Saddam Fails to Make TV Appearance

Iraqi TV said dictator Saddam Hussein would broadcast an address to his oppressed tonight, but he failed to show up.

An underling instead read a statement that Saddam supposedly wrote.

...one of Saddam's mustachioed personal bodyguards - never before seen without Saddam - showed up last week as bodyguard to Iraq's defense minister.

Well, if he's dead: Mission Accomplished.
We can withdraw now and attribute this mess to "premature militarization."

He probably took his kids to the beach with Osama and his family... The USA seems to be incapable of getting the truly bad guys... pretty embarrassing for all the billions of dollars they spend spying on the world... But hey, those dreaded sportsbettors and bookies, that's another story!

I mean after all, How long did it take them to get Noreiga nd he was driving around Panama in an RV?

U.S. officials are again asking where Saddam Hussein is. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says it's "interesting" that Saddam "didn't show up" to read a statement on Iraqi TV today.

Rumsfeld pointed out that Saddam hasn't been seen, at least, not live, since a U.S. missile strike on a meeting of Iraq's command and control, the night before the ground war began.

Seeing that we're in Iraq to "get Saddam", they better f#$%ing find out where he is...
Its incredible to me that the reason we're there is "missing in action" and army "intelligence" is supposedly clueless about this.

He could be dead, or he could just be avoiding things like public appearances when there is an invading army waiting to lob a missile at his whereabouts as soon as they are known.

CNN

WOLF BLITZER: The mere presence of Saddam would presumably have stiffened the backbone of a lot of his fighters, would have shown the Iraqi people that he's still in power and that the U.S.-led coalition has not brought him down. Couldn't the fact that he didn't appear on television be an indication that he's struggling to survive, perhaps in hiding, perhaps having been injured in that initial airstrike?

Nic Robertson(JORDAN-IRAQ BORDER): Definitely, it is interesting, and there will be a specific reason why Saddam didn't give the speech himself. After all, he is essentially asking Iraqis to lay down their lives in the spirit of jihad -- to become martyrs and essentially offer themselves up for the cause. So there must be a reason.

I'm leaning towards Saddam being dead or seriously injured. Saddam appearing on TV in real time would make sense. It would bolster the Iraqi troops and put fear in those who want to be rid of him.

But a year ago the same things were being said about Osama, and it is now widely held that he is alive.

Saddam Hussein was a "no-show" Tuesday and stocks rallied modestly in reaction.

Shares actually rose briefly following a weaker-than-expected report on manufacturing at 10 a.m. EST, indicating an enduring undercurrent of bullishness among market participants. Such sentiments surfaced more dramatically after Iraqi television broadcast an official reading a statement attributed to Hussein, rather than read by the dictator directly.

You do know that Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein hate each other and there religious beliefs are totally different. Shameless Schill please read some books before making a statement in which you refer a dictator and a terrorist together. Both of them oppose each other.

Crazy Ivan,
Did it ever occur to you that I may be joking? Do you think I was serious?
This place has some amazing intellects!

it`s very possible that they are holding him back until things get particularly dicey......and then bring him forth ala "el cid".....strap him to a horse and send his dead, rotting carcass out to scare and demoralize the coalition.........the iraqi`s do have a huge advantage....their information minister actually talks to god....he was saying,"kill all americans everywhere"...."god asks you to do this"......that`s one helluva direct hook-up he`s got going there...the more you hear this kind of medieval b.s.,the more you realize how severely these monsters pervert their own beloved religion......i wonder if the people actually believe saddam receives orders from god....the people in n. korea absolutely believe kim jung il is a deity.....
