But claims by US spokesmen that their forces were in the centre of the city could not be confirmed by BBC correspondents.

The BBC's Rageh Omaar says he saw no American troops, but saw the evidence of recent fighting littering the main roads, with Iraqi tanks and armoured personnel carriers still on fire.

A spokesman at US Central Command described the operation as the beginning of "rolling patrols".

We have substantial forces now moving into the city

US spokesman Frank Thorp

Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf denied the reports, saying Iraqi forces had expelled US troops from the city's international airport and inflicted heavy losses on the Americans.

US Central Command spokesman Frank Thorp said there had been reports of "limited engagements" with the elite Iraq Special Republican Guard.

US military officials are quoted as saying a number of their soldiers have been injured in fighting there.

Opposing forces
The BBC's Andrew Gilligan in Baghdad says the US has a history of premature claims in this conflict and that it is clearly in the American interest to create psychological momentum in the hope that the defenders will give up.

Truckloads of Iraqi troops, some towing howitzers, and heavy Iraqi artillery can be seen moving on the streets of Baghdad for the first time, he says.

I dont doubt that the big one is about to happen soon tho.

update:

US tanks and armoured vehicles have entered southern Baghdad and fought skirmishes with Iraq's elite Special Republican Guard, US officials say.
They launched the raid in the early hours of Saturday and at one point claimed to have reached the centre of the capital.

American television station Fox News showed footage of armoured vehicles firing on trucks and cars on the road to the airport in the west of the city.

A spokesman at US Central Command described the operation as the beginning of "rolling patrols".

But claims by US spokesmen that their forces reached the centre of the city were dismissed by BBC correspondents.

-------------------------------------------

The airport is a deathtrap.
Until the western side of Bagdhad is cleared they can lob artillery and ordnance onto that zone.

Baghdad:

American forces have moved into parts of urban Baghdad in what US military officials describe as a series of "rolling patrols". BBC correspondents in the centre of the city say they have not seen any US military vehicles, but reliable witnesses have seen evidence of a battle on the southern outskirts. The Iraqi information minister has said that the city is still under Iraqi control

There are reports of fighting on the main road leading from Baghdad airport to the city. Marines moving in from the south-east have also opened fire on the eastern suburbs, according to reports

The electricity supply returned to parts of the capital on Friday evening after power cuts blacked out large areas of the city on Thursday

Three coalition soldiers and two other people have been killed in an apparent suicide car bombing at a checkpoint north-west of Baghdad

Let's get real - we are kicking their ass - we slowed a bit for 4 days - we will have Saddam out soon - who knows about how long we have to stay to keep the country under control - that could be years.
