WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A comment Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld made during a Christmas Eve address to U.S. troops in Baghdad has sparked new conspiracy theories about the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

In the speech, Rumsfeld made a passing reference to United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to stop al Qaeda hijackers.

But in his remarks, Rumsfeld referred to the "the people who attacked the United States in New York, shot down the plane over Pennsylvania."

A Pentagon spokesman insisted that Rumsfeld simply misspoke, but Internet conspiracy theorists seized on the reference to the plane having been shot down.

"Was it a slip of the tongue? Was it an error? Or was it the truth, finally being dropped on the public more than three years after the tragedy" asked a posting on the Web site WorldNetDaily.com.

Some people remain skeptical of U.S. government statements that, despite a presidential authorization, no planes were shot down September 11, and rumors still circulate that a U.S. military plane shot the airliner down over Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

A Pentagon spokesman insists Rumsfeld has not changed his opinion that the plane crashed as the result of an onboard struggle between passengers and terrorists.

The independent panel charged with investigating the terrorist attacks concluded that the hijackers intentionally crashed Flight 93, apparently because they feared the passengers would overwhelm them.

Just like the President misspoke when he said he saw the "first tower hit on TV" at the Florida elementary school.

And like the owner of the WTC-7 building when he said, "We decided to go ahead and pull it down."

It's easy to misspeak when tangled in a web of lies

Which is really the big question ... why deny it? It would be the right thing to do, under the circumstances.

I don't buy the conspiracy theory that has the US gov't pulling 9/11 off, but there are plenty of unanswered questions and general overall fishiness to major bits of it, like this one.

* This war was planned well in advance of 9-11 ... the Bushies got stiffed on the UNOCAL deal by the Taliban and in August of 2001 Bush told em he would "bomb Afgahistan back to the stone ages .."

* Amazing how a passport of one of the hijackers was found in the rubble of one of the Trade Centers? Wow, how does that happen?

* The F-16's out of Langley were told to "back off" while the Twin Towers were under attack ... hmm, Payne Stewarts plane goes off course and the jets were scrambled immediately

* Do you honestly believe a bunch of Arabs with virtually little flying experience could have taken commercial jet liners into the Twin Towers? If you answer Yes, Elvis was just spotted in Florida

This was the "suppossed" biggest communication failure in the history of this country ... ya sure would not know it from the lack of priority given by the Sopranos in the White House to find out what really went on

One has to conveniently forget a lot of history to come to this conclusion. There were the GIs forced to walk across ground zero after nuclear explosions, the downwinders in Utah, the unsuspecting people injected with plutonium, the syphilis experiments at Tuskegee, the assassinations of dozens of members of the Black Panthers and American Indian Movement, Waco and Ruby Ridge, the American soldiers exposed to Agent Orange and depleted uranium and the germ experiments conducted over US cities and states. Then, there was the Joint Chiefs of Staff plan called Operation Northwoods to provoke a war with Cuba by sinking a ship with US military personnel at Guantanamo Bay or conducting terrorism in US cities, involving civilian casualties, and blaming it on Cuba. Incidentally, this was reported by David Ruppe on November 7, 2001 on ABC news.com- hardly a website of the black helicopter crowd. In addition, there are the millions of citizens of capitalist nations, including the United States, who have been used as cannon fodder in wars for control of natural resources and cheap labor or to eliminate alternative economic systems. I have not mentioned the even more significant crimes committed against foreign populations.

Another criticism of conspiracies involving the US government is the idea that a lot of people would know, causing great difficulty in covering up the conspiracy. I think the JFK assassination disproves this theory. The lone gunman with the magic bullet is so implausible that a conspiracy is very likely. The Zapruder film shows that the gunshot which destroyed the front of Kennedy's skull came from the front and not the back. How did they cover it up for nearly forty years? Witnesses suffer mysterious deaths, other people who know the truth get old and die and the corporate media is certainly going to be unreceptive to anyone who comes forward with evidence to contradict the official story. The Church Committee discovered that many editors and journalists at major American newspapers were in fact CIA employees. It is a matter of public record, although rarely discussed.

Finally, the Sunday Herald of Glasgow, Scotland has discovered two US government documents, which prove there were plans for US global domination and control of oil well before 9-11 happened. One document was prepared for Vice-president Dick Cheney and others in the Bush administration by the conservative think tank, Project for the New American Century. It states the need for the United States to dominate the Persian Gulf region, to control space and cyberspace and to eliminate any competition from Europe in this global domination. Another document called Strategic Energy Policy Challenges For The 21st Century openly admits that the reason for war with Iraq is to secure US access to, and control of, Middle Eastern oil fields.

The American people have been brainwashed by the corporate media, but are they gullible enough to accept this Bush plan for global domination, involving a whole series of foreign wars against recalcitrant countries at enormous expense, without a tremendous fear-inspiring event like took place on 9-11? I think not. As a person with two degrees in science, I must say that this does not scientifically prove a conspiracy took place. However, all this evidence certainly increases the probability of one. Three things are certain. First, the fear and patriotism induced by the horrifying events of 9-11 had numerous and obvious advantages for the policies of President George W. Bush. As Nazi leader Hermann Goering said: "Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger." Second, the war against Iraq is about control of oil and not weapons of mass destruction. Third, this is not really a "war on terrorism," but rather a war for empire.

Doc u are pretty smart.now heres more to the story

Here is an update on that flight. The flight was delayed 45 minutes from taking off. So if it was an inside job now the whole time line is inmisstepp. I believe the 45 min delay was significant because if the plane was remote controlled and keep in mind if it would of been on time that plane was headed for washington dc with 2 targets in mind either the capitol or white house. Well due to the 45 min delay the plane couldnt rationally been justified to continue and hit its point of impact. So and this is fact that there was a white fighter jet seen in the same area as the plane crashing. The fact of the matter is if the plane continued and hit the intended target after a 45 min delay ...and after the pentagon is hit there would be no justification for not picking it up so i believe the plane was shot down.The whole 911 story is blown out of the water with Rumsfeld statement..God help America and keep the :finger: fight Doc

I personally thought the Warren Commission was a "convenient" wrap-up for the assassination of JFK....

Too many things about the whole event that stuck out:

Numerous violations by security during the motorcade
The Zapruder film showing Kennedy's head moving back and left
Testimony from witnesses whose cameras were taken by FBI and the pictures never became public, witnesses never got thier cameras back
The handling of the autopsy by inexperienced people
The removal of Kennedy's brain....to cover up ballistic evidence?

I personally think that LBJ had a major part in it, to keep from getting his a$$ tossed in jail and his name drug through the mud......there were any of about a half-dozen groups that had motive, but I think it was between LBJ and his own government connections.....

Just my 2 cents....this would be one of those events in life that I would like to know the truth about before I die.....
