KEY STAT: Both teams have scored in four of Deportivo’s five home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Seville are enjoying a fine start to the season and are favourites to bounce back from a home defeat to Barcelona by winning at Deportivo. However, doubts remain over the Andalusians’ defending - both teams have scored in eight of their 11 league matches this term - and Depor have enough about them to trouble the visitors’ rearguard.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Arsenal have won only twice in 13 meetings with United

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester United have yet to convince under Jose Mourinho but the master tactician can extend his excellent head-to-head record against Arsene Wenger with victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford. The managers have met 13 times in competitive action and Mourinho has yet to lose to his rival, boasting a 54 per cent win ratio.

RECOMMENDATION: Man Utd

KEY STAT: Southampton have lost only one of their last 13 home matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Buoyed by beating Inter at home in the Europa League, Southampton must feel fairly invincible on their own patch. It’s one thing stopping an out-of-form Inter, quite another halting an on-fire Liverpool, but Claude Puel won’t make the same mistakes against the Reds that other managers have and Saints can hold on for a point.

KEY STAT: Both teams have scored in five of Palace’s last six games

EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester City backers have had their fingers burnt on several occasions in the last couple of months and while they should oblige here, their defence remains a source of concern. The Citizens have kept only one clean sheet in 11 outings and in the shape of Christian Benteke, Crystal Palace have the tools to test them.

KEY STAT: Stoke have won the last five meetingsat home to Bournemouth

EXPERT VERDICT: Stoke have eased their relegation fears after picking up 11 points from five games and can extend their impressive run against Bournemouth. KEY STAT: Everton are unbeaten in eight home league matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Swansea are unbeaten in their last four league games against Everton, but it’s hard to fancy them this time. The appointment of Bob Bradley looks little short of a disaster and two points out of a possible 27 is the record of a side heading for relegation. Everton can ensure a routine win.

RECOMMENDATION: Everton to win 2-0

NHL roundup: Letang, Pens edge Isles in OT
By The Sports Xchange

NEW YORK -- Kris Letang scored 1:24 into overtime Friday night as the Pittsburgh Penguins came back to edge the New York Islanders 3-2 at Barclays Center.
Letang's goal was set up by an impressive pass by Sidney Crosby, who deked Brock Nelson and Shane Prince to the right of the Islanders' net and passed to Letang, who fired the puck into a wide open net as New York goalie Jaroslav Halak was stuck leaning in the other direction.
Crosby and Trevor Daley also scored for the Penguins, who bounced back from a 7-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night. Goalie Matt Murray made 20 saves.
Brock Nelson and Anthony Beauvillier scored within less than a minute of each other in the second for the Islanders, who have lost four straight and seven of eight. Halak recorded 32 saves.

Blackhawks 3, Flames 2
CALGARY, Alberta -- Marian Hossa's goal with just 2:23 left in the third period lifted Chicago over Calgary.
Hossa crashed the crease and tapped the puck across the line out of mid-air after Artemi Panarin directed a shot at the Calgary goal that bounced off Flames goalie Chad Johnson. Ryan Hartman and Brent Seabrook also scored for Chicago.
Sam Bennett and Sean Monahan each had a goal and an assist for the Flames and Troy Brouwer contributed two assists.

Blue Jackets 4, Rangers 2
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus set a club record with their seventh consecutive home win, beating New York in Nationwide Arena.
The Blue Jackets scored the go-ahead goal short-handed at 11:35 of the third period. Matt Calvert, who left blood on the ice earlier in the game after taking a puck to the forehead, found the net while teammate David Savard was in the penalty box for cross-checking. Sam Gagner and William Karlsson also scored and Boone Jenner added an empty-net goal.
Mika Zibanejad and Michael Grabner scored for the Rangers.

Capitals 1, Red Wings 0
WASHINGTON -- Jay Beagle scored with 5:11 left in the game, Braden Holtby stopped 25 shots, and Washington defeated Detroit.
Just moments after Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard made a nice save on Beagle in front of the net, Beagle swiped in the rebound of a Dmitry Orlov shot for his fourth goal of the season.
Braden Holtby picked up his first shutout of the season and 24th of his career.

Hurricanes 3, Canadiens 2
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Jeff Skinner, Teuvo Teravainen and Victor Rask scored less than six minutes apart in the third period as Carolina rallied past Montreal.
Ron Hainsey assisted on the first two Carolina goals with shots from the point as the Hurricanes won their third straight. Cam Ward stopped 31 shots to improve to 4-1-2 in November.
Andrew Shaw and Jeff Petry scored for the Canadiens.

Preview: Lightning (11-6) at Flyers (8-7)

Date: November 19, 2016 1:00 PM EDT

PHILADELPHIA -- The Tampa Bay Lightning learned how to win without star forward Steven Stamkos in the past and they'll need to do it again after learning the 26-year-old sniper will be out at least four months with a torn meniscus.

When they visit the Flyers (8-7-3) on Saturday afternoon, the Lightning (11-6-1) will try to continue what has been a perfect start to a five-game road trip (3-0-0).

Tampa Bay did just fine in its first game without Stamkos, throttling the struggling Buffalo Sabres 4-1 on Thursday night on the strength of balanced scoring and 32 saves from Ben Bishop.

"Obviously, it's a huge blow to our team," Bishop said of losing Stamkos, who three years ago missed 45 games with a broken leg and last season missed all but one playoff game with a blood clot in his collar bone. "You lose your captain and arguably one of the best players in the league. It's a tough pill to swallow. It's just one of those things where you've got to step up. Everyone has to pick up the slack a little bit. ... You've got to go more as a team effort because you can't rely on your big dog to come through."

Alex Killorn recorded a goal and an assist for the Lightning and Nikita Nesterov, Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point also scored for Tampa. Kucherov has four goals and two assists in his last three games and is now tied for the NHL lead with 22 points in 17 games.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said it won't be easy replacing Stamkos, whose 20 points in 16 games ranked third in the league before his injury.

"There's always that emotional first game when you're without your guy," Cooper said. "So the problem is that it's not just one game, it's months, and we just have to stay consistent."

The Flyers, who have been seeking consistency all season, are expected to welcome back rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who was a healthy scratch for the first time in his NHL career Thursday night.

Philadelphia won two of its last three games and received a strong 30-save effort from Steve Mason in Thursday night's 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Four different Flyers scored in that win and 12 different players recorded points.

It was just the fourth time this season Philadelphia held an opponent under three goals and just the sixth time it did not allow a goal in the third period.

"I think definitely when you're going into the third with a lead you can't let up at all," said right wing Wayne Simmonds, who scored his team-leading ninth goal in the third period on Thursday night to give the Flyers a 4-2 lead. "We've got to pressure. Falling behind is kind of where we've laid back in the third period we kind of let teams give it to us and I think that's where we get in trouble, so we've got to keep following this groove."

Mason is expected to return to the net, where he'll be looking to win consecutive games for the first time this season.

"Mason made some huge saves for us and he can't do that every game," Philadelphia defenseman Mark Streit said. "As a whole team we need to improve, especially on Saturday when we face another good offensive team. We need to be in sync."

Preview: Maple Leafs (8-6) at Canadiens (13-3)

Date: November 19, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

MONTREAL -- The NHL-leading Montreal Canadiens are once again streaking. Only this time, it's in the opposite direction.

After matching or setting franchise -- and league -- records en route to a 13-1-1 start, the Canadiens are now 0-2-1 in their past three games after falling to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night in Raleigh. Now they'll head home to face a Toronto Maple Leafs squad on a roll, rested and waiting in Montreal.

It's the second meeting in three weeks for the historic rivals, and the final on at the Bell Centre. The teams last squared off on Oct. 29 in Montreal, with the Canadiens skating away with a 2-1 victory.

The Canadiens gave up three goals in six minutes in the third period against Carolina to see a 1-0 lead become a 3-1 deficit. It marked the third straight game of at least three goals allowed for Montreal and while they connected three times of their own in Tuesday's overtime loss to Florida, they've only scored three goals total in their two other losses.

"I think the effort was there," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said after the loss to the Hurricanes. "You need puck luck and we don't have the puck luck lately."

If there's been one bright spot during Montreal's recent slide, it's the play of defenseman Andrei Markov. The 16-year NHL veteran picked up a pair of assists against the Hurricanes to extend his point streak to seven games and moving him into a tie with Yvan Cournoyer for seventh place on the Canadiens' all-time assists list.

Carey Price, who made 37 saves in their last meeting with Toronto, will get the start in goal on Saturday but Therrien didn't confirm any other potential line-up changes. Rookie Charles Hudon, called up from the AHL on Thursday, replaced Sven Andrighetto. He could earn another go after picking up an assist and leaving an impression on his coach.

"We'll see, but he played really well," Therrien said. "He played well for a first game, I thought he created offensively, really responsible on the ice. I thought the kid competed really well. I'm pleased with his effort."

For the Maple Leafs, November has been much kinder than October was. After posting a 2-4-3 record in the opening month of the season, Toronto has won six of its eight games so far this month. And not only has Mike Babcock's group been winning, it's been doing so with plenty of offense of late; Toronto has scored at least six goals in each of their most recent four wins.

The young Leafs have made headlines for their offensive efforts and while the likes of Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews and William Nylander have generated most of the buzz, rookie Connor Brown added his name to the conversation on Thursday night. Brown became the fifth Maple Leafs player to record a four-point night with two goals and a pair of assists in a 6-1 win over the Panthers.

"I'm slowly getting more comfortable with the puck and more comfortable making plays," Brown told TSN after the game. "Offensively it was a bit of a slow start but I feel good defensively and I feel like I'm in the right spots."

While the offense has been rolling, it's been doing so without much help from the power play. Toronto has scored just three times on 19 opportunities with the man advantage and has been held off the scoresheet in four of the past five games.

Opponents aren't scoring much on power plays either against the Leafs, who have allowed just three goals on the penalty kill and have denied the opposition of any power play tallies in six of eight games this month.

Preview: Penguins (11-4) at Sabres (5-8)

Date: November 19, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Sidney Crosby raises his game another to level when the calendar reads November. The Buffalo Sabres know how dangerous he can be regardless of what month it is.

Crosby looks to continue his high-scoring ways and help the Pittsburgh Penguins extend some lengthy winning streaks over the Sabres when the teams face off on Saturday night in western New York.

The accomplishments by "Sid the Kid" are well-documented-- two-time Hart Trophy winner as league MVP, two-time Art Ross Trophy winner as league scoring leader, and a two-time Stanley Cup winner among many others.

Over the course of 11-plus NHL seasons, November has clearly been Crosby's time to shine even brighter. His power-play goal in Friday night's 3-2 overtime win against the New York Islanders was the 73rd of his career, far and away the most he's had in any month.

Crosby also assisted on Kris Letang's game-winner 1:24 into the extra session.

"When he's got time and space, he's going to hurt you," Letang said of Crosby, whose career numbers against Buffalo are eye-popping.

In 31 games, Crosby has 14 goals and 35 assists, helping the Penguins to a 22-7-2 record. In 17 career games at KeyBank Arena, Crosby has nine goals and 19 assists leading them to a 12-4-1 mark.

Pittsburgh (11-4-2) has won nine straight from the Sabres by a combined 37-13 score, thanks in large part to 15 assists from Crosby, and six in a row in Buffalo by a combined 26-11 count with Crosby contributing 12 assists.

Crosby has 11 goals in 11 games after missing the first six with a concussion, and is one goal shy of 350 for his career. Despite the delayed start to his season, Crosby is tied for second in goals, one behind rookie Patrik Laine of the Winnipeg Jets for the NHL lead.

After Matt Murray defeated the Islanders, Marc-Andre Fleury may get the chance to bounce back from some recent subpar play. In his last three appearances, including two starts, Fleury has surrendered 11 goals in just over 162 minutes for a 4.06 goals-against average.

But Fleury has hardly struggled versus the Sabres. In 26 career starts, Fleury is 19-5-2 with 2.18 goals-against average and four shutouts, and he's won seven straight starts in Buffalo, posting a 1.43 GAA and .950 save percentage with two shutouts.

Buffalo (5-8-4) has not made the playoffs since 2011 and any hopes of ending that streak appear to be a long shot. The Sabres are 1-4-2 at home, have an NHL-low 31 goals and are at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with 14 points.

Left winger Matt Moulson said Buffalo needs to refocus on the ice.

"We talked (Friday) about concentrating on playing the right way," Moulson told the team's official website. "It seems like we're giving up a lot of odd-man rushes to some pretty skilled groups the last couple of games, so I think that's the focus. Playing the right way will lead to offensive chances and scoring chances."

A three-time 30-goal scorer, Moulson has six goals in 17 games after totaling eight in 81 games with Buffalo last season. He also has two goals and an assist in a three-game point streak versus the Penguins.

Among the Sabres struggling to score consistently is right wing Kyle Okposo. Though he's second on the team behind Moulson with five goals and has a team-best 10 points, Okposo has failed to score in six straight games, and he has just one goal at home.

"We've got to make sure we're playing the right way and we can't press," Okposo told the team's website.

While with the Islanders, Okposo had a career-best four goals in a win over Pittsburgh on Jan. 16, 2015. In five matchups since then, he's had a goal and two assists.

Buffalo center Ryan O'Reilly -- the team's second-leading scorer with nine points (four goals, five assists) -- is expected to miss his fourth straight game with an oblique injury.

However, one player who could help the Sabres' sputtering offense is left wing Evander Kane, who's been limited to six games this season after missing 11 with cracked ribs. Though Kane has just one assist so far, he's scored three goals and added six assists in his last five games against the Penguins.

Defenseman Dmitry Kulikov (no points, minus-4 in 12 games) has missed the last four games with a back injury and is not likely to suit up Saturday for Buffalo.

Right winger Patric Hornqvist (five goals, eight assists, 16 games) missed Friday's contest for Pittsburgh with a concussion suffered in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to the Washington Capitals. It's not immediately known if he will be cleared to face the Sabres.

Preview: Avalanche (7-9) at Wild (9-6)

Date: November 19, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- The fact that the Minnesota Wild have scored just one goal in the last seven periods of hockey at home would be a cause of great concern for most NHL teams. And while there's always a desire for more offense, when you're getting goaltending on the level of what Devan Dubnyk is doing lately, you can keep your head above water.

The Wild head into their Saturday night home meeting with the Colorado Avalanche as Dubnyk is coming off his NHL-best fourth shutout of the season -- a dramatic 1-0 win vs. the Boston Bruins on Thursday -- and leading the league in all the statistical categories. So the recent lack of goal support is less concerning for a goalie that's allowed nine goals in his past nine games.

"It's not my job to score," Dubnyk said after blanking the Bruins for the second time this season. "It's my job to work with the guys and defend. I have zero complaints with how the guys have been defending for me and playing. You take pride in that. This is a fun group to be out on the ice with right now in our end. You enjoy that time while they're playing as well as they are for me. I got no question in here that these guys can put the puck in the net."

Although when they played the Avalanche in Denver two weeks ago, it was one of only two times this season that the Wild didn't score, suffering a 1-0 loss when Colorado goalie Calvin Pickard stopped all 32 shots he faced. The Avalanche are just 2-4-1 since then, and are coming off a loss in Dallas where they fell behind 3-0 early, rallied to pull within a goal, but fell short anyway. The nearly-complete comeback didn't draw many words of praise from Colorado's first-year coach.

"I loved our guys' effort for the final 40 minutes, but unfortunately 40 minutes doesn't get the job done on many occasions," he said. "Especially when you're that poor in the first, that was frustrating to watch."

The frustration is starting to show for Avalanche star forward Nathan MacKinnon as well, who has just three goals after 16 games. That lack of offense comes after his star turn for Team North America in September's World Cup games which had expectations raised among the Colorado faithful.

While both teams are battling nagging injuries, the Wild are possibly getting closer to full health, as defenseman Marco Scandella has returned to skating with the team and may be cleared to return to the lineup soon. He has missed the last eight games with a high sprain of his right ankle. The Avalanche were without two offensive stalwarts -- Gabriel Landeskog and Matt Duchene -- in the loss at Dallas, but that did free up ice time for others, and rookie A.J. Greer notched his first NHL point versus the Stars after having been recalled from Colorado's AHL team in San Antonio on Thursday.

Preview: Sharks (9-8) at Coyotes (5-9)

Date: November 19, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

PHOENIX -- As if the Arizona Coyotes have not gone through enough this season ...

Arizona lost its fourth straight game Thursday and also lost key contributor Brad Richardson for an extended period when he suffered a two broken bones in his right leg in a 3-2 overtime loss at Vancouver on Thursday.

San Jose, meanwhile, looks to finish a six-game road trip on a high note when it visits the Coyotes on Saturday at Gila River Arena.

At the least, the Coyotes are expected to start No. 1 goaltender Mike Smith, who made his first appearance in a month in a 2-1 overtime loss at Calgary on Wednesday. Smith had not played since suffering a lower-body injury early in a 7-4 loss at Ottawa in the second game of the season Oct. 18.

San Jose (9-8) is three points behind Pacific Division-leading Anaheim. The Sharks lost to Pittsburgh in the Stanley Cup Finals last year.

The Coyotes (5-9-2) have 12 points, the fewest in the league, although they have played two fewer games than all but one of the teams in the Pacific.

The Sharks are 3-2 on the trip but have lost the last two games while scoring only two goals. They were 0-for-6 on the power play in a 3-2 loss at St. Louis on Thursday.

"We've got to find a way to cash in when we get the chance," coach Pete DeBoer said.

San Jose will be without center Tomas Hertl, who suffered a lower body injury against St. Louis and returned to the Bay Area for further evaluation Friday.

Defenseman Brett Burns leads the Sharks with six goals and is tied with center Joe Pavelski for the team lead with 14 points. Pavelski has five goals and center Logan Couture has four.

"Sometimes it feels like we're forcing plays through bodies, through sticks," Couture said. "Other times if feels like we're not shooting the puck, not getting motion toward the net, not getting second and third opportunities. Feels like we're one shot and out, which isn't us. We usually shoot the puck, get it back, shoot it again."

Richardson suffered fractures to his right tibia and right fibula in a collision with Vancouver defenseman Nikita Tryamkin midway through the second period Thursday in the loss to the Canucks.

Richardson, who scored his fifth goal of the season as the Coyotes took a 2-0 lead, underwent surgery in Vancouver on Friday morning and was "stabilized," the Coyotes said.

"He's a real heart-and-soul player," Arizona coach Dave Tippett told the team's website. "We're thin at center ice and we lose a key guy there, it takes a toll on us."

The Coyotes did not announce a timetable for Richardson's return, but it appears his second season with the team is in jeopardy.

Richardson, 31, is tied for second on the team in goals and tied for third with nine points. He is in the second year of a three-year, $6.25 million contract, and was signed as a free agent to add a veteran presence to a young team. He had 11 goals and a career-high 31 points last season, his 11th in the league.

In his absence, young centers Christian Dvorak and Dylan Strome could receive more playing time. Strome, 19, was the Coyotes' first-round pick in the 2015 draft, the third player taken overall. He played Thursday after missing the previous four games a healthy scratch.

Center Martin Hanzal, an unrestricted free agent next spring, had been mentioned in trade rumors, but it appears he is less likely to be moved now, if the Coyotes had ever considered a deal in the first place. Hanzal recently returned after missing five games with a lower body injury.

Coyotes wing Shane Doan, who played on Richardson's line, had his 553rd assist on Richardson's goal Thursday, tying Thomas Steen for first place on the franchise list.

Preview: Devils (9-4) at Kings (8-9)

Date: November 19, 2016 4:00 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- A central theme in the opening weeks of the NHL season has been the rash of significant injuries that have sidelined marquee players. It's no different for the New Jersey Devils and the Los Angeles Kings when they meet on Saturday afternoon at Staples Center.

The Devils (9-4-3) continue their "Life Without Taylor" saga on the third stop in their five-game road trip. New Jersey lost their most explosive offense threat, left winger Taylor Hall to a left knee injury suffered in its 4-2 win over Buffalo last Saturday and his absence will reinforce the Devils' reliance on their tight-checking defensive style that ranks them second in the NHL in goals against average.

While it's no surprise that starting goaltender Corey Schneider has posted quality numbers in net (7-4-2 record, 2.21 goals-against average, .926 save percentage), the work of backup Keith Kincaid has been as strong (2-0-1 record, 1.66 GAA, .944 save percentage). With the tandem's performance between the pipes, the Devils are off to a surprising start despite being tied for last in the Metropolitan Division in goals scored.

Also impacting the offense is the absence of Mike Cammalleri who is dealing with an undisclosed personal issue and hasn't played since November 8.

Without two of their best offensive weapons, it's no surprise the Devils have played a defensive game on the four-game road trip. They beat Dallas 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Anaheim Ducks Thursday but Coach John Hynes refuses to use the absences as an excuse for the loss.

"The guys we had on the ice can score and are good players," Hynes said after the loss. "After we went up 2-0 we got a little bit soft. We could have been harder on the puck in certain areas."

Coach John Hynes has been pleased with the team's overall play as he tries to get a more consistent effort from his power-play unit that went 0-for-3 against Anaheim and failed to convert its last 24 chances over seven games.

"That's a fair assessment," Hynes said. "There's parts of it that are really good and there are times when the power play is doing a lot of good things. But it's not consistent enough and I think to score you have to be more consistent. You can say you hope one goes in but we're not in the hope business. We have to be more consistent in certain areas."

The Kings (8-9-1) are trying to stay in the mix for playoff contention while dealing with multiple injuries that are a major reason for its sub-.500 record through 18 games. Every facet of the roster has been impacted, and serious injuries to goaltender Jonathan Quick, left winger Marian Gaborik and defenseman Brayden McNabb have forced coach Darryl Sutter to lean heavily on role players to pick up the slack.

The better news for Los Angeles is that another of the walking wounded, center Anze Kopitar is hopeful to return to the lineup against on Saturday after a three-game absence as his injured wrist continues to improve.

With pivotal players out it's up to the Kings depth players like Devin Setoguchi to provide support. Setoguchi scored his third goal of the season in Thursday's 4-2 win over Edmonton and realizes it is incumbent upon to produce if the Kings are going to break out of their inconsistent play.

"We have to find a way to be more consistent, it's tough. Every team on any given night has a legitimate chance to win," Setoguchi said. "We just have to find a consistent way to put together 60-minutes and stick to our game plan."

With the Pacific Division appearing to be far weaker than in previous seasons, coach Darryl Sutter knows that every point will be valuable in a division race that could go down to Game 82. He admits that the injuries has weakened his team significantly and is hoping their continued solid play at home will carry them.

"We aren't the same team that we were," Sutter said "We have one of the best home records in the National Hockey League and we're in a fight for the division."

Preview: Blackhawks (12-4) at Canucks (7-10)

Date: November 19, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- You could call them the Comeback Kids, but the Vancouver Canucks hope to discard that nickname soon.

The Canucks (7-10-1) have come back to win three of their past five games, and most others have required -- often unsuccessful -- rally attempts.

But the Canucks are looking to develop a different storyline Saturday when they host the Chicago Blackhawks (12-4-2) at Rogers Arena.

"We'd like to come in and get the lead and maintain the lead, which would be nice," defenseman Ben Hutton said. "But coming from behind just shows the character in this locker room."

Vancouver's last two wins have come in overtime. Hutton was the hero on Thursday as he scored on a penalty shot in OT to give the Canucks a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes. Markus Granlund scored the extra-time winner two games ago, on Sunday, as the Canucks rallied to beat the Dallas Stars.

Rather than delivering on comebacks, the Canucks would prefer to stage a comeuppance -- as in a climb up the standings from the NHL's nether regions.

Since winning their first four games of the season, the Canucks have not managed to win two in a row. The three aforementioned wins are the only victories that they have posted in their past 14 games.

Accordingly, defenseman Erik Gudbranson hopes that the "huge" win over Arizona -- a team at the bottom of the NHL standings -- will spark some badly needed momentum as the Canucks conclude a four-game homestand against the Blackhawks.

"We need to start somewhere," Gudbranson said. "We need to put something together. We're passionate about winning. We want to win here.

"We don't want to feel like those guys that have to bury their heads at the grocery store and feel embarrassed. We want to be good every single night. There is a lot of character in this dressing room. We are constantly pushing ourselves."

The usual push will need to be much bigger against the Blackhawks, who lead the Central Division despite having integrated six first-year players into their lineup. The Blackhawks have points in 12 of their past 13 games.

Winners of three Stanley Cups since 2010, they are succeeding at rebuilding on the fly -- something the Canucks have also sought but struggled to do. Canucks coach Willie Desjardins, whose future with the team has been discussed less often this week, hopes their recent success will boost their chances against the Blackhawks.

"We are starting to get a few wins," Desjardins said. "It should give us a little life going against Chicago. Chicago will play hard, and we know they are a real good team. I think we will come to the rink and have a good performance."

Fatigue could be a factor as the Blackhawks play the second of back-to-back games after Friday's 3-2 victory in Calgary. But the Blackhawks could get energy from a comeback story of their own.

Rookie winger Vinnie Hinostroza is expected to return to Chicago's lineup after recovering quickly from concussion suffered Tuesday in a collision with Winnipeg defenseman Josh Morrissey. According to Honotroza and coach Joel Quenneville, the player passed the league's concussion protocol.

"Anytime you're dealing with your head, it's a scary thing, so you want to be patient," Hinostroza told the Chicago Tribune. "But, luckily, it was a quick turnaround. Usually, it's a bit longer. We had a nice two days off there, so I kind of just laid in bed, didn't move. I feel good now."

Hinostroza, a 22-year-old Bartlett, Ill., native, was drafted by Chicago in the sixth round (169th overall) of the 2012 NHL entry draft and has spent most of the past two seasons in the minors, except seven games with Chicago last season. He had been playing on a line with stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane before being sidelined.

The rookie does not think his recent inactivity will slow him down.

"Obviously, two days laying in bed, you get a bit out of shape," Hinostroza told the Chicago Tribune. "But you get in shape quick here."

Meanwhile, the Blackhawks hope their seven-game Circus Trip -- so dubbed because it occurs each November when Barnum and Bailey and Ringley Bros. take over the United Center -- will enable Hinostroza and other young players to bond with the rest of the team.

The trip started poorly with a 4-0 loss in Winnipeg, but the Blackhawks rebounded with their victory over the Flames on Friday night.

"We want these guys to come together as teammates," general manager Stan Bowman told ESPN.com this week. "Right now, they don't know each other all that well."

A win in Vancouver, where the teams' somewhat dormant rivalry still stokes ill will, could further strengthen the relationships. A victory could also help the Blackhawks improve on a so-so road record that contrasts sharply with their 8-1-2 home mark.

"This (road trip) is going to be a good benchmark for us as a team," Bowman said.

If the Canucks want to discard their nickname, they will have to pay close attention to Chicago winger Marian Hossa, 37, who has five goals in his last six games and is tied for fourth in the league behind Patrik Laine (12), Sidney Crosby (11) and Michael Grabner (11). Hossa scored the controversial winning goal on Friday as he fell into Flames goaltender Brian Elliott.

"I just try to put the puck at the net right now," Hossa told reporters afterward. "When you feel like the puck's going in for you, you just try to be around the net or shoot pucks to the net and try to make plays."

Canucks G Ryan Miller, who missed Thursday's win with the flu, has been deemed healthy again. As a result, rookie G Michael Garteig was returned to Utica of the American Hockey League on Friday.

Grand Salami - November

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Preview: Jets (9-8) at Bruins (10-7)

Date: November 19, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

BOSTON -- Connor Hellebuyck is experiencing a series of emotions heading into this weekend.

The Winnipeg goalie posted his first shutout of the season when he blanked the Chicago Blackhawks Tuesday night -- making 27 saves for his third shutout in 38 career starts.

Thursday, the tables were turned and he gave up four goals in a loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Saturday, Hellebuyck, who played collegiately at UMass-Lowell, comes "home," with the Jets facing the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.

They also play Sunday at Carolina. Coach Paul Maurice says he will play both goalies -- Hellebuyck and Mike Hutchinson -- over the weekend, but you know Hellebuyck wants another shot at the Bruins. He lost to Boston 4-1 in Winnipeg Oct. 17.

As far as what's happened to him this week, especially the loss, Hellebuyck told the team's website, "Put it behind you and continue striving forward. That's just how hockey goes. There's 82 games and you can't look at one as the most important game of all. You just have to continue going forward and winning as many as possible."

If Hellebuyck, 0-2 with a 4.55 goals against average and just a .829 save percentage in two games against the Bruins, plays Saturday, he'll likely face Boston's Tuukka Rask, who was at the other end of the Oct. 17 Boston win. That was one of seven wins recorded by Rask before suffering his first road loss, at Minnesota, Thursday -- a 1-0 defeat on a goal with 45 seconds left.

Rask, who didn't have a strong season as the Bruins missed the playoffs for a second straight year in 2015-16, is off to a great start. He is 10-2 overall, with a 1.49 goals-against average and .947 save percentage.

He was great again Thursday before suffering the loss on a goal that went by him off the skate of defenseman Adam McQuaid.

"He's been great," said teammate Brad Marchand. "We need him to play like that if we're going to be a good team. "When he does, he gives us an opportunity to win every night. It's great to see him at the top of his game. We need him to continue to do that."

Said coach Claude Julien: "He had a bit of an off year last year, but he's been good. He's won the Vezina, he's a guy that's had some good save percentages. He's a guy that certainly deserves the accolades he's getting right now.

"He's been solid since the start of the season, and he's given us a chance to win every night."

The Bruins scored just four goals on their three-game trip that ended in Minnesota -- but they went 2-1 thanks largely to Rask. Boston comes into this game 10-7-0 on the season.

The Bruins played without young scoring star David Pastrnak (undisclosed injury) Thursday, and there was no word on whether he'll be back for Saturday's game. But the local fans will see another high-scoring young player as Winnipeg's Patrick Laine makes his TD Garden debut.

While he scored just one goal in the last five games, Laine has 12 for his rookie season and already had two hat tricks.

The Jets enter this game 9-8-2 on the season.

Preview: Panthers (8-8) at Senators (10-6)

Date: November 19, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

OTTAWA -- Two teams that should be in foul moods will take their frustrations out on each other Saturday night at Canadian Tire Centre.

The Ottawa Senators (10-6-1) suffered their worst defeat of the season when they fell 5-1 to the Nashville Predators on home ice Thursday. Four hours away on the same night, the Florida Panthers (8-8-1) were also taking their worst beating when they lost 6-1 to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"We didn't compete hard enough and Toronto put it to us pretty good," said coach Gerard Gallant after the third stop in a four-game road trip for the Panthers. "There was nothing good about our game tonight. A lot of guys didn't play good hockey at all. ... There was no compete, not battle level."

The Panthers, who got their only goal from defenseman Aaron Ekblad, used backup goalie James Reimer against his former team. Expected to get the call in Ottawa will be Roberto Luongo, who has a 14-14-1 career record versus the Senators.

Down the ice from him in the Senators net will be Craig Anderson, who returned to the team Friday after taking a one-day leave to be with his wife Nicholle as she battles cancer.

Anderson is off to an 8-3-1 start with a goals-against average (2.12) and save percentage (.934) that ranks among the league leaders.

"Andy's been an incredible inspiration to all of us the way he's been able to deal with what Nicholle is going through," said assistant captain Dion Phaneuf. "There's no words to describe what he's done for our team. Being so unselfish and coming back to our team at such a tough time, and playing the way that he has, is incredible. It just speaks to the character of him and he's got all the support in the world from us."

Anderson spent three seasons with the Panthers (2006-09) and owns a 13-6-2 record against his old team.

While the Panthers are without injured key players Nick Bjugstad, Jonathan Huberdeau and Alex Petrovic, the Senators aren't sure who they'll have available Saturday night.

Winger Bobby Ryan was hit in the hand with a shot during the Nashville game and it appears he could miss some time. Winger Mike Hoffman didn't play Thursday because of a lower body injury and is day-to-day, while winger Chris Neil missed Friday's practice with an unspecified issue and his status is also up in the air.

"It's tough," said coach Guy Boucher. "You look at your lineup and you plug some holes, but in reality you can't ask some guys to be a top six forward when you're a fourth liner. We've got to figure out a way to use the players on the roster so that we put guys at least in the chairs that they can manage so we have the best look possible."

The two teams split the season series last year, 2-2-1.

Preview: Celtics (6-6) at Pistons (6-7)

Date: November 19, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Al Horford and Jae Crowder are close to returning for the Boston Celtics. Whether those two starters get back in action on Saturday remains a major question mark.

Both remained sidelined on Friday, when the Celtics were defeated at home by Golden State, 104-88. Horford missed his ninth consecutive game with a concussion, while Crowder sat out for the eighth straight contest with a sprained left ankle.

The Celtics complete a back-to-back at the Detroit Pistons' home venue, The Palace of Auburn Hills

Coach Brad Stevens said Horford and Crowder, who comprise two-thirds of Boston's frontcourt, will accompany the team on its three-game road trip. They'll also make stops in Minnesota (Monday) and Brooklyn (Wednesday).

"Al had by far his best day (Thursday)," Stevens said. "He did some three-on-three, some one-on-one, went up and down, and felt pretty good. Hopefully, barring no setbacks, we're closer than further with him."

Boston has another injury concern as guard Marcus Smart left Friday's game with a left ankle bruise. The Celtics (6-6) shot 37.3 percent from the field in the loss.

"We've got 70 games left," Stevens said in his postgame press conference. "We haven't played a game yet without (at least) two of our top eight rotation guys (out)."

Golden State outscored Boston 31-9 in the third quarter.

"They're really good, and we all know that, but you just can't have droughts against them," Stevens said.

Point guard Isaiah Thomas expressed irritation that he only played 28 minutes, scoring a team-high 18 points.

"We went into panic mode," he told the Boston Globe. "We gave up."

The Pistons (6-7) are the only unbeaten team at home this season at 5-0. They've won by double digits each time while holding every opponent under 90 points.

They've been a completely different club on the road with a 1-7 mark. They were blown out 104-81 by the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night.

Detroit was held to 31.2 percent shooting by the Cavaliers and none of its starters reached double figures.

"We got crushed," coach Stan Van Gundy said with disgust. "They played harder than us, they played better than us, they moved the ball better, they played better together, they defended better, they did everything better."

Van Gundy indicated he would consider changing the starting lineup. The Pistons were down 30-19 after the first quarter.

"We didn't get enough good looks and they challenged everything around the rim," he said. "I give them all the credit. They played a lot harder than we did. We were just awful."

One silver lining for the Pistons -- they play their next four games at home after being on the road six of the last seven games. Their only home game during the past two weeks was a 104-88 victory over Oklahoma City on Monday.

Boston and Detroit were evenly matched last season, splitting their four-game season series. Every game was decided by seven points or less. Thomas averaged 23.5 points and 8.3 assists in those games.

Preview: Jazz (7-6) at Rockets (7-5)

Date: November 19, 2016 5:00 PM EDT

HOUSTON -- In the never-ending search for early-season trends that might serve as an indicator of long-term behavior, the Houston Rockets followed their fifth loss of the season on Wednesday night with a victory over the Portland Trail Blazers one evening later to avoid suffering their first losing skid on the season.

The Rockets (7-5), with a new coach and reconfigured roster, remain in search of consistency. Yet, their ability to rebound from setbacks offers optimism, particularly this week given the disappointment that resonated after their come-from-ahead loss against Oklahoma City. Houston led by as many as 11 points before falling 105-103.

"We're still fairly new as a team," said Rockets guard James Harden, who followed a season-worst 13-point performance against the Thunder with his third triple-double of the season against Portland. "We're still trying to figure each other out. As long as we can bounce back and continue to get better, continue to grow and learn from our mistakes, we'll be all right."

Through victory and defeat the Rockets, who host the Utah Jazz (7-6) on Saturday at Toyota Center, are working to establish their identity. They fancy themselves as a space-and-pace outfit yet they rank a modest 14th in the NBA in pace at 97.2 possessions per 48 minutes. They are fifth in offensive rating and are coming off back-to-back games where seven and six players reached double figures in scoring.

With the return of guard Patrick Beverley, Houston aims to improve defensively. What they've shown through a dozen games is a willingness to work at everything.

"We're going to make some mistakes and we still have some improving to do," Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said. "As long as they come with that attitude every day and work at it and fix their mistakes, then good things will happen."

Injuries continue to undermine the Jazz, who followed a successful five-game swing through the Eastern Conference with consecutive home losses. Utah went 4-1 before returning home and dropping games against the Memphis Grizzlies and Chicago Bulls, with the absences of guard George Hill (thumb) and forward Derrick Favors (knee) looming large.

"We've had a lot of guys adjusting to injury," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "There's a lot of that going on.

"I don't want to overreact to one player playing poorly or our team playing poorly. That doesn't get you where you want to go."

Without Hill, who has missed six games, the Jazz can appear rudderless. Utah was emboldened by the return of forward Gordon Hayward to open their road trip but Hill provides a veteran touch orchestrating the offense that isn't easily replaced.

Second-year guard Dante Exum has started the last four games in place of Hill and over the previous six games is averaging nine points and two assists while shooting just 40.8 percent. Prior to his injury, Hill was averaging 20.4 points and five assists.

Incidentally, Utah ranks dead last in the NBA in pace at 90.6 possessions per 48. Hill is questionable for a return against the Rockets, but with or without him Utah must find the rhythm it established on the road only to lose it back in Salt Lake City.

"We're going to go on this two-game road trip and hopefully get the best of that," Exum said.

Preview: Predators (7-6) at Blues (9-6)

Date: November 19, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

A couple of the hottest scorers in the NHL will lead their teams into Saturday night's matchup in St. Louis between the Nashville Predators and the St. Louis Blues.

For the Predators, right winger James Neal will be looking to extend a streak that has seen him score a goal in six consecutive games, a total of seven goals. The streak equaled the longest goal-scoring streak in franchise history and is the longest in the league this season.

For the Blues, left winger Jaden Schwartz has scored five goals in his last six games.

Neal had one goal in the Predators' 5-1 win at Ottawa on Thursday night while Schwartz scored twice in the Blues' 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

Neal leads Nashville with eight goals in 16 games while Schwartz is tied for the Blues' lead with right winger Vladimir Tarasenko with six goals in 14 games.

"You feel confident with your game when that happens," Neal said about his streak, the longest of his career. "You get a little streak going and you just want to keep shooting the puck because you feel like they're going to go in for you."

Added center Mike Fisher, "He's doing a great job of getting in scoring areas. His linemates are getting him the puck and he's played really good for us. ... He's in the zone right now. That's huge for us."

Predators' coach Peter Laviolette has been impressed with Neal's performance.

"He's played well all year," Laviolette said. "The beginning of the year when he didn't have the goals, he was like one of the top five guys on shots on net. We kind of got hit with that sickness and bug and it knocked the guys back for a couple of games. Even if they were in the lineup, they were pretty sick for two or three days.

"He was part of that and I think he got set back a little bit by that. After two or three games, getting his feet back under him, he's jumped right back into it. He's putting the puck at the net all the time. He's working for opportunities."

Schwartz also got off to a slow start this season, one of several Blues mired in a scoring slump. He had just one goal in his first eight games after missing the season's first four games because of a knee injury.

"It's guys in front doing a good job, taking the goalie's eyes away; that gives you the opportunity to pick a corner," Schwartz said. "That's big obviously. When pucks are going in as a team, it's a little bit of weight off your shoulders. Not relaxed, but you get a better feel shooting the puck."

Coach Ken Hitchcock said Schwartz is doing exactly what he should be doing.

"He's shooting the puck, he's going to the net, he's around it, he's attacking the net, he's playing in north straight lines," Hitchcock said. "Every time he does it, he has success. Every time he goes east-west, he doesn't. He's getting more and more determined to score."

Preview: Mavericks (2-9) at Magic (5-7)

Date: November 19, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

A week ago, the Orlando Magic were in dire straits.

The team was struggling at 3-5, dropping two after winning three games in a row. Their supposed defensive identity was falling apart as they ranked 29th in the league in defensive rating, giving up 109.0 points per 100 possessions. With one of the worst offenses in the league too and the worst field-goal shooting to boot, the Magic were sinking fast.

Magic coach Frank Vogel took the drastic change of sending prized youngster Aaron Gordon to the bench in favor of veteran Jeff Green, hoping to add some stability. The results were not immediate, and that change may not be the root cause, but something happened for the Magic in the week since.

In four games, the Magic defense has suddenly come alive. Orlando has given up 96.1 points per 100 possessions in the past week, the sixth best in the league in that time. They have risen from 29th in defensive efficiency to a much more respectable 15th overall.

Defense has taken hold.

"We are creating habits," Evan Fournier said after practice Friday. "It's not second nature yet. But we are definitely creating habits. It is encouraging. But on both ways. We have good players offensively as well. We have times where we really move the ball and find the open shooter. At times we do it, but we have to be more consistent. It is obvious we are getting better."

The Magic's offense remains much more of a work in progress than the defense at this point. But they have held three of their last four opponents to less than 90 points and have held opponents to worse than 40 percent shooting in the past two games. That helps the offense do just enough to win games -- two of the past three.

Orlando has slowly begun to formulate a defensive identity that has propelled the team to five wins despite its anemic offense.

The Dallas Mavericks are in much the same boat, without the same kind of success.

Dallas has just two following an 80-64 home loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Mavericks have seen injuries hit the team's roster hard. Deron Williams, Devin Harris and Dirk Nowitzki have all missed time so far this season.

Both Nowitzki and Williams will miss Saturday's game in Orlando, in addition to sitting out Friday's home game against the Grizzlies, coach Rick Carlisle said Friday.

"(Nowitzki is) making progress, but we're going to be cautious and we're going to be smart about it," Carlisle told Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas. "He's played hurt a lot in his career. This situation is different, though. We're early in the year. There's something that has hung around that needs to be addressed and be expunged, so we're working on it."

Harrison Barnes and Wesley Matthews have had to carry the offensive load. And have struggled to do so. The Mavericks shot 28.8 percent from the floor in Friday's loss, the lowest single-game field-goal percentage in the NBA this season.

But like the Magic, the Mavericks have thrived on defense while struggling on offense. Dallas has the second worst field goal percentage in the league at 41.8 percent entering the game (the Magic are last at 40.8 percent).

That defense has not translated to wins yet though.

Both teams have had to settle into the season, integrate new pieces and discover their identity. Injuries have hurt the Mavericks' offense while their defense has played well enough to keep them in most games. The Magic appear to be rounding into form.

Preview: Suns (4-9) at 76ers (2-10)

Date: November 19, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Philadelphia 76ers, who in recent years have redefined futility, will be looking to extend a rare (if modest) winning streak when they host the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night.

The Sixers equaled the NBA record for consecutive losses in a single season by dropping 26 games in a row in 2013-14, and set a league mark by dropping 28 straight spanning the '14-15 and '15-16 seasons.

They finished 10-72 last year, falling one loss shy of equaling the worst full-season record in NBA history, established by Philadelphia's 1972-73 team.

Their 109-102 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday was, however, their second straight at home. They followed that up with a 110-86 defeat Thursday night at Minnesota, extending their road losing streak to 21 games, dating back to last season. The franchise record is 23, from March 29 to Dec. 23, 2015.

Wednesday's game was billed as a matchup of two of the game's best young centers, the Timberwolves' Karl-Anthony Towns and the Sixers' Joel Embiid. Towns, however, finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Embiid collected 10 points and 10 boards.

Minnesota's Anthony Wiggins led his team with 35 points and 10 rebounds, while Dario Saric topped the Sixers with 16 points.

"This (Timberwolves) group that you are looking at played with each other all last year -- many, many, many games together," Philadelphia coach Brett Brown told the Philadelphia Inquirer after the game.

Minnesota shot 50.6 percent, limited the Sixers to 37.3-percent accuracy and owned a 49-40 rebounding advantage.

"It's just part of the evolution, where we are at," Brown told the Inquirer. "They are two years ahead of us. It's on me and my staff to keep our guys up and help them."

Embiid, who sat out his first two seasons as a result of a pair of foot surgeries, is being limited to 24 minutes a night as a precaution. The team's leading scorer (17.0) and rebounder (7.6), he has also been held out of four games to date. The Sixers have not yet said whether he will be available Saturday.

Seven players cracked double figures, five of them reserves, as the Suns (4-9) snapped a three-game losing streak by winning 116-96 at Indiana on Friday night, Phoenix's third game in a six-game road trip. One of those subs, Brandon Knight, led the way with 17 points, while Jared Dudley and Alan Williams provided 16 and 15 off the bench, respectively.

The Suns enjoyed a 78-35 advantage in bench scoring.

The Sixers will be without forward Ben Simmons, the No. 1 pick in the most recent draft, until at least January. He is recovering from foot surgery. Guard Jerry Bayless (wrist) has also yet to play, but he has ramped up his workouts and has said he hopes to return by the end of the month.

Center/forward Nerlens Noel, who had been rehabbing from surgery on his left knee in Alabama, returned to Philadelphia on Friday, according to the Inquirer. He has also yet to play this season.
