Hi everyone. I wanted to start a thread to help contribute and track my NCAAB picks. A little background on me : I've played basketball all of my life and watched more of it than you could imagine. Basketball was my first love and honestly what I feel like this 6'3" lanky frame was made for. It was always my dream as a child, to play basketball for Bobby Knight and the Hoo Hoo Hoosiers! Well that never happened, so now I get my thrills from betting on them and trying to outsmart these nerdy statisticians.
I'm in my early thirties now, but I've been gambing since I was 19. I remember I was 19 in the Navy, I was out at sea aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis. I worked in Avionics, and in our free time the guys in my shop would all play madden and NCAA March Madness for bragging rights. We all thought we knew the most about sports, that's when one of the older guys introduced us all to sportsbook.com and told us to put our money where our mouth was. We were lucky enough to have internet access aboard the carrier at night, usually for a few hours. That's when I became hooked. I think I turned about 200$ into 2400. A few lucky ass college football and college basketball parlays, I thought I was good! Then came the 2004 NCAA championship game between UCONN and Duke. I just knew that UCONN was winning this game. I put all 2400$ on UCONN -2. A lot of money when you are 19 and on E-2 pay in the military. We were able to watch the broadcast that night, and I remember how nerve-racking it was and all of my shipmates were rooting for me. If you guys remember this game: UCONN was up by 4 points with a couple of seconds to go, they had just sealed it with free throw I believe. Okafor missed the first, then hit the second to put them up by 4. Duke inbounds the ball to Chris Duhon, he runs down, crosses half court and heaves up a shot. The "meaningless" shot goes in, UCONN still wins by 79-78, but now they don't cover. I just remember thinking..."No F-ing way that just happened." I learned very early that anything can happen when gambling on sports, it's all about money management, and enjoying the ride! Here is a good article about that night and I remember people in Vegas referring to it as "The shot heard around the world." Haha http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/sportsbusiness/news/story?id=17755
Just wanted to introduce myself, and hopefully I can contribute to the forum. I follow the Big Ten very closely, so a lot of my bets will be Big Ten basketball. I believe in quality more than quanity, when it comes to big bets. I'm hoping to hit above 60% this year, and excited for the betting card tomorrow.
I'll probably be making a 1 unit play on BYU -4.5 tonight, but I'm not going to make it an official pick I don't think Long Beach State has the offense to keep up with BYU. Long beach state lost al lof their starters from last year. They did get some upperclass transfers, one from Maryland and one from USC. I like BYU in this one and their scoring talent returning to the team. Play at your own risk!
