey Barton, but should have joy down the flanks.

RECOMMENDATION: Sunderland

At the Gate - Saturday
By Mike Dempsey

It does not get much better than today’s 12-race card at Saratoga where we have four graded stakes on tap along with the two-time reigning Horse of the Year in action.

We are down to just three racing days left in the Saratoga meeting, and this is the next to last day we will be able to enjoy track announcer Tom Durkin, who will call his last race on Sunday.

The stakes action kicks off with the fifth race, the $250,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap (G2), where Wise Dan will race for the first time off a four-month break. He was forced to the sidelines with emergency colic surgery.

The gelding carries top weight of 127 and is 3-5 on the morning line, and it sure was tempting to try and beat him. I just could not find a viable option to beat him. The gelding has won 13 of his 14 career starts on turf and has run well off the bench in the past. It looks like maybe single in the last leg of the early Pick 5.

The $300,000 Prioress (G2) for three-year-old fillies drew a competitive group, five of which exit the Test (G1) which was run on Aug. 2 and won by Sweet Reason. The Todd Pletcher trained Sweet Whiskey is the 2-1 morning line favorite.

The $500,000 Forego (G1) is another good betting race, drawing a field of 10. The winner earns an automatic starting spot in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) as part of the “Win and You’re In” series of races.

Clearly Now is the one to beat but at 7-5 on the morning line is not going to offer much value. The colt won the Belmont Derby (G3) last out earning a career top speed figure. I am hoping we can get some prices underneath him.

The marquee event of the day is the $600,000 Woodward (G1), which actually is not a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race. Moreno is the 2-1 morning line favorite, and he already stamped his ticket to the Classic by winning the Whitney (G1) in gate to wire fashion on Aug. 2.

He is the lone speed in the race, but every other jockey knows that and I am expecting to see an early pace battle which could set things up for the favorite to get beat. After all, he has won just three of his 20 career starts, and anything less than the 2-1 morning line sure seems light.

My Best Plays for Saturday includes my nine strongest plays from Del Mar and Saratoga.

Here is today’s opening race from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Md Sp Wt (1:00 ET)
3 Firespike 5-2
7 Epsilon 5-1
8 Tapkee 7-2
11 Lucky Leroy Brown 7-2

Analysis: Firespike makes his third career start here after checking in a game second in his debut and then third last out in his local debut, both as the beaten favorite. Three have exited the race to run, two next out maiden winners and the winner ran fourth in the With Anticipation (G2) here yesterday. He looks capable of getting the job done here third out for Maker.

Epsilon makes his debut for the McLaughlin barn that is 18% winners (with a +ROI) with first timers. This guy is a half to six turf winners and a couple of stakes winners, top earner Alpha ()$1.8 million) The colt has sharp works on the morning tab and looks ready to fire a good one at first asking.

Wagering
WIN: #3 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 3,7 / 3,7,8,11
TRI: 3,7 / 3,7,8,11 / 3,7,8,11,12

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 10 The Forego G1 (6:14 ET)
8 Clearly Now 7-5
9 Weekend Hideaway 10-1
6 Palace 3-1
1 Capo Bastone 15-1

Analysis: Clearly Now earned a career top speed fig with a sharp win in the Belmont Sprint (G3) last out and the effort was flattered when the runner up Palace came back to win the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (G1) in his next start on Aug. 2 here. The colt has now landed in the money in 13 of his 15 career starts and has been working smartly at Woodbine over the poly since his win. The colt owns a solid pace profile throughout and looks capable of winning right back here although the price is going to be on the light side. It could be even lighter if Palace scratches as his trainer Linda Rice is thinking about skipping this race and waiting for the Vosburgh (G1) on Sept. 27.

Weekend Hideaway is coming off back-to-back wins against state breds, last out taking the field gate to wire to win the John Morrissey here going 6 1/2 furlongs. The colt has done his best running over the Spa main track, winning three of four with a second. The colt comes in here very sharp right now for the Phil Serpe barn that has been sending out live runners at the meeting.

Wagering
WIN: #8 to win at 7-5 or better.
EX: 8,9 / 1,6,8,9
TRI: 8,9 / 1,6,8,9 / 1,6,8,9,10

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Del Mar:

DMR Race 9 The Del Mar Debutante G1 (6:12 PT)
5 Sunset Glow 5-2
2 Manahatta 5-1
6 Her Emmyency 7-2
1 Seduire 8-1

Analysis: Sunset Glow returned from her overseas trip to win the Sorrento (G2) last out, dueling for the early lead and drawing off late to win by 3 1/4 lengths and earning the top last out speed fig. Two back at Royal Ascot the filly set the early fractions and finished gamely in a runner up finish on the turf in the Albany Stakes (G3). She is going to be tough here and I doubt we are going to see her 5-2 morning line, we will have to settle for less.

Manahatta dueled or the early lead and held on in the stretch despite drifting out a bit late to break her maiden in her debut for the Hollendorfer barn. She beat a couple of foes she takes on again here. The barn does solid work with juveniles and she has posted two more solid works since her unveiling. She still looks as if she has some upside and will need to move forward to get to our top pick.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 9-5 or better.
EX: 2,5 / 1,2,5,6
TRI: 2,5 / 1,2,5,6 / 1,2,5,6,8

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R4: #6 Enjoy the Show 10-1
R5: #8 Five Iron 8-1
R6: #11 Non Stop 8-1
R8: #3 Southern Honey 10-1
R9: #3 Gratitude 8-1
R10: #9 Weekend Hideaway 10-1
R10: #1 Capo Bastone 15-1
R11: #1 Long River / 1a Romansh 8-1

KEY STAT: Thirteen of Juve’s 19 away matches last season featured under 2.5 goals

EXPERT VERDICT: Massimiliano Allegri has inherited a strong squad at Juventus but it may take time for his ideas to be implemented in Turin. The champions have mainly been playing weak sides in pre-season and their opening display may lack fluency, so it could pay to anticipate a narrow victory at a stadium which saw the joint-lowest tally in Serie A last term.

RECOMMENDATION: Juventus to win 1-0
