BEVO, Texas' longhorn steer mascot, died Friday morning.
According to the school, BEVO, the 14th longhorn mascot in the school's history, died in his sleep. He was diagnosed with leukemia and had been unable to travel to Texas' game against Oklahoma last week. The school had recently said he was going to retire because of the diagnosis.
"BEVO XIV was so much more than a traditional mascot—he was so big and strong, but he had such a sweet personality and a gentle soul," Silver Spurs executive director Ricky Brennes, said in a statement "He loved the attention that came with being BEVO but was very cool, calm and smart. Like a dog he would come when called by name, show up to the house looking for treats and even roll over on his side so Mrs. Baker could rub his belly. He did so much for his university and community. His last few days provided great memories, but we miss him already."
The school said a search for the new BEVO would begin immediately. This BEVO had been Texas' longhorn mascot since 2004 when he was 2. The Silver Spurs alumni association funds the transportation and care costs of the live mascots
