Belmont analysis for Sat., May 2

Dave Litfin ,

Belmont Park

Belmont analysis for Sat., May 24

FIRST RACE ST MOOSE has returned in good form, posting paired 89 Beyers; may benefit from initial race over the track. SON OF A GENERAL comes off fastest race of career when claimed from May 7 return; must avoid a bounce. MOE MAN haltered from both starts this year, now coupled with RUSH NOW, who is 4-2-0 from six starts at the distance.

SECOND RACE SUAVE AND SMOOTH is lightly raced and improving; comes off best try yet first time over the track and at the distance. GINGEE is 0 for 22 but may be best of the rest. MUSIC MAID was beaten a dozen lengths by Gingee in last, gets Lasix now.

THIRD RACE SANTA ELF matched lifetime Beyer top in last, appears best if race goes to dirt. On turf, LOVEISHEARTANDSOUL relished stretch to route for maiden win last fall; victimized by slow pace in seasonal finale. TOY CANNON was blanked in 2013 while grabbing four silver medals; consistent sort fired fresh first time last year.

FOURTH RACE DAWLY has been a gem of consistency, rates edge over Parx specialist CRUSHING and hard-to-gauge MR PALMER if race goes to dirt, Otherwise, BLACK ONYX is assumed fit and ready first out since 2013 Spiral win; new trainer excels with layoff turfers. ADMIRAL PERRY boasts 90-91 Beyer tops turf, dirt & synthetic; should be peaking third out this year.

FIFTH RACE HOT SQUEEZE was toughened up with two races in April, the latest a hard-fought try in Pimlico stakes; slight edge. AESTHETIQUE left a favorable impression demolishing maidens this course last fall; threat for live outfit. FANCY BOSS may prove a prescient claim after big win on this layout vs. lesser first time back.

SIXTH RACE SAYTHREEHHAILMARY’S passed horses at each call despite some traffic in promising debut; extra ground suits. KELLY’S PRIZE repeats turf-to-dirt switch that produced a third at 14-1 last summer. MAURA’S PASS is a homebred from top barn; not meeting any world-beaters.

SEVENTH RACE DAN AND SHEILA is third off the bench and would likely have to catch REGULUS in the event of a surface switch. On turf, HYMAN ROTH may appreciate recent rains judging from 8-1 win on yielding Widener turf at this distance. MISSISSIPI DUEL is a dual seven-furlong winner on this course, and freshened since brief winter campaign.

EIGHTH RACE GROOMEDFORVICTORY likely found latest a tad short, but is 10 for 22 at today’s distance; tops in wins & earnings. COUSIN MICHAEL has been sharp in three starts since claimed; completes formidable entry. EFFINEX is back to reality after ill-advised start in the Wood Memorial. CALL FOR THE CLOCK dangerous if able to replicate his form at Aqueduct.

NINTH RACE FITFUL SKIES may catch favorable footing on rain-softened ground after useful effort in too-short Jenny Wiley to begin the season; reprise of E.P. Taylor can get it. ABACO also favored by recent rains, though somewhat questionable going this far. IRISH MISSION should improve stretching out second time for Christophe Clement, who has won multiple renewals of the Sheepshead Bay, including Discreet Marq last year.

TENTH RACE BEYOND EMPIRE is second time back from an extended absence after good effort at Aqueduct; call in wide open finale. HERE COMES TOMMY usually gets a share, and although 1-7-2 from 19 trips, is better than most of these. HERE HE FITZ is in peak form, which is to say, he is much improved since running second to 1-for-48 CAT MAN FU in mid-winter.

KEY STAT: Derby have scored two or more goals in seven of their last eight matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Derby have the energy to cause problems for QPR’s ageing defence and should be able to win this Championship play-off final inside 90 minutes. QPR have plenty of experience, but their finish to the season has been plagued by inconsistency, posting back-to-back victories just once since the end of January.

RECOMMENDATION: Derby

KEY STAT: Atletico have won just one of their last 30 games against Real Madrid inside 90 minutes

EXPERT VERDICT: It’s been a brilliant season for Atletico but the continental showpiece in Lisbon may just be a step too far. Real have been sensational in Europe with Cristiano Ronaldo seemingly scoring at will, while Atletico have a poor record against their city rivals, who look set to land their tenth European Cup.

RECOMMENDATION: Real Madrid

KEY STAT: Rotherham have won just three of their last eight games

EXPERT VERDICT: Only Wolves scored more goals than Leyton Orient and Rotherham during the regular campaign but it would be a surprise if Russell Slade lets his Orient side go gung-ho in the League One play-off final. Slade should have the tactical edge over his opposite number, Steve Evans, and the underdogs look the value.

RECOMMENDATION: Leyton Orient

KEY STAT: Hibs have not kept a clean sheet in their last 11 home league matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Hibs have taken charge of the Scottish Premiership play-off final after a 2-0 win at Hamilton in the first leg. However, their league form was poor prior to their victory at New Douglas Park and the Accies have scored in their last eight away games so they can at least get on the scoresheet.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Ireland have scored in each of their last eight home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Martin O’Neill has lost only once as Republic of Ireland manager, and his team have kept clean sheets in two of those three outings. Turkey have won their last three home friendlies, against Northern Ireland, Belarus and Sweden, but are vulnerable on the road against decent hosts.

RECOMMENDATION: Ireland

KEY STAT: Burton have won just one of their last five matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Burton will be desperate to make up for defeat in the semi-finals last season but Fleetwood look fair favourites. The win over York, who were on a 17-game unbeaten run when they lost the first leg of their semi-final to Fleetwood, suggests the Cod Army are turning it on when it counts.

RECOMMENDATION: Fleetwood

Race 1 - $25,000 Guaranteed Pick Five Pool

Race 3 - $30,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Race 7 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

MEET STATS: 25 - 79 / $175.20 BEST BETS: 3 - 6 / $13.00

Best Bet: MY TEMUDGIN N (11th)

Spot Play: RUSTY SKIPP (8th)

Race 1

(2) SWEET ROCK can't seem to buy a win but does appear to be a step faster than most of these. (6) CARD SHOCK is the only other pacer signed on who shows a 1:52 mile. (1) ACE OF SHARKS improved with Lasix added.

Race 2

(2) SUNFIRE BLUE CHIP qualified back nicely behind Captaintreacherous and appears set to roll for a barn that has been sending them out ready. (4) WAKE UP PETER has proven capable of grinding on the rim; sharp. (5) FRANKIES DRAGON just missed in a big mile last time.

Race 3

(1A) SAYITALL BB flashed good pace at both ends of the mile while facing a better filly last time. (2) ROCKINGCAM PARK only needs a smooth trip to be a menace. (6) FANTICIPATION hasn't missed a check this year.

Race 4

(3) ACT NOW rallied nicely from an impossible spot in her first start since November. Western Ideal-sired filly has talent and is eligible to improve. (1) ATSALLRITE HANOVER was in full flight while sweeping the field impressively last time. (4) BLIXTRA improved in her most recent race.

Race 5

(4) DANCIN HILL hasn't really shown his best yet and should have every opportunity to stretch his legs out before the final. (5) DOO WOP HANOVER raced well behind a top 3-year-old in Western Vintage. This guy is the horse to beat. (2) BEAT THE DRUM has a right to improve in his second start of the year.

Race 6

(3) WARRAWEE NEEDY is one fast sucker who can reel off immense speed at a moment's notice. All he needs is a reasonable trip to score in this spot. (2) BOLT THE DUER should be much better in his second start of the year; very dangerous. (1) CLEAR VISION & (1B) SWEET LOU are two-thirds of a powerful Ron Burke entry. Either could win.

Race 7

(6) DRAGON LORE was awesome while romping to victory in the preliminary leg of this mini-series. (5) TELL US MORE has some traffic and still paced home willingly late. (7) MEIRS HANOVER moves into a new barn, but this stable knows how to make them roll.

Race 8

(4) RUSTYS SKIPP was super two starts back but couldn't get in gear last time. Now Callahan is back in the bike; expecting form reversal. (6) HILLBILLY rallied nicely last time and only needs to be close to have a shot. (9) K LEES SHAKENBAKE has ability but needs some pace help up front to set him up.

Race 9

(3) SHADIOS finished better with Lasix added in his last qualifier. In a field with no standouts, I'll take a shot. (7) JENERAL PATTON looked good in his career debut but moves to an outside post and faces slightly tougher. (2) RESPECTABLE DREAM ships in off a nice mile at Yonkers.

Race 10

(4) JINS DRAGON is hardly an inspired pick, but he could control the action in this race. (1) WILLY MUCHA has speed and the cones; big chance. (8) BOLDER & (10) RELENTLESS DREAMER both need a fast pace to set up their late kicks.

Race 11

(4) MY TEMUDJIN N comes off a sharp mile and should be able to tackle this modestly more difficult crew. (2) MIGHTY YOUNG JOE figures to flash speed tonight. (5) COBALT MAN hails from a barn that sent out live horses last weekend.

Race 12

(2) NEAT raced gamely for second despite a long trip versus a nice 3-year-old. (4) SOMEWHERE FANCY drops out of stakes competition. (6) LETS FOAL AROUND has speed and form.

Race 13

(10) ALEX BULLVILLE & (9) IM BANSKY jump off the page as the best two horses in the field. One of them should win despite the tough posts. (1) ITTAKESTWOBABY won when last seen at this level.

Yonkers: Saturday 5/24 Analysis
By Matt Rose
DRF HARNESS

MEET STATS: 150 - 442 / $809.30 BEST BETS: 26 - 36 / $87.30

Best Bet: ALL BETS OFF (11th)

Spot Play: DIAMOND COWBOY (8th)

Race 1

(3) SIR ZIGGY'S Z TAM was a solid third the last two weeks chasing good rivals; from this spot it could be his turn to take command. (5) SALEVSTER STALLION had no real excuse to falter last week versus cheaper but this isn't a strong field and he deserves a look. (2) SAINT WILLIAM A didn't fire last out; his prior couple of efforts were decent.

Race 2

(2) CHINA GRILL took a month off and qualified effectively; veteran has beaten better than these in the past and Lachance should be close enough to strike from this spot. (5) PANCETTA jogged in his second return start and he'll attract plenty of attention at the windows again. (1) MORTAL ZIN was second best to a 1/9 shot last week and he draws best again.

Race 3

(3) PANONGAHELA gets much-needed post relief and was Bartlett's choice of four. (1) MYSTICAL WALTER ships in from Pennsylvania, had a good three-year-old campaign and Holland drives tonight. (7) HILLBILLY HANOVER has Brennan driving for Burke; tough to ignore.

Race 4

(4) SOUTHWIND SILENCE tightened decently in her first 2014 start for Burke and she is clearly the most accomplished in here. (5) PALM BEACH has ability as evidenced by that recent qualifier but she broke in her last three races; be careful. (1) IT WAS FASCINATION qualified three times in 2014 and seemed to get better in each one.

Race 5

(6) GREAT VINTAGE easily took care of business last week and he can handle the hike in class. (2) DRUMFIRE A returns locally and has had his moments here in the past. (4) BIG N BAD makes his second U.S. start after arriving from Fraser Downs; four-year-old appears to have some ability.

Race 6

(1) ALSO ENCOURAGING is perfect in her two 2014 starts for Casie Coleman; short price looming here. (2) TYRA hinted at real ability last season. (3) JK MOLLY hasn't fired in her two seasonal starts yet for Burke.

Race 7

(1) SAPPHIRE CITY gets a very generous post assignment and he's the star of the recently rejuvenated Blumenfeld barn; veteran should be on the lead or in the pocket tonight. (2) DYNAMIC YOUTH was super in victory last week facing lesser. (3) DIGITAL Z TAM has gone from generic claimers to Open winner in a short period of time; obviously the veteran is capable of repeating.

Race 8

(1) DIAMOND COWBOY gets needed post relief off a no-chance effort; Bartlett should work out a perfect trip from this spot. (3) TAKE IT BACK TERRY is back at a winning level and the Burke trainee looks like the one to beat. (7) MACHS BEACH BOY is in a tough spot tonight but he could close for a share.

Race 9

All eyes will be on (2) HE'S WATCHING as the super colt looks to remain undefeated. (6) *******VILLE had some experience here as a freshman and he returns off a solid score at Pocono; Tetrick is here to drive. (1) UNLOCKED appears to have some ability but he's also shown some breaks.

Race 10

(5) EIGHTEEN doesn't have a ton of speed inside of him and the classy vet may have a clear path to the front. (2) FAT MANS ALLEY is capable of grinding forever and reaching late. (6) CONNERY BLUE CHIP was solid in defeat last week and has hit the board in his last six tries.

Race 11

(3) ALL BETS OFF was the Matron winner last season at Dover and he's raced well versus more seasoned types in both 2014 efforts; Burke trainee is best here. (1) IDEAL FASHION qualified effectively with Lasix added and the colt draws best. (4) THEREISAPACEFORUS finished willingly in his two seasonal efforts and he hails from the live Takter barn.

Race 12

(2) THE LADIES MAN hit town a few back and won in dominating fashion, however in his last two he's had no real excuse; I'm giving him one more chance. (8) UNCLE SMOOTHIE was very impressive in his local debut; only problem here is the eight hole. (1) LIFE UP FRONT gets needed post relief.

Race 13

(4) LAWGIVER HANOVER has raced pretty well in his last two and I'll give him a try despite Sears choosing elsewhere. (2) DREAMLANDS ART debuts for Brainard off the sale and he looks fast enough to do damage here. (5) ROCNROLWILNEVERDIE had no excuse last week but his prior effort was good.

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet: SHES DA BOMB (1st)

Spot Play: BETTOR THAN YOU (11th)

Race 1

(4) SHES DA BOMB raced in the Grand Circuit last season, posted a strong qualifier and very is capable in her 2014 debut. (2) LADY SHADOW draws inside, won at this level last week and will offer a low price. (1) WONDERFUL CHARM gets the rail, has been racing very consistently and a is logical option for the triactor.

Race 2

(9) SWEETIE HEARTS is fresh off an open-length win at The Meadowands, returns to the Parsons barn and is very capable in here. (2) ***** MAC draws well, comes out of the McIntosh barn and is very versatile. (5) TOSCA likely will offer a price as she made a miscue last week. In his two prior efforts he hit the board and comes from the Henriksen barn.

Race 3

(7) MAGIC FEELING has won two straight and enjoys being put into the race. (3) FLEXIBLE WOMAN draws well, comes from a top trotting barn and has excellent gate-speed. (1) DANICA also draws well and hasn't missed the board in two starts this season.

Race 4

(5) BLENDED WHISKEY gets class relief, comes out of the Johnson barn and showed the speed needed last week. (2) MISTER ICON draws well and won in this class last week. (7) JAC SPADE should be better placed this week and enjoys racing from behind. He may offer a price and is due for a big effort.

Race 5

(5) RIVETING ROSIE was the rookie champion last year and will look to regain top form after her miscue last start. (7) I JASMIN qualified very strongly and looks like she has more to offer. (8) MARGIE won by open lengths last week in her season debut, comes from a top trotting barn and is a top candidate in here.

Race 6

(4) GRIN FOR MONEY gets class relief, draws much better and should be in perfect position to close. (5) ADVERSARY SEELSTER draws well, has excellent gate-speed and has been racing very consistent. (2) THE REV comes out of the McNair barn, closed well last start and may offer a fair price.

Race 7

(8) COUGAR HALL won last week in a career best effort and faces much of the same group. (7) DAPPER DUDE comes out of the McIntosh barn, drops in class and gets Waples. (10) SING FOR ME GEORGE moves back onto this circuit and faces an easier group. He'll have to overcome post 10, but proves he's worthy.

Race 8

(7) ASLAN comes out of the O'Sullivan barn, shows the speed and gets McNair in the bike. (2) URBANITE HANOVER went to the back last week as the favourite, but draws much better this start and should be better placed. (3) MAJOR HOTTIE draws well and has won two of his last three starts.

Race 9

(2) WATKINS draws inside, comes out of Moreau's barn and is overdue for his first win of the season. (9) ZEUS LIGHTNING has a lot of back class to him and has been finishing his miles very strong. (3) TALBOTCREEK JEWELY draws inside and likely will provide a price. She'll need an inside trip, but is a good option for the triactor.

Race 10

(6) STATE TREASURER has won two straight in this class and has been a convincing winner. (5) CAPTIVE AUDIENCE's resume this season speaks for itself. He's versatile and a prime threat. (4) RESISTANCE FUTILE posted a very strong qualifier, draws inside and may offer a fair price in his first start back.

Race 11

(2) BETTER THAN YOU draws inside, went a big mile last start and is due for his first win of the season. (6) THUNDER STEELER shows the speed needed over The Meadowlands, moves onto this circuit and comes out of Alagna's barn. (5) THEPANINSULAHOTEL has a lot of back class to him and drops in class.

Race 12

(5) SANTANNA BLUE CHIP closed very well last week and remains at this same class. He comes out of the Gillis barn and a top threat. (4) RAYS SAN hasn't missed the board in each of his last five starts and comes out of Moreau's barn. (7) CLASSIC GENT comes out of the Johnson barn, has the speed and may offer a price. This is a wide-open tilt and a great betting board.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 4 SUANCES FLOWER 2/1

# 1 KOCHEN BEKI 4/1

# 2 MAIDA VALE 5/1

I think SUANCES FLOWER is a very good choice. Could provide positive gains based on very strong recent Equibase Speed Figures with an average of 79. Players should take a good look at this one as this mare has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this field. Has been running well lately and will almost certainly be on the lead early on. KOCHEN BEKI - Boasts sound speed figures on average overall when put alongside the rest of this field. Anderson has one of the most competitive winning percentages in this group with entries running at this distance and surface. MAIDA VALE - Andros will almost certainly be able to get this mare to break out quickly in this race. Brown has a solid 28 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface.

#4 THUNDER BONNET (ML=5/2)

THUNDER BONNET - The outside post didn't help this horse's chances last time out at Louisiana Downs. Today's inside post should be just fine. Last race at Louisiana Downs on May 8th was a big class drop for this horse. Facing similar foes in this event. She should do well this time. Have to forget about that last grass race. This filly should do better hitting the dirt in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 BORN TO SWING (ML=3/1), #2 RUNAWAY BRIDLE (ML=9/2), #6 GOTTA LOVE YA (ML=5/1),

BORN TO SWING - This filly earned a fig in her last event which probably isn't good enough in today's event. RUNAWAY BRIDLE - Tough to wager on any thoroughbred to turn things around if there is no value to taking the chance. GOTTA LOVE YA - Just can't wager on this entrant. Didn't show me anything in the last race or on April 25th. Won't be easy for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed fig. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class figure, so put her on the possibly overvalued contestants list.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Putting our cash on #4 THUNDER BONNET to win. Have to have odds of at least 1/1 or better though

#3 COOL TODDY (ML=5/2)
#4 ANITEWITHYOU (ML=7/2)

COOL TODDY - This mare is in exceptional form right now. Ended up second last race out and comes back quickly. Took a big class drop last out, and I think she may have needed it. Toye enters her at a similar level today. I'd expect an improved performance. ANITEWITHYOU - Forgive the out of the top three finish on the off track last time out. Without the slop, has a good shot in this race. With a big class drop in class figure points from her September 28th race at Emerald Downs. Based on that valuable data, I will give this horse the advantage. She has the uppermost earnings per start (EPS). Take a long look at this thoroughbred.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 HOUSE OF HOPE (ML=3/1), #6 SYDNEY ON MY MIND (ML=6/1),

HOUSE OF HOPE - This racer ran a pedestrian speed rating last race out. She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will likely suffer defeat in today's event running that fig. SYDNEY ON MY MIND - Hard to put any cash on this mare on the top end. Likes to finish in the money though.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - COOL TODDY - Betting the equine with the best last race speed figure is a good angle. None higher than this mare's last one.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Go with #3 COOL TODDY on top if we're getting at least 7/5 odds

RACE #9 - BELMONT PARK - 5:28 PM EASTERN POST
The Sheepshead Bay Stakes
11.0 FURLONGS INNER TURF FILLIES AND MARES FOUR YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $200,000.00 PURSE

#3 FITFUL SKIES
#5 LADY COHIBA
#6 ABACO
#7 IRISH MISSION

Although there is indeed a Sheepshead Bay here in New York City, which separates the mainland of Brooklyn, New York City, from the eastern portion of Coney Island, the latter originally a barrier island but now effectively an extension of the mainland with peninsulas both east (the neighborhood of Manhattan Beach) and west (the neighborhoods of Coney Island and Sea Gate). The mouth of the bay is about 1.0 mile (1.6 km) southwest of Marine Park, Brooklyn ... this race is actually named after the old Brooklyn Racetrack that operated 1880-1910. Sheepshead Bay was closed down when the Hughes Ban eliminated all racing in New York in 1911 and 1912 and was never reopened. Here in the 56th renewal of this graded stakes test, #3 FITFUL SKIES, an Irish-bred entry, tops my multiple entry contender's list ... she's won four of five in her career to date racing at, or about, today's distance of 11.0 furlongs on the grass, and has produced "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in five straight, hitting the board in four, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in her 3rd race back. Jockey Irad Ortiz, and Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin send her to the post for the "Saturday Feature" ... they've hit the board with 53% of more than 100 entries saddled as a team to date. #5 LADY COHIBA, the morning line favorite, has scored with a pair of "POWER RUN WINS" in her last three "adventures."

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 7 YOUCANCOUNTONME 2/1

# 1 ISSHEIT 9/2

# 8 BLUEBRASS BELLE 8/1

YOUCANCOUNTONME looks to be a respectable contender. Shows signs of the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 80 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the most respectable in this group. This mare gets a boost with Martinez in the irons. A solid 85 avg class rating may give this mare a distinct class edge versus this field. ISSHEIT - Will almost certainly go to the lead and could never look back. With a formidable 65 average Equibase Speed Fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. BLUEBRASS BELLE - Has posted strong Equibase Speed Figures in dirt route races in the past. Maymo has her trained solidly to break sharply out of the gate.
