Ron Paul: 'Pretty sad' that Limbaugh is GOP leader

Demonstrating again his propensity to go out on a limb, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) had some choice words of criticism for Rush Limbaugh, the conservative media talk show host who was the star attraction at last weekend’s Conservative Political Action Conference.

In a phone interview Monday morning with CNN’s John Roberts, Paul said of Limbaugh “He is a leader. He does say the right things now and I think a lot of people like to hear what he’s saying but I think it’s also a little bit polarizing and confrontational and I think that’s why the Democrats are bragging that Limbaugh now speaks for the Republicans so I guess the Democrats think its to their advantage if he’s leading the charge.”

Responding to a question from Roberts on what it means for the Republican Party that their “spokesperson” is a radio talk show host and not a member of the political leadership, Paul said, “I think it’s pretty sad. It’s a good point to make. That means the Republicans are really starving for some type of leadership.”

A 2008 presidential contender, Paul was a dark horse candidate for the Republican nomination. His advocacy against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as his criticisms of infringements on civil liberties under the Bush administration have often put him at odds with the majority of his party but have also led to strong support from civil libertarians.

“He really doesn’t broaden the base,” said Paul of Limbaugh. “It’s still very narrow and that’s why some of us would like to see an approach that would emphasize personal liberties, civil liberties, looking at the drug war… It’s really the old Republican Party because even Limbaugh was a big supporter of Bush so he doesn’t have anything new either when it comes to bringing our troops homes, not expanding the war in Afghanistan..

In criticizing Limbaugh, Paul joins Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, who also had some unflattering remarks to say about the popular talk show host.

“Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer,” Steele said to CNN's D.L. Hughley on Saturday. “Rush Limbaugh, his whole thing is entertainment. Yes it’s incendiary, yes it’s ugly.”

Said Roberts of Paul, “I was fascinated that in terms of expanding the base, Ron Paul is bringing a lot of young people in the door. It’s fascinating. This 72-year-old white guy from Texas is bringing a lot of young people in.”

Paul demurred though to Roberts’ enquiries of whether he would run for president in 2012.

“I don’t think so. It’s a long way off. I can hardly imagine what [state] the country is is going to be in. Right now I just plan on promoting the cause.”

I brought this up as a convesation last month. "Most" of the the righty's denied it. Then they come on here and alternate between Hannity's and Fatman's one liners during debates.

Noticed that in a conversation with my conservative cousin last week as well. What's with all the "mortgaging my children's future" speak?

I'm starting to think righty's all take their marching orders from Hannity and Limbaugh. Please tell me it ain't so. LOL

limbaugh is an entertainer, side show act. anyone taking him seriously is a fool.

he is a great entertainer. that's why hannity and o'reilly do so well. not because they are to be taken seriously, but because they entertain. i consider myself left and i enjoy watching o'reilly. hannity is ok once in awhile, o'reilly is great though.

i dont watch it because i look up to him like many do for limbaugh, which is sad, i watch him because he is entertaining.

if your top guy is a radio personality who's sole job is to purposely pose as a right wing loon, then wrap it up, its over.

Since the inauguration, I've locked in conservative channel KSFO 560 AM to #6 in my car.

Morning drive - Brian Susman
Office Time - Rush
After Lunch - Hannity
Drive home - Mark Levin

Talk about entertaining/comedy radio!!! I love how the callers greet Hannity with every call,
Hannity - "Hello Sean, your a great American."
Caller - "Your a great American as well, proceed..."

LMAO!

I don't know Susman and the rest of them are idiots, but Hannity is easily the worst.

wtf are you talking about?

of course here we go again with a sheeple talking anecdotally with absolutely no evidence to back up their claims

go back to whatever thread you think you created and see what was actually said. I remember, just recently, discussing these talk show guys in a thread about Glenn Beck. My response was that folks like Coulter, Rush, and Hannity are complete blowhards, but that Beck is at least entertaining and understands what is written in the constitution.

if that, to you, means that I am taking my marching orders from friggin Hannity (who I absolutely despise) and Rush (who i find fairly intelligent but overall a jackass), well, so be it.

exhausting to repeat myfuckingself on here over and over because gtc and 3peet cannot read without their blue glasses changing the written words

i like o'reilly because he mixes in entertainment with politics. and its hilarious watching him cut off people 5 seconds into them speaking. he gets flustered when he's challenged and ends up looking stupid a lot.

hes a great entertainer though like i said.

i dont know why liberals go after these righties on the radio and news.

pure fact of the matter is they are successful because they can entertain there viewers. not because they have a predominant viewpoint shared with people, but because they are great entertainers.

anyone putting stock into these peoples opinions like daveinvegas who's admitted he wanted rush to run for president, are clowns and should be treated as clowns. you watch them for entertainment value, entertainment value only.

Dave think about it. The party these guys represent got their asses handed to them in the election. Save for O'Reilly, you can tell Hannity and Limbaugh truely despise Obama and everything he stands for. Why wouldn't I wanna listen to this guys bitch and whine during my morning and afternoon drives? And as for the callers? Oh lord, they're THE BEST! "Hannity I'm afraid for my family now that Obama's president", "Rush, your a great American but I'm seriously fearing for my safety" You know I ain't makin this shit up people.
We're what, 5 months removed from the primaries and Sean Hannity's #2 subject is still Bill freaking Ayers? If I'm lucky Hannity will sprinkle in a lil Jerimiah Wright just to pick up the call volume on a slow day. :):)

And as for OReilly, like GTC said, its just fun to watch him blow a gasket every now and then. However, I think off camera the guy is probably the sanest of em all and would be cool to have a few brews with.

Hey circus animal, why do you think I mentioned "most" instead of "all"? If you had an 1/8th of a brain you say you do then you realize I wasn't talkin about you.
